Kids born to older dads more likely to be bipolar

CHICAGO (AP) — Children born to older fathers face a greater chance of developing bipolar disorder, according to one of the largest studies linking mental illness with advanced paternal age.

The leading theory is that older men's sperm may be more likely to develop mutations. Even so, the odds of a person becoming bipolar are so low that the study's authors said it shouldn't dissuade older men from becoming fathers.

The risks started increasing around age 40 but were strongest among those 55 and older. Children born to these dads were 37% more likely to develop bipolar disorder than those born to men in their 20s.

The study, released Monday, appears in September's Archives of General Psychiatry.

Bipolar disorder causes dramatic mood swings, from deep depression to manic highs. It affects more than 5 million Americans.

VERTIGO: No two Meniere's patients are alike, and neither is the length nor the severity of their attacks. Some may suffer bouts on a weekly or even monthly basis, other may have horrible bouts once a year, others may suffer a dibilitating bout once and then only have mild, rarely occuring bouts thereafter. The worst symptom of any attack is the dizziness. Some sufferers describe it as the 'room being at half-tilt' while other say it is similar to seasickness. There are medications that may help. An anti-diziness medication such as Antivert may help with the dizziness. Another drug prescribed is Scopolamine, which is worn transdermally. It is a belladonna derivitive, and some suffers find that the symptoms caused by the 'Scope patch' are worse than their Meniere's symptoms. Compazine may be given for extreme vomiting.

Snickerdoodles

Here are the Snickerdoodles I mentioned yesterday, this batch baked by Alice to Nigella's recipe from How to Be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking (I've given the title in full as "comfort cooking" is such an appealing concept!)

Cream 125g butter with 100g caster sugar, beat in an egg and 1 tsp. vanilla extract. Add to that 250g plain flour, 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg, 3/4 tsp. baking powder, pinch of salt. Form pieces of the resulting dough into walnut-sized balls and roll them in a mixture of cinnamon (1 tblsp.) and caster sugar (2 tblsps.) spooned onto a plate. Arrange on lined baking sheets and bake until golden - about 15 minutes at 180/Gas 4. Leave on the tray for a minute before moving them to a cooling rack.

These are buttery, spicily fragrant and very good.

How dangerous is air travel?

Spanair jet crashed in Madrid killing 154 passengers and crew. Days later a further 68 people were lost in Kyrgyzstan and this week 168 Ryanair passengers endured a terrifying emergency descent from 30,000ft when their jet suddenly lost cabin pressure. Such a spate of incidents inevitably leads the travelling public to ask: how safe is it to fly?

According to the statistics, travelling in a commercial airliner is becoming progressively safer. The accident rate in 1996 for western-built jet aircraft was 1.3 crashes per million flights, which nearly halved to 0.75 crashes per million flights last year. The fatality rate has been falling too, from 1,035 deaths in 2005 to 692 in 2007. In comparison, just under 3,000 people were killed on British roads last year.

The main warning is that some continents have better safety records than others

in Africa is just over 4 per million flights

north America's accident rate is at 0.09 flights per million

So when will she subject herself to questions?

"When we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it," Davis said, praising a Fox News Channel profile of Palin that ran last night.

Why is she scared of answering questions? Wallace asked.

"She's not scared to answer questions," Davis said, "but you know what? We run our campaign not the news media."

In fairness, an Alaska TV reporter did get to ask Palin a question Thursday, something along the lines of

"Governor, we feel like we're losing you - are you still going to be there for Alaska?"
