This is Bokito, a gorilla housed in the Rotterdam Zoo, who achieved international fame on May 18, 2007, for escaping his enclosure, attacking a woman, and then going on a smashing spree in a nearby restaurant. He was sedated with a tranquilizer gun and placed back in his enclosure, which is (has been?) to be upgraded to include one-way mirrors for visitor viewing, as opposed to the open windows that had him living in a fishbowl environment.

The woman he attacked had been visiting him on average four times a week, and claimed a special bond with him. She is seen in the video below.

It's no wonder that Bokito sought out this woman and savaged her, including a many-times-over fractured arm and over 100 bite marks.

Despite having been warned by zoo staff to stop antagonizing Bokito, she's now suing the zoo (or was, as of 2007).

CHENNAI, India — Recently it was found that the Panna National Park in central India, one of the most prestigious tiger reserves, was bereft of the big cat. Only four years ago the park had 35 tigers. By mid-2008, only one male tiger was seen there, and two female cats introduced into Panna from neighboring national parks to increase the feline population had vanished. In 2006, Sariska National Park in western India lost all its 26 tigers.

India's tiger tale is written in the blood spilled from these majestic creatures. In the early 1900s, India had 40,000 tigers roaming its wilds. Now there may not even be a thousand left. With one big cat killed every day by poachers — who sell the body parts for dubious medicinal remedies — it may not be long before tigers in India are seen only in zoos.

Elephants in zoos live anonymous lives. Day after day, the zoo-going public stops for a brief look, unaware of the secret suffering elephants endure. Thanks to In Defense of Animals' efforts, the housing of treatment of elephants in zoos is the subject of growing national debate, with literally thousands of news articles and television reports dedicated to this subject over the past few years.

To date, eighteen zoos have closed or plan to close their elephant exhibits, including major institutions like the Bronx Zoo and zoos in Detroit, San Francisco and Chicago. And, eleven zoos have placed a total of 14 elephants at the two U.S. elephant sanctuaries.

Tasmanian devils, whose numbers have dropped significantly since the appearance of a contagious cancer more than a decade ago, have been listed as endangered in Australia.

CANBERRA, Australia - The Tasmanian devil, a snarling fox-sized marsupial made notorious by its Looney Tunes cartoon namesake Taz, was listed in Australia as an endangered species Friday because of a contagious cancer that has wiped out most of the wild population.

The upgrade from "vulnerable" under Australian environmental law entitles the world's largest marsupial carnivore to greater protection in the island state of Tasmania, Environment Minister Peter Garrett said in a statement.

Devils do not exist in the wild outside Tasmania, although mainland zoos are breeding captive populations as a strategy against total extinction.

No joke. These birds were ranked in 2004 by the Guiness Book of World Records as one of the most deadly birds in planet, especially to zookeepers. They get to be upwards of six feet tall and can disembowel a human with a single kick, bringing their 5 inch talons to bear.

Don't believe me? Here's one in action.

To avoid cassowary attacks, steer clear of Australia, New Zealand, and zoos keeping them. If you do encounter a cassowary, don't provoke it (especially by telling them that their horn looks like a rotten toe nail--they hate that). If in the end you still find yourself being charged by a cassowary, make sure you carry around a large metal shield with you. And have 911 on speed dial.

Zoos in the U.S., Panama and Mexico are deploying researchers in Central America to develop new ways to fight a fungus blamed for wiping out dozens of frog and amphibian species as part of a project announced Monday.

The Smithsonian Institution is leading six other zoos and institutes in the Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project, which aims to raise $1.5 million to fight the fast-spreading chytrid fungus.

Scientists say the chytrid fungus threatens to wipe out a vast number of the approximately 6,000 known amphibian species and is spreading quickly. Already, 122 amphibian species are believed to have gone extinct in the last 30 years, primarily because of the fungus, conservationists say.

clipper's remarks: I have been to this Zoo. I hate zoos, most aquariums and aviaries, and the idea of this poor creature facing years of loneliness in a tiny tank performing "tricks for fish" makes my guts stir.
I believe this whale and it's late buddy, were captured in the Puget Sound area of Washington State, and hauled by truck to Tacoma. If you've ever been to Tacoma you know what a dump it is. I don't know why anyone would want to live there; filthy God forsaken place it is. That tank is not as big as an Olympic sized pool.

Elephants in Zoos at Risk of Abnormal Behaviour Because of Small Groups

Elephants in zoos are at risk of depression, according to a new study that found captive animals are unhappy kept alone or in small groups.

most elephants in zoos are kept in groups of four or smaller.

Scientists say this is unnatural for the herd animals.

"In the wild, elephant social structure is complex and, although the average group size is around 12, they can also live in even larger extended family units. Contact with members of their own species is crucial for the animals to develop normal behaviour patterns and friendships," he said.

"Small group sizes in zoos may prevent this from happening. There is no good reason for a zoo to keep just one elephant."

Weighing up to six tonnes, elephants are the largest land mammals. They are highly intelligent and can live up to 70 years, although their numbers are dropping due to poaching and the destruction of their habitat.
