New Discoveries at Mercury

July 3, 2008: Mercury's magnetic field is "alive." Volcanic vents ring the planet's giant Caloris Basin. And Mercury has shrunk in on itself more than previously suspected.

These are just a few of the new discoveries by NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft, which flew past Mercury on January 14, 2008. The results are described in a series of 11 papers published in a special July 4th issue of Science magazine.

Six of the papers in Science report studies of the planet's surface--its colors, mineralogy, and the shape of its terrain. For instance, the color enhanced image below reveals evidence of volcanic vents along the margins of Caloris basin, one of the Solar System's largest and youngest impact basins:

Next Entry Jupiter has a new Red Spot

Jupiter has a brand-spanking new baby red spot (the left-most red circle in the above photo). The red (and white) spots seen in Jupiter's atmosphere are storms. Or big UFOs. Or something. It depends on who you talk to.

The "Great Red Spot" (that's the big 'un in the pic) is about the width of the Earth and has been in existence for quite some time -- Giovanni Cassini described it in the late 17th century. A smaller red spot (tiny -- size of Mars) popped into existence sometime in 2006. The new guy is less than a year old -- maybe only a few days old.

Note: questions have been raised about the size of the Great Red Spot. It's pretty common in textbooks to say that the GRS is "three times" the size of the earth, but there's a few problems with that.

ah, Jupiter is just going through puberty. It'll start slamming doors and shouting at it's parents and masturbating furiously soon.

Poor Jupiter, it can't even get zits without everyone commenting on them.

Stressed-out Skin Loses Its Antimicrobial Defense Mechanism

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2007) — It is well known that being stressed increases our susceptibility to infections by impairing the function of our immune system, but the molecular links between stress and diminished immune function have not been determined.

However, Peter Elias and colleagues at UCSF, have now characterized a mechanistic link in mice between psychological stress and increased susceptibility to skin infections.

Mice subjected to conditions of psychological stress were found to be more susceptible to group A Streptococcus pyogenes skin infections than mice housed under normal conditions.
