More AIDS risked as poor women trade sex for food

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Rising food prices around the world are likely to drive poor women to trade sex for basic goods like fish and cooking oil, raising the risk of new AIDS infections, U.N officials said on Monday.

Delegates at a major AIDS conference in Mexico cited the cases of fisherwomen in the Pacific and women in Kenya desperate for food being forced to sell their bodies, adding to concerns of a new twist in the spread of the deadly pandemic.

"Food is such a basic need that you can see people really going to great lengths," said Fadzai Mukonoweshuro of the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization in southern Africa.

"Recent studies in Botswana, Swaziland, Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania have shown associations between acute food insecurity and unprotected transactional sex among poor women," he said.

In 1979 the Romanian government lent Zambia money to buy Romanian tractors. Zambia was unable to keep up the payments and in 1999 Romania and Zambia negotiated to liquidate the debt for $3m.

Before the deal could be finalised one of DAI's vulture funds stepped in and bought the debt from Romania for less than $4m. They are now suing the Zambian government for the original debt plus interest which they calculate at over $40m and they expect to win.

Malawi's alternative: bicycles for hire

NAMITETE, Malawi (Reuters Life!) - Bernard Banda makes $5 a day carrying people on his bicycle, good money in a country where more than half the 13 million people live below a dollar a day.

"I charge MK70 (50 U.S. cents) per trip and on a good day I make about MK700 ($5) or more," Bernard says.

Banda is not the only one cashing in on a bicycle transport industry now booming because of the rising costs of fuel pushed up by strong global oil prices.

Along Mchinji road -- the highway linking Malawi to Zambia's eastern province -- colorfully decorated bicycles are neatly parked, waiting to transport students to a nearby government college, nursing staff to a hospital and visitors around the area.

The bicycles are remodeled to suit the business. A second seat is attached to the bicycle behind the driver's seat. The passenger seat is finished in colorful but cheap leather, comfortably sized to accommodate any size of passenger.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - For TV adventurer Bear Grylls the flavors of raw grubs, urine and yak eyeballs are fleeting, but the struggle of rationalizing a life of risk won't fade.

"The discomfort never lasts forever," Grylls said about eating raw snakes and frogs, and drinking fluid squeezed from fresh elephant dung.

It is all part of a day's work on his nature survival television show "Man vs. Wild" on the Discovery Channel.

"I'm used to the army and adjusting to things quite quickly," said the 33-year-old former British special forces soldier, who has jumped from a helicopter into places ranging from the jungles of Zambia to frozen Siberia for the show.

But revealing all the risks he faces to his wife and two young sons after coming home to his houseboat on the Thames river in London is a bit harder. He doesn't give details about how he dislocated a hip or broke thumbs or toes on both feet.

clipper's remarks: Simin Marefat, an unstoppable nurse: For almost 10 years, wherever she went, she saw enormous need and a huge deficit of resources around the globe from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan to Chile, Argentina, Peru and Bolivia.

She organized a benefit in 2006 that raised $14,000: the proceeds helped Orphans of Rwanda to build a health clinic at Gisimba Memorial Center. She visited the clinic in June 2007 to see that the children all have health cards with their pictures and vaccinations and medications. They have a nurse who provides for them. She then organized a second benefit which raised $18,000: the proceeds will cover tuition for 34 Orphans of Rwanda to go to school.

Fleeing Iran, her family arrived in the United States in 1986 to Hays, Kansas. It was that odyssey, beginning with escape, displacement, discrimination and eventual acceptance, Marefat says, that taught her anything was possible.

The government has watched as Zimbabwe turns into a fascist dictatorship and hundreds of thousands of refugees have poured into South Africa. The SA government has said very little to the government that has driven them out, but instead treasts the refugees almost as badly as they are treated at home.

During the South African liberation struggle South African exiles found homes in neighbouring countries, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mocambique, as well as places further away such as Britain, Sweden and other European countries. Yet now when we have our freedom and others flee to us for asylum, we persecute them,

South African police have raided Johannesburg's Central Methodist Church, arresting around 1,500 homeless people and Zimbabweans.

The police said they were looking for drugs, guns and illegal immigrants.

But Paul Verryn, the church's bishop, described the raid as a violation of the sanctity of the church. "I think it is despicable," he told the BBC.

Bishop Verryn said he would have gladly co-operated with the police if they had asked for his help to search the building and check the papers of those inside.

He said the way the police handled those they arrested during the raid was a clear violation of their rights.

It was, he added, an attack on the very institution of the Church.

Wednesday night's raid is the first time the police have targeted the Central Methodist Church, which is widely respected as a shelter for some of the city's most desperate people.

Nationwide power outages shut down basic services across Zambia and Zimbabwe for hours on Saturday and Sunday and South Africa's electricity utility said it would suspend exports to neighboring countries amid mounting anger over power cuts that have wreaked havoc in the continent's economic hub.

South Africa's utility company Eskom said Sunday it had stopped supplying electricity to Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia because of the dire shortage at home. Normally about 95 percent is used locally and the rest sold abroad.

"When we don't have enough capacity for domestic use we don't sell electricity. There is no surplus so there are no exports," Eskom spokesman told the South African Press Association.

Large parts of the country are suffering blackouts often lasting several hours. Eskom says demand is simply too high for it to keep up with, but there is mounting fury that the power cuts are unpredictable and are causing unnecessary economic losses and personal misery.
