"Blue Voyage"

A Giant Yacht Sails to San Francisco

In the exclusive world of grandiose yachts, the Maltese Falcon of Tom Perkins may be the most grandiose of all. On Saturday, it arrives on American shores for the first time, sailing into San Francisco Bay.

Mr. Perkins is a legendary Silicon Valley figure. At Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, the venture capital firm he co-founded in 1972, he made millions financing companies like Netscape and Genentech when they were still young. He has recently made headlines as the Hewlett-Packard director who resigned from the board in 2006 after discovering the corporate spying scandal. He is also Danielle Steel’s ex-husband.

The Maltese Falcon is, when measured at the water line, the longest privately owned sailboat in the world, according to David A. Kaplan, who hung out with Mr. Perkins and wrote “Mine’s Bigger: The Extraordinary Tale of the World’s Greatest Sailboat and the Silicon Valley Tycoon Who Built It.”

Somali pirates face charges in France

PARIS: French officials have filed preliminary charges against six suspected Somali pirates accused of taking two French citizens captive off the coast of East Africa this month, a judicial official said.

The six were captured in a French commando operation to free the hostages Sept. 15 and were flown to France and jailed.

Preliminary charges for "hijacking a boat" and "taking captive several hostages to try to obtain a ransom," were filed against them late Thursday, a judicial official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Elite French troops wearing night-vision goggles killed one pirate, captured six others and pulled the French Polynesian couple to safety in the rescue operation.

Somalia,

doesn't have a navy, and its fragile government has sought international help to fight the problem. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for other nations to join in taking decisive action against Somali pirates disrupting commerce and aid operations.

Montenegro's leading daily newspaper, Vijesti, earlier reported that during McCain's visit in 2006 he celebrated with birthday cocktails and sweets aboard the Celine Ashley yacht. SYDNEY (Reuters) - Hopes of saving a baby whale abandoned by its mother in a bay north of Sydney faded late on Wednesday as the calf continued to try to suckle from a moored yacht. International experts said it had just days to live.

The humpback whale, nicknamed "Colin" by Australian media, was found at Pittwater after apparently being abandoned by its mother off Australia's east coast.

After U.S.-based whale rescue experts said the animal could not be saved without sophisticated equipment, wildlife authorities said the fast-weakening calf would probably have to be put down unless it could be paired with a migrating whale pod.

"I guess it's fair to say that we're getting close to that position at the moment. We're really, really hopeful that there can be some other possible way through," Environment Department spokesman John Dengate told Australian radio.
