MINNEAPOLIS – Vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's dazzling smile and rhetorical stiletto may have thrilled the Republican National Convention last night. But Democrats panned her performance Thursday, saying the main things she proved is that she can deliver a good speech, she can parrot Bush-McCain attack lines and she isn't ready to be vice president.

"She mastered the words written by the Bush speech writers and delivered them well," said Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, adding that the speech was a string of partisan attacks "that we've heard before… Unfortunately, that's what locks D.C. into the paralysis that's been there for years."

As a US Army Officer, I listened to Governor Palin's speech last night trying to gleen her priorities in a new administration as there are many issues that will affect the future of the Army.

Governor Palin talked about many things last night but the there is one important piece of unfinished business that will linger to the next Administration.

That piece of unfinished business was obviously not considered worthy by her speech writers.

There are two great politicians of the last century who had great oratory skills and often relied on speech writers.

Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher often strayed from their speech writers adding and correcting their given text.

Sarah Palin is no Ronald Reagan.

Sarah Palin is no Margaret Thatcher.

Afgahnistan is not a dirty word.

At 12:15 p.m. yesterday, as the United States bombed Afghanistan for a second day, a sequined Liza Minnelli took the stage at the White House to sing a song, moments after President Bush signed a Columbus Day proclamation.

The everything-is-normal image of calm resolution, punctuated by calls of patriotism and unity from the White House, were in sharp contrast to the images from halfway around the world -- angry anti-American mobs and fuzzy, green TV footage of bombs dropping.

The message at home is: We're doing the right thing, so carry on with your lives. And the message to Arab countries is: We're fighting terrorism, not Islam.

But no matter how many packaged meals the United States drops or how many assurances it gives that this isn't a war against Afghans, many in the Middle East remain unconvinced.

She writes in longhand, and while she doesn’t have a formal schedule, she says she prefers to write in the morning, before breakfast . She’s a creative writing professor, and on the days she teaches, she says she writes for an hour or 45 minutes before leaving for her first class. On other days, when the writing is going well, she can work for hours without a break — and has breakfast at 2 or 3 in the afternoon!

1. Stephen King. In his book On Writing, King says that he writes 10 pages a day without fail, even on holidays.

2. Ernest Hemingway. By contrast with King, “Papa” Hemingway wrote 500 words a day.

3. Vladimir Nabokov. The author of such great novels as Lolita, Pale Fire and Ada did his writing standing up, and all on index cards.

4. Truman Capote. The author of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood” claimed to be a “completely horizontal author.” He said he had to write lying down, in bed or on a couch, with a cigarette and coffee.

5. Philip Roth. One of the greatest living American writers, Roth works standing up, pacing around as he thinks. He claimed to walk half a mile for every page he writes.

6. James Joyce

Joyce prided himself in taking his time with each sentence. A famous story has a friend asking Joyce in the street if he’d had a good day writing. Yes, Joyce replied happily. How much had he written? Three sentences, Joyce told him.

Writers’ invisibility has little or nothing to do with Fame, just as Fame has little or nothing to do with Literature. (Fame merits its capital F for its fickleness, Literature its capital L for its lastingness.) Thespians, celebrities and politicians, whose appetite for bottomless draughts of public acclaim, much of it manufactured, is beyond any normal measure, may feed hotly on Fame – but Fame is always a product of the present culture: topical and variable, hence ephemeral. Writers are made otherwise. What writers prize is simpler, quieter and more enduring than clamorous Fame: it is recognition. Fame, by and large, is an accountant’s category, tallied in Amazonian sales. Recognition, hushed and inherent in the silence of the page, is a reader’s category: its stealth is its wealth.

Teachers need to be taught how to write if children are to reach their cre-ative writing potential, according to research due to be published next week (September 10). Summer schools for teachers from different subjects should be set up where they can learn the craft of writing and take their new skills back to the classroom, it is being suggested. The 10-day summer schools would be held during the holiday and be the core part of a national writing project that would be adopted across the UK, researcher Richard Andrews, professor in English at the Institute of Education in London, proposes. He says: "We need to deepen our competency of writing as teachers in order to help kids become better writers themselves."

"Both campaigns seemed to have decided that Hillary Clinton's 18 million voters represent a key swing bloc in this election -- both Barack Obama's speech and John McCain's pick were at least partially aimed at them," Wolfson said in an e-mail. "The fact that Palin is pro-life and pro-gun will be a block for many of Senator Clinton's supporters -- but not all. And it will raise the question for many why Senator Obama didn't pick Senator Clinton as his running mate."
