Critics charge that with the aim of production at any cost, regardless of the damage to the surrounding people and land, Shell disrupted thousands of lives and wreaked havoc on the environment. In the early 1990’s, the people of Nigeria began to protest. Shell made payments and provided arms to security forces that they knew to be abusive to local communities. The military government violently repressed the demonstrations and arrested and bribed witnesses. Nine leaders of the demonstrations were murdered, including the aforementioned well-known activist and writer, Ken Saro-Wiwa.

Clip Source: www.earthrights.org

Judge Kimba Wood of the U.S.

Credit: Dreamstime

Scientists have discovered mystery snippets of mammal DNA
that have survived eons of evolution and yet have no apparent purpose. The
finding reveals just how much we don't know about the secrets hidden in our
genome and that of other animals.

Most genes change throughout evolution via mutations; useless
ones eventually get weeded out of the population while the helpful
modifications take hold. However, about 500 regions of our DNA — the body's
instruction code made up of base pairs of molecules — have apparently
remained intact throughout the history of mammalian evolution, or the past 80
million to 100 million years, basically free of mutations.

Mutations are introduced into these regions just as
they are everywhere else, but they're swept out of the genome much more quickly,

<clipSource>http://www.livescience.com/health/081009-mystery-dna.html</clipSource>

Palin transitioned from incompetent to contemptible

clipped by: lifecyce1898
clipper's remarks: from bumbling incompetent to xenophobic hate monger, no doubt with McBush's covert approval.

Clip Source: www.watchblog.com

Sen. Biden had a command of the details and historical facts, too many of them in the first half of the debate, but, if his objective was to reflect the Bush years into a McCain presidency, he was successful. Gov. Palin alleviated fears and anxieties over her appearing to be an air head with a solid rehearsed bag of tricks, like avoiding the questions, reverting to taxes, and attack, attack, attack. She stood toe to toe with Joe, and her base will praise her for it till the cows come home and long after.

<clipSource>http://www.watchblog.com/thirdparty/archives/006227.html</clipSource>

As seen on TV - Drill Here Drill Now Song

clipped by: AMC is looking to outer space as it beefs up its slate, developing
a series project with writer/executive producer Jonathan Hensleigh
based on the sci-fi novel "Red Mars."

"Mars," a 1992 novel by Kim Stanley Robinson, chronicles the
inhabitants of the first human colony on the planet. Hensleigh
("Armageddon") is the writer and will executive produce alongside
Michael Jaffe and Howard Braunstein of Jaffe Braunstein
Entertainment ("The Memory Keeper's Daughter") and Vince Gerardis,
Ralph Vicinanza and Eli Kirschner of Created By ("Jumper").

AMC is no stranger to the sci-fi arena: The network also is
prepping a miniseries remake of the 1960s sci-fi series "The
Prisoner," starring Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellen. But "Prisoner,"
Wayne said, is "not strictly sci-fi" and instead "runs the gamut"
from psychological thriller to sci-fi to drama.

<clipSource>http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3i149edf3e04ae016878819cfa89830a85?fark</clipSource>

Stem cell alternative advance

clipped by: chipperdean

Clip Source: www.washingtonpost.com

Scientists Report Advance in Stem Cell Alternative

Scientists reported yesterday that they have overcome a major obstacle to using a promising alternative to embryonic stem cells, bolstering prospects for bypassing the political and ethical tempest that has embroiled hopes for a new generation of medical treatments.

The researchers said they found a safe way to coax adult cells to regress into an embryonic state, alleviating what had been the most worrisome uncertainty about developing the cells into potential cures.

"We have removed a major roadblock for translating this into a clinical setting," said Konrad Hochedlinger, a Harvard University stem cell researcher whose research was published online yesterday by the journal Science. "I think it's an important advance."

The development is the latest in the rapidly advancing and politically charged field of stem cell research.

Great folders include the Breezer Zigzag, the Brompton, and the KHS Mocha/Latte. If you are a multimodal bicycle commuter fearful of rapid crowding on transit systems, or live in a small apartment, or lack secure bike parking and need to bring your bike into your office/workplace--you might want to consider a folding bike.

Clip Source: bikecommutetips.blogspot.com

Of all the folding bikes available, what was appealing about this bike? First, the Giant Halfway is relatively affordable, sold at an attractive price point.

Second, it is relatively quick to fold. Many folders, such as some models of the Bike Friday line--are really travel bikes--offering great ride quality but requiring more time to collapse; suitable for a trip to Europe or elsewhere, but maybe not the best option for quick folding as you rush to your bus or train.

It is also very smartly designed. The geometry is great; meaning the ride quality doesn't feel cramped, "squirrelly," or uncomfortable. The single front fork (above) facilitates quick folding, and also easy repairs of flats. You don't need to remove the entire wheel, just the inntertube.

also offers great features, such as fenders, kickstand, and a rear rack. The designers even created a special mount (above) for the fenders and kickstand, showing the Halfway's intended purpose as a practical commuter.

Tags: bikes, folding-bikes, reviews, recommendations

<clipSource>http://bikecommutetips.blogspot.com/2008/08/new-bike-giant-halfway.html</clipSource>

More Men Taking Their Wives' Last Names

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clipper's remarks: "All in all, the couple say it has been worth the trouble, because they share a name. When indie musician Todd Baechle married Orenda Fink, he made a decision that rocked some worlds. He took his wife's last name.

And — most troubling for Fink — it was grueling to navigate the legal process of changing his name. Many county and state officials didn't know what to do.

There's a slow-growing trend for men to take their spouses' last names. No local, state or national agency records the instances, but anecdotal evidence nationwide indicates it's more common

Todd Fink made the choice for a number of reasons.

When Todd Fink informed his family, his parents were surprised — and not pleased.

"They eventually accepted it," he said. "They understand I'm still the same son I was before, even though I have a different name."

"Humans trust traditions,"

Sometimes you have to walk off the sidewalk if you want new experiences.

<clipSource>http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1219&u_sid=10450923</clipSource>

Huge number of links

clipped by: carovatom

Clip Source: bloxword.ca

           Jim's Word / Writer's Links
