Here at Tech Ticker we love to check in with the legends of Silicon Valley. And Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak, of course, is one of one of the undisputed greats.

On a beautiful Palo Alto day recently, I sat down to speak to Woz, engineer to engineer, geek to geek.

Back in the day, Steve Wozniak developed a game for Atari called Breakout. His friend Steve Jobs sold it for him. Jobs told Wozniak he sold it for $700, and split the proceeds. Actually, Jobs sold it for several thousand dollars and kept most of the cash for himself.

What Steve does on the good side -- like the music scenario [in which] we didn't bring just a music device called the iPod, we brought a whole music system: a store that sells it, a computer that manages and organizes it. And an iPod is just a satellite to your computer. Plug it in and it works. You don't have to do anything. You've got to admire Steve for that kind of thinking. Nobody's perfect. [Everybody is] going to have cases where they did something bad to somebody, said something nasty to them and maybe regret it later.

W00t Wins Webster's Word of the Year

W00t, that expression of joy invented by gamers way back when Sonic and Tails were special friends, has been given the accolade of word of the year by Webster's dictionary. The word, which beat the verb "to facebook" has an uncertain providence: while some people think it is an acronym for "We own the other team", others believe it is a mere exhortation of joy, like "Yippee" or, as we say in my crib, "Huzzarahrah." My reaction is after the jump.

In a move of supreme populism, Websters invited people to vote online for a shortlist of 20 words, and it woz w00t wot won it. This was their official statement.

Epcot's Spaceship Earth reopens with a cameo from Woz

Disney just finished refurbishing the iconic Spaceship Earth attraction at Disney World, and it looks like a certain board member gave a little shout-out to a friend: there's (animatronic) Woz in the garage, diligently hacking away on what appears to be the mutant offspring of an Apple I and the Lisa. Anyone else see this yet? We're dying to know if there's a check made out for $350 with "Breakout" listed in the memo line.

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak "Lego" playset

After a long hiatus, the latest PodBrix custom minifig product Young Woz and Jobs Playset goes on sale in two days (8/29/07) at 9:00 PM EST time. Re-creating the early years of Woz and Jobs collaboration the Young Woz and Jobs Playset is a 300 unit limited numbered edition and features meticulous detail. What ideas was Jobs percolating in his subconscious back in 1972? The included mini thought bubble attempts to answer the question.

Hand created by Tomi, each playset contains a young version of Jobs and Woz immortalized in minifig form. The backdrop set features a desk with custom made computer, circuit board based project in progress, and a 2001 style calendar marking a fateful date. The reverse of the backdrop displays the limited edition unit number and is signed by Tomi. Some assembly is required.

Each Young Woz and Jobs Playset will sell for $39.99. More details and product photos will be available on the PodBrix.com site at 9:00 PM EST time on August 29th.

I was reading John Hammond's biography entry, (John discovered Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen and yes, Count Basie) and I noticed that he was independently wealthy.

Woz wasn't looking to make a lot of money when he invented the Apple computer, and Nolan Bushnell certainly didn't imagine he was creating the video game industry when he invented Pong. Cory and the rest of the boingboing team had no revenue for years, and Digg and Yahoo! and dozens of other key websites were started without an eye on profit, never mind revenue. The same thing is true for Julia Child and Gene Roddenberry and Dean Kamen.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more it seems that pioneers are almost never in it for the money. The smart ones figure out how to take a remarkable innovation and turn it into a living (or a bigger than big payout) but not the other way around. I think the reason is pretty obvious: when you try to make a profit from your innovation, you stop innovating too soon. You take the short payout because it's too hard to stick around for the later one.

Irony #1 is that business journalists always ask pioneers about the money. And then they are incredulous when they hear the answer. They make up bogus numbers or just assume the pioneer is lying. They don't see the trend.

Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs created Apple Computers together, but Jobs wouldn't bite when asked to write the intro to Wozniak's memoir, "iWoz."

"We wanted him to do a foreword, but he declined," Wozniak tells Jacob Bernstein this week in WWDScoop, the new magazine from Women's Wear Daily. "He felt the book sort of portrayed me as a good guy and him as an a-hole."

Among other anti-Jobs anecdotes, Wozniak recalls in the book that when he invented a universal remote control and sent it to Jobs, he threw it against a wall, stuck it in a box, and mailed it back. "Steve had a fit about it," Wozniak tells Bernstein. "He was under the impression that I'd left Apple in a very negative mode."

But the engineering egghead says any passages that seem to dis and dismiss Jobs were the flavors stirred in by his ghostwriter, Gina Smith. "That's largely Gina's choice in writing, what to pick and how to say it," says the Wizard of Woz. "I would speak stories into the microphone and she would edit it together. I have limited time."
