The road Abraham travelled passed through villages and cities whose names have changed or been lost to the ages.

One of those is the ancient city of Anbar.

Persians, Romans and Arabs all fought battles over this ancient city.

The Roman leader Gordian died at Anbar.

The Arab General Khalid wrested the city from the Persians.

Centuries later, U.S. Marines and Soldiers fought house to house in the same city. We know it now as Fallujah.

Scarsely two years ago, Al Anbar province was thought to be lost. But just yesterday, control of the province was handed over to the Iraqi government.

This victory will not be splashed across the headlines above the fold. It will be buried under a hurricane, a Vice Presidential nominee and the Republican Convention.

But it is a victory worthy of the ages as the coalition and Iraqi citizens defeated one of the greatest evils of our time.

Like Abraham, Gordian and the others of history who tread the banks of the Euphrates river--they have made their mark.

As a US Army Officer, I listened to Governor Palin's speech last night trying to gleen her priorities in a new administration as there are many issues that will affect the future of the Army.

Governor Palin talked about many things last night but the there is one important piece of unfinished business that will linger to the next Administration.

That piece of unfinished business was obviously not considered worthy by her speech writers.

There are two great politicians of the last century who had great oratory skills and often relied on speech writers.

Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher often strayed from their speech writers adding and correcting their given text.

Sarah Palin is no Ronald Reagan.

Sarah Palin is no Margaret Thatcher.

Afgahnistan is not a dirty word.

A Tour of Hilliard Theater

Lakewood has been known by many epithets, but probably its most recognizable is “The City of Beautiful Homes”, and it is that name that the Lakewood Historical Society showcases each year at the biennial House Tour.

At each House Tour, the Lakewood Historical Society tries to feature a variety of homes and buildings in Lakewood that are distinctive and representative of the accolades that the city has won from publications such as “Old House Magazine” who named it the best place to buy old homes.

This year there will be eight structures featured including the Hilliard Theatre that sits on Lakewood's West End.

Built in 1927, the Hilliard Theatre was heralded as “a theatre dedicated to wholesome entertainment-worthy of the community of which it is a part.” At the time, it was one of the premier theatre structures in the Cleveland area and has an array of distinguished elements including an arcade that gave both Madison and Hilliard Avenues access to the theatre.

*Three men conspire to kill Obama.

They get guns, with scopes (one of which may have been stolen).
The rent a vehicle under someone elses name.
They have body armor.
They express a, violent, antipathy to the candidate.

They have travelled to the city the candidate is going to be in.

This is, "not a credible threat and no charges related to that aspect of things are entertained.

*One man, already in jail sends a nastygram to to Mccain's office.

He says there is some lethal powder in the letter, and the person reading it is dead.
He admits McCain might not be reading it.

He has no actual poisons.

This something we won't tolerate.

So, here you have it.

Death threats, from those incapable of carrying them out against the Republican candidate = charges

Death plots, with overt acts, weapons and actual plans... not credible; not worthy of charges.

US vessel moors in Sevastopol Bay (Ukraine)

US Coast Guard Cutter Dallas entered the Bay of Sevastopol. Thousands of protesting city residents met the boat at the bay. People chanted loudly “Go home!” and waved banners “STOP NATO!”

The second line of defense was held on Grafsky dock where people also held posters demanding the NATO warship to retract from Sevastopol.

So far, the American seamen have not been allowed ashore. According to one of the customs officials, the ship's commander is concerned with the anti-NATO sentiments in the city and does not rely on the Sevastopol administration's statements that the situation in the city is under control. It's most likely that, if Dallas's crew go ashore, they will do it in civil clothes.

The US Coast Guard Cutter Dallas arrived in Sevastopol from the Georgian port of Batumi where, according to the vessel's command, it was unloading, during the night and in secrecy, “drinking water for wounded Georgian soldiers.”

SONS OF LIBERTY, or Sons of something altogether different? I suppose it all depends on a particular individual's point of view.

Shrouded in secrecy, the origins of the Sons of Liberty are in dispute. Some historical sources claim that the movement began in New York City in January 1765. A more popular claim is that the movement began in Boston, Massachusetts through the leadership of one Samuel Adams (a well known American Revolutionary firebrand) in early 1765

Was this an early terrorist action or a patriotic action. Surely, the answer lies with perspective. If you were a British official, this action was treasonous and punishable by death. If you were an American colonial citizen, this event would be seen as a glorious action of the freedom fighters worthy of praise, pride, and acclaim.

During a series of protests linked to the Sons of Liberty, colonists burn and sack the house of the Massachusetts lieutenant governor, Thomas Hutchinson.

This is a good book to get one thinking about information displays, but putting them into practice is more challenging. Although much of what Tufte criticizes in displays could be considered "nitpicking," his points do have merit, albeit very difficult to put into practice with one's own work that does not model his examples. Personally, I do not agree with all of his criticisms as what is considered ideal, is to an extent, subjective.

Lego has launched the biggest model in its 74-year history - a 5,922-piece replica of the Taj Mahal.

Priced at £200 the model will be on sale from September and is considered to be so tricky that only those over the age of 14 are recommended to tackle it.

When finished the model measures 3ft wide and 2ft tall and uses a whopping 800 more Lego bricks than the company's next biggest model - the Star Wars Millennium Falcon.

Lego spokeswoman Jenny Brown said the Taj Mahal model was designed only for very experienced enthusiasts, adding: "It will certainly present a worthy challenge to most Lego fans - but a fun one".

The original Taj Mahal, in northern India, was built in the 17th century in memory of an emperor's wife. It took 22 years and 20,000 workers.

It won't take Lego fans quite as long; they can build their own replica, complete with domes, minarets, arches and stairs, in a little under 40 hours.

The individual airline companies have little - or nothing - to do with the TSA and other ridiculous homeland security policies that don’t actually make us safer (although these policies have spawned a whole cottage industry of 3 ounce toiletry products). A consumer wouldn’t be out of line to think, however, that airlines would acknowledge the indignities of air travel, and do their very best to assuage this for their customers. Think again. With US Airways now charging for water, and Jet Blue charging for in-flight blankets and pillows, the nickel-and-diming of air travel passengers has hit a new low. In no way does the airline industry indicate that it believes the customer is king, always right, or even worthy of respect.

DENVER — Amid a spate of awkward on-air conflicts among MNSBC anchors at this week’s Democratic convention, some staff members say there are sharp internal disputes at the cable network over whether its opinion and personality-driven political coverage has crossed the line.

In addition to Olbermann, MSNBC personalities Chris Matthews, Joe Scarborough and David Shuster were involved in Denver controversies.

On Monday evening, Olbermann interrupted Scarborough while he was talking about McCain being competitive in the polls. “Jesus, Joe, why don’t you get a shovel?” Olbermann remarked.
