Michael is a tech savvy visionary who was the 4th employee at eBay and an early employee of Oracle. There.com is a popular 3D social virtual world that allows users to build avatars that 1) express themselves in a graphically rich, online environment, 2) communicate with other users in real time via chatting and voice chat and 3) build social networks with other members via their avatars. Roger Highfield, Telegraph: Scientists working on the world's biggest machine are being besieged by phone calls and emails from people who fear the world will end next Wednesday, when the gigantic atom smasher starts up.

The Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, where particles will begin to circulate around its 17 mile circumference tunnel next week, will recreate energies not seen since the universe was very young, when particles smash together at near the speed of light.

Such is the angst that the American Nobel prize winning physicist Frank Wilczek of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has even had death threats, said Prof Brian Cox of Manchester University, adding: "Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat."

The head of public relations, James Gillies, says he gets tearful phone calls, pleading for the £4.5 billion machine to stop.

Flags by Colours

Using a list of countries generated by The World Factbook database, flags of countries fetched from Wikipedia (as of 26th May 2007) are analysed by a custom made python script to calculate the proportions of colours on each of them. That is then translated on to a piechart using another python script. The proportions of colours on all unique flags are used to finally generate a piechart of proportions of colours for all the flags combined. (note: Colours making up less than 1% may not appear)

Global public opinion data shows a clear Obama trend across much of planet Earth.

I have devised a few theories on why Senator Barack Obama is so strongly favored by people living outside the U.S.

First

foreign audiences perceive Senator Obama as giving them what they want -- a change in US policy.

second

Senator Obama is, plain and simple, not George W. Bush -- who, as we know, is hugely unpopular overseas.

Third

symbolism

To elect Obama would paint American society as mature and tolerant

Fourth

its ability to reason

if Americans in 2008 end up electing the candidate that foreign publics consider the "right" choice

fifth

Senator Obama's hybrid, international identity seems to magically appeal to people all over the world all at the same time

His international upbringing makes him into a chameleon, from which foreign publics can pick and choose with which "Obama" they identify most -- the perceived Muslim, Asian, or African Obama, etc.
