Bright Children Become Enlightened Adults

ABSTRACT—We examined the prospective association between general intelligence (g) at age 10 and liberal and antitraditional social attitudes at age 30 in a large (N= 7,070), representative sample of the British population born in 1970. Statistical analyses identified a general latent trait underlying attitudes that are antiracist, pro-working women, socially liberal, and trusting in the democratic political system. There was a strong association between higher g at age 10 and more liberal and antitraditional attitudes at age 30; this association was mediated partly via educational qualifications, but not at all via occupational social class. Very similar results were obtained for men and women. People in less professional occupations—and whose parents had been in less professional occupations—were less trusting of the democratic political system.

Founded on the belief that newly arriving populations have inherent capabilities when given opportunities, ORR provides people in need with critical resources to assist them in becoming integrated members of American society. ORR funds State governments and private, non-profit agencies to provide social services that help refugees become self-sufficient as quickly as possible after their arrival in the United States. Social services are also provided through a variety of ORR grant initiatives that focus on special needs of refugees.

Day Care, Transportation, Case Management Translation/Interpreter Services and Assistance in Obtaining Employment Authorization Documents - some or all of these services are aimed at providing aids to smooth the process to employability for the refugee and his/her family; day care for working parents, transportation that is necessary to get to and from a job are illustrations of the adjunct services that can speed the way to gaining employment.

clipper's remarks: As a former NYC teaching fellow (similar program to Teach for America), I agree:
1. The educational system is broken.
2. The impact of an uneducated populace cannot be underestimated.
However, I strongly disagree that teachers are the single most important factor in student achievement. As a teacher in a crisis school (and now a parent), I strongly believe that PARENTS are the single most important factor in student achievement. Quality teachers ARE correlated with student achievement, because the best teachers find the highest job satisfaction in working with families that embrace the responsibility of learning. Schools with responsible, engaged parents CAN and do attract and retain good teachers.

The key to solving the educational crisis is to engage and equip parents LONG before their children reach school age, since the first 5 years are the most critical years of development. For one creative way to do just that, check out tumblon.com.

The United States truly is a nation at risk—our graduation rate ranks 19th among top developing countries.

Note to Obama and McCain: do the math. The impact an uneducated populace has on the integrity of the country's social fabric and the health of the economy cannot be underestimated.

It's the teachers, stupid! The single most important factor in student achievement is the quality of the teacher. And yet, we have no effective system to attract, train, retain and promote high-caliber candidates for our schools.

The majority of the "restaurants" in this study were fast food chains. What do you expect from fast food? Whether it says "kids meal" or not, if it's at a fast food place, it's very likely not going to be healthy and nutritious. In these places, "kids meals" are often just marketing ploys based on popular kids shows or toys. They're not nutritionally balanced to truly be healthy for a child.

Raising kids is a huge challenge, and with parents often working in addition to raising kids, they often need to find fast options to make things work. But you have to realize if you're getting fast food, it's not going to be healthy for your child.

Nearly every possible combination of the children's meals at Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, Sonic, Jack in the Box, and Chick-fil-A are too high in calories, the report by the Center for Science in the Public Interest said.

The report looked into the nutritional quality of kids' meals at 13 major restaurant chains.

The center found 93% of 1,474 possible choices at the 13 chains exceed 430 calories -- an amount that is one-third of what the National Institute of Medicine recommends that children ages four through eight should consume in a day.

Other restaurant chains included in the report are Wendy's, Dairy Queen, Arby's and Denny's.

Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, Sonic, Jack in the Box and Chick-fil-A, others load menus with calories; unhealthy for children, study claims.

Over the last two decades, the Indian immigrants in California's Fresno area have built at least a dozen Sikh temples to serve a growing community.

But many temples are often short of one thing: young adults, some of whom say they feel like outsiders.

They don't like the temple politics and don't have command of Punjabi, the primary language of the service.

Singh said most of the parents are immigrants who observe the religion as they did in India, reciting memorized verses. Many of the youths want a more Americanized service that allows for discussion and explanation.

"The parents are not worried about that or are busy with other things - working and trying to settle down," he said. "That's what's causing the feeling among the youth."

"This is very typical of what happens in the second generation. The usual model is the immigrant church or religious institution is tied to the old country," Busto said.

Struggling college students turn to food banks

SEATTLE - Just blocks from the University of Washington, a line of people shuffle toward a food pantry, awaiting handouts such as milk and bread.

For years, the small University District pantry has offered help to the working poor and single parents in this neighborhood of campus rentals. Now rising food prices are bringing another group: Struggling college students.

Some of the students are working their way through college with grants, loans and part-time jobs. Others are just reluctant to ask parents for more money.

"There's definitely been an increase in usage and demand. We're seeing more and more students that have never used the pantry before."

In the past year, the price of groceries has jumped nearly 5 percent, the highest increase in nearly two decades. The cost of some staples has shot up by more than 30 percent.

Ron Mueck (born 1958) is an Australian hyper-realist sculptor working in Great Britain. Born in Melbourne, Australia, to parents who were toy makers, he labored on children’s television shows for 15 years before working in special effects for such films as "Labyrinth", a 1986 fantasy epic starring David Bowie.

Mueck moved on to establish his own company in London, making photo-realistic props and animatronics for the advertising industry. Although highly detailed, these props were usually designed to be photographed from one specific angle hiding the mess of construction seen from the other side. Mueck increasingly wanted to produce realistic sculptures which looked perfect from all angles.

SARGODHA, PAKISTAN (BosNewsLife)-- Impoverished Christian parents in Pakistan's Punjab province were still awaiting justice Monday, June 30, more than two weeks after their teenage son died from rabies while working as a shepherd, because a radical Muslim "feudal lord" allegedly refused to provide him proper medical treatment.

The Muslim landlord, identified as Nawaz Wirk, had no comment. The case has underscored concerns over Christian teenagers and younger children being held in slave-like conditions in this predominantly Muslim country.

After treatment closer to home failed, he was rushed to a hospital in Lahore where the boy eventually told doctors he was biten by a stray dog, saying he had been warned by Muslim “feudal lord” not to reveal this fact or "face dire consequences."

There are several people I see regularly around Itipini who are about my age. It is impossible to look at them and not think about the wildly divergent paths our lives have taken since 1982. Often they have a child (or children), many have HIV, virtually none has a high school diploma, none has a formal job, and all live in tumbling-down shanties that barely deserve the word. As I’ve gotten to know them over the months, I’ve realized many of them are also quite talented, funny, intelligent, and hard-working, and, really, not all that different from me.

What’s been different, of course, is the opportunities available to us by virtue of where we were born and where and how we were raised

I had access to supportive parents, good schools, and an economy that produced opportunities like this one, among a whole host of other advantages. My peers in Itipini had almost none of that

clipper's remarks: What interest me in The predator series also makes me wonder if it is a set up. maybe we have been overzealous in trying to prosecute every person who ever chat in such site. I never doubt some of them is guilty but you still cannot prosecute someone for chating. I have a friend in college who once got so drunk and went on Greyhound. He accidentally brushed against a little girl. The parents screamed MOLESTATION and a MOP formed and beat the shit out of him. The police came and threw him in county jail for 5 days . It took another 2 years of legal fighting to clear his name before every charges was dropped.

NEW YORK - NBC Universal has settled a $105 million lawsuit brought by a woman who claimed a televised sex sting by "Dateline NBC: To Catch A Predator" drove her brother to kill himself.

Patricia Conradt's lawsuit had claimed her brother, a suburban Dallas prosecutor, fatally shot himself after he was accused of engaging in a sexually explicit online chat with an adult posing as a 13-year-old boy.

The lawsuit claimed NBC "steamrolled" authorities to arrest Louis William Conradt Jr. after telling police he failed to show up at a sting operation 35 miles away.

NBC was working with the activist group Perverted Justice on the sting, in which people impersonating children established online chats with men and tried to lure them to a house, where they were met by TV cameras and police.
