JK ROWLING was denied a top US honour because President George Bush's advisers believed her books "encouraged witchcraft", it was claimed last night.

A new book reveals the Scots-based Harry Potter author was nominated for a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

But White House officials objected because they said she promoted SORCERY in her boy wizard series, which has been made into smash-hit movies starring Daniel Radcliffe

So they stopped JK receiving the US's top gong for civilians who contribute to America, world peace or culture.

The claim is made in Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor, written by Matt Latimer, an ex-speechwriter for Bush.

He said "narrow thinking" led "people in the White House to actually object to giving the author JK Rowling a presidential medal because the Harry Potter books encourage witchcraft".

In Nigeria, the Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network reports that nearly 25,000 children have been abandoned or persecuted on the belief they were witches or wizards.

Organizations such as the United Nations Children’s Fund, Africa Unite Against Child Abuse, and Save the Children have stepped in where they could to stop the witch-hunt. But the phenomenon of “witch children” is so widespread throughout Africa these organizations have set up “witch camps” as shelters for children who cannot be safely placed with a relative.

Child Witches

This Halloween, many American children will dress up as witches. And we’ll hear their laughter and see their smiles as they joyfully go from door to door trick-or-treating.

But in some places across the globe and here, children would never pretend to be witches because the consequences are not only dire but they can also be deadly.

For example, nine-year-old Nwanaokwo Edet of Nigeria was accused of being a witch by the family pastor. Nwanaokwo’s father forced acid down his throat as an exorcism, burning away his face and eyes. Nwanaokwo died a month later.

And, eight-year-old Shilua Salifu of Ghana now lives with her grandmother after being accused of being a witch. Shilua’s mother tried to saw off the top of her skull to let the demons fly away.

ARLINGTON — A wee bit o’ Scotland has come to the outskirts of Cowboys Stadium, and with it a foggy auld controversy over whether a Scottish sculpture park is also a pagan shrine that might hex the Dallas Cowboys.

City leaders and the family of late philanthropist Jane Mathes Kelton gathered Thursday to rededicate Caelum Moor, a former $3 million corporate sculpture park now relocated as public art along the bonny banks of Johnson Creek.

The letter was headlined, "No Witchcraft Park in Arlington."

In a Thursday phone interview, Tummillo called Caelum Moor "a mockery of Christianity" and said those near the park — including the Cowboys — are "in a dance with the devil."

Tummillo was a youth pastor with the now-disbanded Redeeming Love Covenant Church when the Rev. Danny Smith and his wife, Dena, took their witchcraft warnings nationwide on CNN and even to the syndicated TV entertainment show Strange Universe.

Vinegar Tom is the title of a 1976 feminist play by British playwright Caryl Churchill. The play examines gender and power relationships through the lens of 17th century witchcraft trials in England. It tells its story in part through features of the epic theater associated with German playwright Bertolt Brecht, particularly the non-realistic use of songs. The play's title comes from the name of a grotesque creature supposed to be a witch's familiar spirit. The play was inspired by the women's rights act in 1970 and explored the thought women were treated unequal in England at the time.

'Vinegar Tom' has many references to the way men treated women; for example, the opening of the play shows a woman named Alice who is in her early 20s and a man who is unnamed. The man uses Alice for sex.

Witchcraft and Children in Africa: How to Read the Bible Badly

Some African churches have taken a frightening literal turn: accusing children of witchcraft and torturing or killing them to purify their souls.

Over the weekend, the Associated Press reported that more than 15,000 Nigerian children have been accused of being witches in the last decade, with around 1,000 of those children murdered because of the accusation.

These were not random acts of violence. Instead, family members and pastors often executed their children claiming to literally follow the biblical injunction, "You shall not allow a witch to live"

In addition, thousands of children have suffered torture at the hands of "exorcists" who charged their impoverished parents vast sums to cleanse their children of witchery.

In Eket, Nigeria, local police try to stop the worst abuses. But they confess, "We cannot afford to make enemies of all the churches around here" and say that the "vast majority" are involved in the practice.

Gay penguins book is most banned

Authors, artists and musicians are due to gather at a library in San Francisco to protest against the banning of books in schools and libraries in the US.

Since 2001 bans on 3,736 books and other materials have been requested.

In recent years, And Tango Makes Three - based on a true story and centring on gay penguins in New York's Central Park Zoo - has had the most ban requests.

Other classic literature subjected to complaints include JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling also feature on the list.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that Harry Potter author JK Rowling missed out on the Presidential Medal of Freedom because some US politicians believed she "encouraged witchcraft".

In a stunning show of tolerance that defies theocon C-Streetism, the GOP in Queens, New York will not replace pagan high priest Dan Halloran as their candidate for District 19 city council in the Nov. 3 election. Considering George Bush administration officials objected to giving author J.K. Rowling the Presidential Medal of Freedom because the Harry Potter books "encouraged witchcraft," that's a very open-minded stance.

Halloran -- an attorney and partner in the firm Palmieri, Castiglione & Halloran who served as legal counsel and incorporating attorney for the New York City Pagan Pride Project, and the chairman of the state Republican Liberty Caucus, has been endorsed by the Queens County Republican Party.

Pagans are everywhere, I've been saying it for years.

But an official Republican Party candidate! Move over Christian right, here come the Pagans. I certainly disagree with his politics, but it's great that he's running.

School of witchcraft opens in Taiwan

A school of witchcraft has been started by an aboriginal tribe in southern Taiwan who fear that their ancestral rituals would otherwise vanish.

Witchcraft is an important part of the Paiwan tribe’s culture, but the number of practising witches it has produced has recently dropped sharply.

The school, which opened last July, has ten students, but the organisers hope it will expand.

“Passing on psychic acts to the young generation is a good way to understand Paiwan culture. We can go back to see how ancestors lived.

“The most sticking problem is that we do not have a written language. That makes it hard for young Paiwans to learn the ritual.”

The Paiwan tribe numbers about 86,000 people but has fewer than 20 witches, a decrease from more than 100 half a century ago.

Paiwan witches are seen as mediums between gods and humans, and the school teaches pupils rituals for blessing people and protecting them from evil.
