Want to ride the subway for free without having to jump the turnstiles? Well, as of Monday, you'll be able to do that by making a fake transit card.

A scientific paper detailing the security flaws in the Mifare Classic wireless smart card chip used in transit systems around the world is being published by the Radboud University Nijmegen. And a researcher at Humboldt University in Berlin has published a full implementation of the algorithm (PDF).

"Combining these two pieces of information, attacks can now be implemented by anyone," RFID researcher Karsten Nohl told CNET News. "All it takes is a $100 (card) reader and a little software."

Armed with the information in the papers, someone could steal the secret key from a Mifare Classic-based transit card and create a clone of it. As seen in a demonstration, data was collected wirelessly by merely brushing a card reader past someone carrying a card.

MIT researchers have started to test a new underwater robot that can hover in place like a helicopter. The two-meter-long Odyssey IV will be able to move autonomously up to depths of 6,000 meters at a speed of 2.5 meters per second. But unlike other underwater robots, it will be able to stop at a specific location. It could be used by oil companies to inspect the footings of offshore oil platforms. It also could be used by marine archaeologists or oceanographers for specific missions — depending on its price. But read more…

The new sensor system seeks to avoid this problem by tapping into trees as a self-sustaining power supply. Each sensor is equipped with an off-the-shelf battery that can be slowly recharged using electricity generated by the tree. A single tree doesn't generate a lot of power, but over time the "trickle charge" adds up, "just like a dripping faucet can fill a bucket over time," said Shuguang Zhang, one of the researchers on the project and the associate director of MIT's Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBE).

Many iPhone Users Ditched Their Carrier

Apple's iPhone 3G apparently created a summertime switch itch: 30 percent of all the smartphone's buyers bailed on their existing carriers in order to purchase the device, according to an NPD Group report released Monday.

AT&T has been the iPhone 3G's exclusive carrier in the U.S. since the smartphone was released in June.

According to the report, which covers June through August, 47 percent of those switching to AT&T to get the iPhone 3G came from Verizon Wireless, 24 percent from T-Mobile, and 19 percent from Sprint.

"While the original iPhone also helped win customers for AT&T, the faster network speeds of the iPhone 3G (have) proven more appealing to customers that already had access to a 3G network," Ross Rubin, NPD director of industry analysis, said in a statement.

By contrast, about 23 percent of consumers overall switched carriers from June through August.

First they’ve had massive success with the Eee PC and now they’ve unveiled a Macbook Air killer, the S101, which sports an Intel Atom processor under the hood. It’s .7-inches at its thickest point, weighs 2.2lbs, rocks a 10.2-inch LED backlit LCD (1024×768), and includes 20GB of online storage + 4-in-1 media card reader. Much like the Air, you’ll be limited to a non-removable 5-hour battery and you’ll have to tolerate the fixed 1GB of RAM. Wireless is had through 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.0. Fear not, it comes in Champagne and Graphite in addition to the pictured Brown (or is that Champagne?). Ports? 3x USB2.0, 1 Ethernet and 2 audio outs.

New millimeter-wave technology sends data at 10 gigabits per second.

There's no shortage of demand for faster wireless, but today's fastest technologies--Wi-Fi, 3G cellular networks, and even the upcoming WiMax--max out at tens or hundreds of megabits per second. So far, no commercial wireless system can beat the raw speed of optical fiber, which can carry tens of gigabits per second.

One way to achieve faster speeds is to harness the millimeter-wavelength frequency of the wireless spectrum, although this usually requires expensive and very complex equipment. Now, engineers at Battelle, a research and development firm based in Columbus, OH, have come up with a simpler way to send data through the air with millimeter-wave technology. Earlier this year, in field tests of a prototype point-to-point system, the team was able to send a 10.6-gigabit-per-second signal between antennas 800 meters apart. And more recently, the researchers demonstrated a 20-gigabit-per-second signal in the lab.

New Sony Reader has touch display, note-taking stylus

NEW YORK — Sony unveiled a new e-book reader Thursday with a built-in light and a touch-sensitive display, features that set it apart from Amazon.com's competing Kindle reader.

The PRS-700 is Sony's third model of the Reader, and will go on sale at the end of the month for about $400. It represents further experimentation on the part of manufacturers trying to find the right formula to make e-book readers more than a niche product. Neither Sony nor Amazon have revealed sales figures for their readers.

Like the earlier models and the Kindle, the PRS-700 has a six-inch screen of "electronic ink," which presents dark gray text on a light gray background. Unlike the liquid-crystal displays of laptops and cell-phones, e-ink displays cannot be lit from behind, but the PRS-700 has light-emitting diodes that can be turned on to illuminate the screen from the sides.

What's the slowest Internet connection you can think of? How about a 106-minute ping roundtrip? At 56 bytes per packet, that's 0.95 bps. That's a wireless connection, of course—by carrier pigeon. In 2001, a Linux user group in Norway decided to try to implement a joke protocol written in 1990 specifying how to transfer Internet data by pigeon. They pulled it off, but we're not too sure about the practicality.
