Living too close to wind turbines can cause heart disease, tinnitus, vertigo, panic attacks, migraines and sleep deprivation, according to groundbreaking research to be published later this year by an American doctor.

Dr Nina Pierpont, a leading New York paediatrician, has been studying the symptoms displayed by people living near wind turbines in the US, the UK, Italy, Ireland and Canada for more than five years. Her findings have led her to confirm what she has identified as a new health risk, wind turbine syndrome (WTS). This is the disruption or abnormal stimulation of the inner ear's vestibular system by turbine infrasound and low-frequency noise, the most distinctive feature of which is a group of symptoms which she calls visceral vibratory vestibular disturbance, or VVVD.

They cause problems ranging from internal pulsation, quivering, nervousness, fear, a compulsion to flee, chest tightness and tachycardia

not all people living close to turbines are susceptible.

She has identified a new health risk - wind turbine syndrome (WTS) - causing a wide range of problems ranging from internal pulsation, quivering, nervousness, fear, chest tightness and tachycardia – increased heart rate.

Dr Pierpont's studies indicate that humans are affected by low-frequency noise and vibrations from wind turbines through their ear bones, similar to fish and other amphibians.

Until now, the Government and the wind companies have rejected any health risks associated with the powerful noises and vibrations from wind turbines. They have argued that claims by Dr Pierpont are "imaginary" and are likely to argue against her latest findings.

Lord May, the former chief scientific adviser to the UK government, describes her research as "impressive, interesting and important".

Dozens of wind turbines are taking shape along Oregon 74, a designated Oregon Scenic Byway, near the home the Eatons have shared for 19 years.

Dr. Nina Pierpont of Malone, N.Y., coined the phrase "wind turbine syndrome" for what she says happens to some people living near wind energy farms. She has made the phrase part of the title of a book she's written called Wind Turbine Syndrome: A Report on the Natural Experiment. It is scheduled for publication next month by K-Selected Press of Santa Fe, N.M.

“The 86 giant wind turbines on the western end of Wolfe Island will generate enough electricity to power 75,000 homes”.

No they won’t. Here lies one of the biggest problems, the media. The wind industry and the govt. give statements like this to the media and they print it without any background checks to see if the information they are given is factual. The ISO (independent system operator) in Ontario gives the wind farms in Ont. a capacity credit of 10% of plated capacity. 10% is very generous considering it is the highest capacity factor I can find. Most operators give wind a capacity factor of between 2% and 8%.

Both situations cause problems that I would say resemble arrhythmia." ...One potential problem associated with wind power is noise, like that experienced by Tony. In some locations, residents living near wind farms find the sound to be an annoyance. A few, reporting acute and persistent health problems, have abandoned their homes, unable to sell them.

Members of Halkirk District Community Council have voted against the proposed wind farm at Spittal Hill and agreed that a leaflet should be prepared setting out some of the issues surrounding the £83 million venture. The 30-turbine scheme planned by Spittal Hill Windfarm Ltd, a company set up by brothers Tom and Steven Pottinger, was discussed at the community council's latest meeting. It was agreed by 4-2 that a letter should be sent to the Scottish Executive opposing the application on the grounds of close proximity to inhabited residences; potential noise problems; and cumulative effect.

A heresy in North Dakota nowadays: Confessing that wind farms actually may present problems.

Oh, but a wind turbine is such a clean, simple, natural-resource-friendly way to produce electricity. And North Dakota has the greatest wind energy potential in the country by any calculation.

One estimate is that our state eventually could generate 1,210 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Each kWh amounts to the work done by one kilowatt of electricity in one hour. Or, if you prefer, the potential production would be 300,000 megawatts.

We all know that the fuel required for renewable sources of energy are virtually limitless, hence the name. But what about the essential components that renewables like wind turbines and solar panels rely on to function? An article from The Economist (subscription required) highlights several production problems for the "clean-tech boom":

THESE should be heady times for Vestas, a Danish firm that makes more than a quarter of the world's wind turbines. The wind business is booming, and the company said last week that it had swung into profit in 2006, thanks to an 8% rise in revenue. But there is “significant unexploited production capacity”, Vestas says, due to shortages of high-quality turbine components. Other companies grumble about a lack of gearboxes and bearings.

An Australian company that wants to buy a Cambria County wind farm might walk away if it's not determined what caused seven turbine blades to crack and large pieces of two blades to fly off.

The problems at the Allegheny Ridge wind farm are a serious concern, said Neal Emmerton, regional asset manager for Sydney-based Babcock & Brown. Gamesa, the Spanish firm that developed the facility, has been paid, but the deal won't be final until the blade issues are resolved, he said.

Those problems have concerned her since she began investigating wind power two and a half years ago. That’s when Atlantic Wind Inc. erected an 80-metre tower in a field about 300 metres from her home to test wind speeds. The company is examining the possibility of erecting 20 to 27 turbines in the fields surrounding her home.

Other concerns — the potential health effects of proximity to high voltage power lines, the possibility of ice being thrown from the turbine blades, injuries to birds and bats flying into the blades or that the rotors could fail and be thrown from the turbines — led her to the conclusion that the county’s proposed setbacks are not adequate.
