Even as Barack Obama gave his soaring speech Thursday night, his campaign was playing hardball with its critics.

Team Obama has launched an offensive against WGN, the Chicago Tribune's radio station, for interviewing Stanley Kurtz. Mr. Kurtz is a conservative writer who this week forced the University of Illinois to finally open its records on Sen. Obama's association with William Ayers, the unrepentant 1970s Weather Underground terrorist.

If the full story of Mr. Obama's relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright had been revealed before the Iowa caucus, he wouldn't have won.

Aides claim Mr. Obama "has taken voluntary transparency steps" that allow "his constituents, the media and his political opponents to fully examine him."

This isn't what reporters expected when Mr. Obama began campaigning for a "new politics" that would bring honesty and openness to government.

Barack Obama and Weatherman terrorist Bill Ayers, who spent a number of years on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, were the leading powers behind a massive educational reform for the city of Chicago.

William Ayers prepared the proposal that got the seed money for the education reform program that would become the Chicago Annenberg Challenge - some $50M from the Annenberg Foundation, which was then matched by philanthropists and business interests - to total over $100M for Chicago's failing school system.

The Chairman of the Board was Barack Obama. William Ayers was an ex-officio board member.

The grants were evidently not given to schools, but rather to "external partners,"

In the meantime, after "external partners" received millions, ethnic identity didn't help math and science scores. It is interesting to note that this Chairman of the Board position was Obama's first "executive" experience.

Barack Obama is an immensely talented man whose talents have been largely devoted to crafting, and chronicling, his own life. Not things. Not ideas. Not institutions. But himself.

So where are the colleagues? The buddies? The political or spiritual soul mates? His most important spiritual adviser and mentor was Jeremiah Wright. But he's out. Then there's William Ayers, with whom he served on a board. He's out. Where are the others?

The oddity of this convention is that its central figure is the ultimate self-made man, a dazzling mysterious Gatsby. The palpable apprehension is that the anointed is a stranger — a deeply engaging, elegant, brilliant stranger with whom the Democrats had a torrid affair.

Having slowly woken up, they see the ring and wonder who exactly they married last night.

Obama not only aired a response ad to the spot linking him to William Ayers, but he sought to block stations [from airing] the commercial by warning station managers and asking the Justice Department to intervene. The campaign also planned to compel advertisers to pressure stations that continue to air the anti-Obama commercial.

Unable to dispute the accuracy of the ad, Obamatrons have been reduced to whining that Obama was only a little kid when his unrepentant mentor Ayers committed his vilest crimes against the America he so hates.

The American Issues Project, which created the ad, responds to the banana republic attempts to suppress it (PDF):

Surely we have not come to a point where the government and its agencies are used to protect presidential candidates from citizens' speech, essentially destroying the very purpose, meaning and historical essence of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

1. It's good to see the Obama campaign conceding that Ayers is "a radical" who committed crimes, not just "a professor who lives in Barack's neighborhood."

2. Why is McCain talking about the sixties? He isn't. He's talking about Obama's relationship with Ayers over the past two decades or so, and Obama's comfort working closely with a man who built bombs to kill American soldiers and cops.

3. The crimes were committed when Obama was eight. Well, Eric Rudolph committed his crimes quite a few years back. Does he get cut some slack?

4. I am sure the McCain campaign thanks their rival for running an ad in Ohio that depicts Ayers, calls him a radical, mentions his crimes. This will make it a much bigger story.

The Politico reports that Obama is running an ad in Ohio that attempts to rebut recent criticism from McCain and outside groups about his relationship with William Ayers. Here's the section on the man who planted bombs in the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, and police stations, and said in 2001 that he felt he "didn't do enough."

Obama: I'm Barack Obama, and I approved this message.

Announcer: With all our problems, why is John McCain talking about the sixties? Trying to link Barack Obama to radical Bill Ayers. McCain knows Obama denounced Ayers' crimes, committed when Obama was just eight years old. Let's talk about standing up for Obama today. John McCain wants to spend $10 billion a month in Iraq...

UPDATE: Allahpundit paraphrases: "Yes, we’re friendly, but it’s ancient history and I denounced what he did, so what’s the big deal about socializing with, um, an unrepentant terrorist?"

WASHINGTON — The conservative group running advertisements that highlight Senator Barack Obama’s association with the 1960s radical William Ayers is being financed by a Texas billionaire who has raised money for Senator John McCain and who also helped finance the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign against Senator John Kerry in 2004.

The billionaire, Harold Simmons, donated nearly $2.9 million on Aug. 12 to the American Issues Project, the group running the advertisements, papers it has filed with the Federal Election Commission show.

In 2004, Mr. Simmons donated $2 million to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose advertisements against Mr. Kerry included one that, with allegations since discredited, impugned his military service as a Swift boat captain during the Vietnam War.

The University of Illinois at Chicago said Friday it is releasing records of Barack Obama's service to a nonprofit organization linked to former 1960s radical William Ayers.

Ayers' Weatherman group took credit for bombings that included nonfatal blasts at the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol four decades ago.

The records of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, an organization that Obama chaired and that Ayers co-founded, will be made available to the public Tuesday, UIC said in a statement.

In the 1990s, Ayers was instrumental in starting the Chicago Annenberg Challenge

Obama and Ayers have other ties.

Ayers held a meet-the-candidate event at his home for Obama when Obama first ran for office in the mid-1990s. Ayers and Obama live in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood.

Ayers and Obama served together on the board of the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based charity that develops community groups to help the poor. Obama left the board in December 2002.

American Issues Project, the sponsor of the ad, is a nonprofit 501(c)4 organization. One of its board members, Ed Failor Jr., was a paid consultant for McCain's campaign in Iowa last year. Barack Obama has been deeply involved with the entire Ayers clan--proud terrorist Bill, brother John, lefist lawyer dad Thomas--since 1987.

That's 21 years.

That's as long or longer than he's been with the Black Panther-inspired teachings of Black Liberation Theology screamed weekly from the pulpit of AIDS conspiracy-monger Jeremiah Wright.

That's as long or longer than he's called lynching advocate Michael Fleger his mentor and friend.

Here are the two posts that came before and after my 10:43:48 comment that was deleted by an ABC News employee, as if it never appeared at all.

While the University sits on the complete Annenberg Challenge records, several months ago I was able to obtain certain key records of the Challenge - including board minutes, annual and semi-annual reports and financial records - from Brown University's Annenberg Institute. Brown housed the national Annenberg Challenge program that was set up in 1993 by a gift of $500 million from Walter Annenberg.

While the material I was provided is helpful it is no substitute for the complete documentary record that is apparently housed at the University of Illinois and thus that public University should immediately make available to the public those records.
Below is an analysis of what I found in the documents I was able to obtain.

Subjected to a rootless upbringing by a self-absorbed, radical leftist mother, and abandoned by a self-absorbed, hard-drinking philandering father, he sought refuge, meaning and personal grounding in drugs and in the hateful words and destructive ideologies of men like Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger and William Ayers.

What are the odds that the Times's Nicholas Kristof will release the tape recording of that Obama interview so that language experts can determine whether or not Obama's Arabic accent is indeed "first rate?"

He calls himself a "citizen of the world," even though there is no country called "The World."
