A bear killed two militants after discovering them in its den in Indian-administered Kashmir, police say.

Two other militants escaped, one of them badly wounded, after the attack in Kulgam district, south of Srinagar.

The militants had assault rifles but were taken by surprise - police found the remains of pudding they had made to eat when the bear attacked.

It is thought to be the first such incident since Muslim separatists took up arms against Indian rule in 1989.

The militants had made their hideout in a cave which was actually the bear's den, said police officer Farooq Ahmed.

News of the attack emerged when their injured comrade went to a nearby village for treatment.

Wildlife experts say the conflict in Kashmir has actually resulted in an increase in the population of bears and leopards.

Following the outbreak of the insurgency people had to hand in their weapons to police - which put a halt to poaching.

Baldrick with a fellow rescue hedgehog at the centre

A bald hedgehog abandoned by his mother in a garden in Norfolk is being treated at a wildlife rescue centre in a bid to encourage his spikes to grow.

Baldrick, named after the character from the television programme Blackadder, was brought to Foxy Lodge wildlife rescue centre, Great Yarmouth.

He is now being cared for by Tonia and John Garner in the hope he can be eventually released into the wild.

Treatment includes antiseptic scrubs and baby oil massages.

Mr Garner told the BBC News website that Baldrick was spotted in a garden being pushed along by its mother.

He said: "They are not very good parents in the wild and if they have a family of six babies, about two will never make it."

Baldrick's mother eventually took her other babies away, abandoning her bald son who ended up at the wildlife centre.

Mr Garner said when Baldrick was brought in in August aged about six weeks he weighed 240g, but is now up to about 800g.

Wildlife officer loses alligator in school

A US wildlife officer's decision to bring a 5ft alligator into his daughter's school for a show-and-tell backfired when it escaped.

Dave Brady had recently captured the reptile and thought he'd bring it into his daughters class, with its mouth taped shut, in Florida.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Stan Kirkland said it proved a hit with the class: "They were impressed," he said.

Things started to go wrong when Mr Brady loaded the alligator back into his truck after the school visit in Panama City Beach.

"Most people don't think they can jump, but they have an amazing ability to jump," Mr Kirkland said. "They can not only jump, they can run."

The alligator successfully jumped out of the truck and ran off towards a local pond where it has so far managed to avoid recapture.

Mr Kirkland asked people to keep an eye out for the alligator: "It's green, it's 5ft long and it was last seen on the lam," he added.
