Wombat droppings used by an Australian paper manufacturer boost the economy

Here's the brightest story to emerge from the credit crunch, so far. Extraordinary as it may seem, wombat droppings – yes wombat droppings - are helping an industrial city in Australia fight the economic downturn.

Round upon round of job cuts have blighted the city of Burnie, in the north-west of the state of Tasmania. But one local industry is fighting back by producing handmade paper out of wombat poo.

Tourists have been keen to snap up the novelty paper as a unique souvenir of Australia – and the wombat, a furry marsupial which lives in the wild. Wombats' diets are loaded with plant fibre which make their faeces ideal for making the paper.

Manufacturer Creative Paper says it can be unpleasant – but for the delighted visitors, it's clearly worth it. All the paper is made from the dung of a single animal called Nugget.

The Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security recently hosted a teleconference for law enforcement agencies and associations such as the National Association of Chiefs of Police to discuss the Obama Administration's interest in using the military during "emergencies."

W. Craig Fugate met with the Commander, US Northern Command, General Gene Renuart, to discuss "pre-disaster planning, response and recovery in support of the federal response to the 2009 hurricane season as well as wild fires, floods and other potential disasters."

However, many law enforcement executives and organizations went on the record saying they did not appreciate the prospect of federal troops usurping the authority of local and state law enforcement agencies or the role of the National Guard unit currently under the control of governors.

This meeting was an important stepping stone to ensure mutual preparedness and effective planning in support of state and local officials

July 3, 2009 | It wasn't surprising when, after seven months of legal wrangling, the Minnesota Supreme Court declared that Al Franken had won the 2008 Senate race against incumbent Norm Coleman. Still less surprising (although vastly more entertaining) was the simultaneous breakdown of nearly all of Franken's adversaries on the right, whose regurgitated insults, whining complaints and exploding noggins revealed nothing about him or his victory -- and everything about them.

Upon learning that Franken had prevailed in a unanimous decision by his home state's highest court, the usual suspects on Fox News Channel and in the Limbaugh wasteland of radio immediately threw up a barrage of furious invective. Wasting no time on gracious concessions, they concentrated on two themes. First: Franken himself is wild, spiteful, menacing, bigoted and, most of all, deranged (as must be anyone who voted for him).

Climate change shrinks sheep

Climate change is causing a breed of wild sheep in Scotland to shrink, according to researchers.

Scientists say milder winters are helping smaller sheep to survive, reports the BBC.

Researchers first began studying Soay sheep, on the island of Hirta in the St Kilda archipelago, in 1985.

Since then, the sheep have decreased in size by 5% - their legs getting steadily shorter and their body weight decreasing.

Lead researcher Tim Coulson, from Imperial College London, said: "The island is almost like a natural laboratory - there are only the sheep and the vegetation there.

"In the past, only the big, healthy sheep and large lambs that had piled on weight in their first summer could survive the harsh winters on Hirta."

But because of climate change, grass for food was now available for more months of the year on the island.

Until last week, U.S. trophy hunters had the legal right to hunt three species of endangered African game at American ranches, thanks to a “blanket exemption” to the Endangered Species Act issued during the Bush administration.

That loophole has now been closed, following a federal judge’s ruling in a lawsuit brought by the organization Friends of Animals, based on Darien, Conn.

The ruling protects U.S.-bred scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), addax (Addax nasomaculatus), and dama gazelles (Nanger dama), all of which are critically endangered in their African homelands, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Until now, American sport hunters could pay $3,500 to hunt and kill a scimitar-horned oryx—and even more for an addax or dama gazelle—and keep the carcasses as trophies. International travel to accomplish the same task has long been banned by the Endangered Species Act and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna
