If you take Wikipedia as a kind of unit, all of Wikipedia, the whole project—every page, every edit, every line of code, in every language Wikipedia exists in—that represents something like the cumulation of 98 million hours of human thought. I worked this out with Martin Wattenberg at IBM; it's a back-of-the-envelope calculation, but it's the right order of magnitude, about 98 million hours of thought.

And television watching? Two hundred billion hours, in the U.S. alone, every year. Put another way, now that we have a unit, that's 2,000 Wikipedia projects a year spent watching television. Or put still another way, in the U.S., we spend 98 million hours every weekend, just watching the ads. This is a pretty big surplus.

One thing is quickly obvious -- a section heading for a whole year has disappeared:

Joe Biden thought that John McCain would be perfectly qualified to be Veep on the Democratic ticket in 2004, and thus fit to serve as President if something should happen to John Kerry, his party's nominee.

Now we get to hear Joe Biden tell us why John McCain shouldn't be president.

clipper's remarks: You heard it here last folks. The text was sent pretty late, so I was long gone into dreamland. I woke up, turned on CNN, and caught the news. It wasn't much of a shock.

Good choice, bad choice? Dunno. He could've done much worse and I don't think anyone in the running would be any better. There really wasn't a hit it out of the park choice available. Radical Clintonistas won't be happy, but at this point there are about 10 of them.

Biden's Wikipedia bio is here. Obama got a lot of coverage out of his text message VP story -- which, let's face it, was a gimmick. But it was a very successful gimmick that sucked up all the oxygen in the newsroom for the past few days. Score one for Obama in the media war.

The good news for me is that this frees up one of my dream cabinet members -- Bill Richardson for Secretary of State. Now, if we can just get people to start talking about Attorney General Russ Feingold, I'll be happy as a god

Text on Obama's website provides the first official description of what Obama sees in Sen. Biden:

Barack has chosen Joe Biden to be his running mate. Joe Biden brings extensive foreign policy experience, an impressive record of collaborating across party lines, and a direct approach to getting the job done.

And I think the campaign kept its promise. Supporters who went to bed before midnight ET will wake up and check their cell phones...presumably before they flip on the TV.

De Gaume of Gaumestreek is het Franstalige deel van Belgisch-Lotharingen op de grens met Frankrijk ten zuiden van de Ardennen en wordt niet meer daartoe gerekend. In België valt de streek grotendeels samen met het arrondissement Virton. Het wordt aan de Noordkant begrensd door de Rulles en in het Oosten door de taalgrens met het Land van Aarlen.

Historisch gezien hoort ook de streek rond Montmédy, in 1659 afgestaan door Spanje aan Frankrijk in de Vrede van de Pyreneeën, bij de Gaume. Daarom is de Zuidgrens van de streek niet gelijk aan de grens met Frankrijk. Het Franse deel van de Gaume omvat het Kanton Montmédy en delen van het Kanton Damvillers.

Virton is de hoofdplaats van deze streek.
