Like many people, Gina Uberti wanted to take time off from work for a religious holiday.

Unlike most Connecticut workers, her religion is Wicca, the largest of the neo-pagan, earth-based faiths. Wiccans worship multiple deities, use magic in their rituals, adhere to a basic code of morality, and hold four major seasonally based festivals.

Uberti attended one of those festivals last October. A dispute with a supervisor over that vacation has led to an unusual federal lawsuit.

Jarad M. Lucan, who practices employment law at Durant, Nichols, Houston, Hodgson, & Cortese-Costa in Bridgeport, is not involved with the case. But he said it should send a message to employers that, no matter how common or obscure the religion, if a worker sincerely believes it to be their religion, then employers must reasonably accommodate them under the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“You have to try to accommodate a sincerely held religious belief,”

For the most part, I can make the analogy to other media and decide that, if we are not willing to eliminate books and libraries because they may contain "dangerous" ideas, why would we attempt to keep young people from the internet and the world wide web? Obviously, however, we do attempt to "protect" young people from much that is available in traditional print media, and various types of filtering software are now available to "protect" young people in the electronic world as well.

Ironically, some of the most powerful and positive learning sites (according to my value system, of course) are filtered out using such software. For example, CyberPatrol blocks access to the Ontario Religious Tolerance Site because it includes Wicca among its 62 religious and ethical systems. This site also includes information of abortion, cults, the death penalty, and satanism.

A Lancashire town has put up its Christmas lights - 127 days before Christmas.

Rochdale Council say the lights in Milnrow will be used in celebrations for several faiths - starting with the Muslim festival of Eid on September 20, reports The Sun.Other holy days include the Hindu festival of Diwali in October, the Jewish holiday of Hannukah in December - and even the Wicca festival Yule celebrated by white witches and pagans on the winter solstice.But the town's decorations are traditional Christmas symbols including a giant Noel sign, Santa Claus, and even a penguin on skis.

Student Tom Whitaker, 19, said: "It's absolutely ludicrous. It's the height of summer and they're putting up Christmas lights."Café owner Vicky Mannion, 38, said: "I nearly died from shock. It's four months away and I have more pressing concerns - like keeping my café going."

Wife claims abusive husband practices Wicca

A Williamston man whose wife said he is a male-witch faces six counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of unlawful neglect of a child.

The investigation began, he said, when Christine Starnes, the suspect’s wife, filed a police complaint alleging acts of cruelty against a child.

According to the police report, “the complainant stated that her husband is deeply involved in the witchcraft of Wiccaism and she is concerned that he is using her and the children without them knowing or their consent.”

Wiccan's discrimination complaint rejected

B.C.'s Human Rights Tribunal has dismissed a Wiccan woman's complaint that Vancouver's Langara College discriminated against her in expelling her from an "energy healing" program.

Sally Wild enrolled in the college's Centre for Holistic Studies in 2006, and at that time reported she had been a member of Wicca for 10 years, according to tribunal documents.

Wild alleged in her complaint to the tribunal that a Langara instructor said to her during a February 2007 school retreat: "We don't burn witches, we just kick them out of programs."

In an affidavit submitted to the tribunal, Soo said he investigated Wild's complaint and decided to remove her from the program in early May 2007 after learning of Wild's alleged loud behaviour and comments that she would harm herself if her boyfriend were not in her life.

She later elaborated as part of her complaint that she was mistreated because of her hereditary gifts of intuitive power and perception.

Discrimination Against Wiccan Military Chaplains

The purpose of military chaplains, as stated by the Air Force Chaplain Corps and echoed among the other branches of the U.S. Military, is to “offer a broadly based ministry aimed at meeting the diverse pastoral needs of the pluralistic military community.” They are told to abide by the First Amendment by supporting the free exercise of religion, both directly and indirectly, for all members of the Military Services, their dependents, and other authorized persons.

The 22 February 2006 bombing of the Golden Mosque in Samarra, Iraq, which collapsed the dome of a 1,200-year-old holy site and triggered attacks between Shiite and Sunni militants, prompted Larsen to make a decision – and a change of heart – regarding his own personal faith.

Pagan PC: I Don't Want Tree Worshippers Standing Between Me And Chaos

Be afraid, be very afraid. Pagan police officers have been given the right to take eight days off work a year to celebrate "religious holidays" like Hallowe'en and the summer solstice. A Pagan Police Association has been set up to represent officers who worship nature and the cult of Wicca.

While it is arguably marvellous that society has progressed to the point where we recognise any old set of beliefs as a religion, I do feel a certain exception should be made for the police.

There is something uniquely worrying about the boys in blue going Awol on a mission of spiritual discovery. I cannot be the only one who does not feel safe in the knowledge that my local coppers are "balancing operational needs" with chanting and meditation.

The fact is – and call me Mrs Unadventurous – I don't want a load of tree worshippers standing between me and the local thugs who want to smash my door down.

Pagans in the Military

For many people, especially those outside of Paganism, there is a lingering belief that all Pagans are tree-hugging, pacifist and sometimes militantly anti-military. While this stereotype may fit some, the contrary is also true. There are Pagans who not only support the armed forces but are active members as well as veterans. And believe it or not, some of them are tree huggers too.

Pagans in the military deserve every right their mainstream counterparts have, not just rights afforded to them after they have died. Wicca is now recognized in the Military Chaplain's Handbook, but there is still a lot of headway to be made. Pagan soldiers who want to practice their religion may experience anything from ignorance to outright discrimination.

t's hard to completely erase prejudice, but Pagans can work within the law to have their rights recognized. Every small victory for military Pagans becomes part of the larger victory to help assure freedoms these soldiers are fighting for.

Hans Holzer 1920 - 2009

Famed ghost-hunter, paranormal investigator, and popularizer of Pagan faiths Hans Holzer passed away on Sunday at the age of 89. While most will remember him for his ghost-hunting and investigations into the Amityville house (the subject of several films), he also played a key role in the spread of Witchcraft/Wicca and other Pagan faiths in America during the 1970s. With books like “The New Pagans”, “The Truth About Witchcraft”, and “Confessions of a Witch”, Holzer responded to a need that the still nascent Pagan publishing industry couldn’t fill.

While many modern Pagans barely know Holzer outside of his books on paranormal phenomena, he played a key role in making Wicca/Witchcraft the world religion it is today.

Holzer also cleared a path in the publishing world that eventually allowed Pagan authors like Margot Adler to write serious examinations of what we now call the “Pagan community”.

Wiccan turned Christian gets a new start

Tim Hovey said he knew that the whole town of Duxbury thought of he and his wife the Rev. Kendra Vaughan Hovey as “the witches” for their involvement with the town’s First Church of Wicca.

Kendra, in fact, practiced Wicca for 30 years and was a high priestess for 20.

“Wicca did a lot for me,” she said. “It really helped me grow in my spirituality and learn about human nature. It just wasn’t enough for me.”

Therefore, Kendra has turned to Christianity, so much so that First Church is being converted to Living Waters Community of Hope, a Christian ministry that opens Sunday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m.

“This wasn’t an overnight process for me,” she said. “This is a process that took three years.”

“It’s left up to each individual to decide what’s good and bad,” she said. “It’s a real live-and-let-live kind of attitude. There’s really no one to be held accountable to.”

Kendra was baptized as a Christian on her 41st birthday, Aug. 31, 2008.

This is a website about the people behind the resurgence of interest in modern day Witchcraft. Gerald Gardner (left), who is often considered to be the Father of Modern Day Witchcraft, would refer to its early members as being of 'The Wica' - hence the name of this site.

Here you can find brief bios, old documents, newspaper clippings, photos, pictures and the odd mp3 which all help to fill in the pieces of the historical jigsaw of what is probably the only religion that Britain has given to the world - Witchcraft!

Rebuttal reflects Wiccan-Christian tensions

As the semester draws to a close at the University of Texas, my Journalism & Religion students and I enter our last section: Wicca and atheism. Don’t ask how or why those two got paired. Maybe because I thought it would be interesting to talk about how despised both groups are?

But clearly tensions between Christians and Wiccans remain, as evidenced by this On Faith column by the Wiccan leader Starhawk. (Hat tip:Tom Davis)

It’s more than time that the Catholic and Protestant Churches both apologized for centuries of persecution of Witches, Pagans and those they deemed ‘heretics’ for believing something different than standard dogma. How about an apology for the Papal Bull of Pope Innocent the Eighth, in 1484, that made Witchcraft an heresy and unleashed the Inquisition against traditional healers, midwives, and any woman unpopular with her neighbors for being too uppity?
