Le Blackberry Storm 9500 est un appareil 3G+ (GPRS, EDGE, WAP, HSDPA) qui dispose d’un format peu courant chez le constructeur avec des dimensions de 112,5 x 62,2 x 13,9mm intégrant un grand écran LCD tactile de 3,3 pouces permettant un affichage 65 536 couleurs dans une résolution 360 x 480 pixels.

En plus des fonctions de gestion de contacts, messagerie et agenda habituelles aux Blackberry, on retrouve pour le multimédia lecteur audio et vidéo, une fonction dictaphone et un appareil photo numérique de 3,2 Megapixels, le tout agrémenté d’une prise audio 3,5mm et d’une mémoire de 1 Go extensible. Un professeur de l'université de Sao Paulo a mis au point, avec ses étudiants, un point d'accès WiFi entièrement autonome, alimenté uniquement à l'énergie solaire. Pour la liaison à internet, le point d'accès est intégré dans un réseau de type Mesh (ou maillé), où chaque point d'accès est relié à un autre par les ondes, jusqu'à un accès réseau via une ligne téléphonique.

假如波士顿大学的研究人员没忽悠我们的话，未来的灯泡将不仅仅是用来发光发热，还能够用来发送数据数据，当作无线网络使用。

这群研究团队以低功率 LED 组装出一套无线光学传输系统，透过超高频率快速地开关 LED，便能够在一般人不会察觉到的情况下，将数据参杂在光线中传送出去。目前这套系统单一 LED 的传输速率为 1 ~ 10 Mbps，虽然看起来并不比现行的 WiFi 来的快速，但这套「光网络」还有其它优于以无线电波为基础的无线网络的地方。比如说这套系统必须在光线能够直接照射到的地方才能接收讯息，因此外人不容易窃听，也具有较高的安全性。而光网络所消耗的电量也比传统无线网络低上许多，正中目前节能减碳的风潮。

「想想看，未来不论是个人电脑、电视、甚至 iPhone，只要随手一开电灯就能接上网络，再也不必被那些讨厌的线材纠缠」，波士顿大学的小汤玛士( Thomas Little，听起来好像火车的名字喔 )教授为这套系统做了这样的脚注。倘若这项技术成真的话，确实也是如此。唯二的缺点就只是这套系统看起来似乎只具有单向传输的能力( 没看到反向传送机制的说明，是眼花了吗？ )。以及，它剥夺了我们有时就是想要摸黑上网的权力呀！

Fring VOIP and chat client goes mainstream

The iPhone app Fring, which acts as a VOIP client for Skype and other internet phone networks, as well as a voice and chat interface into IM networks like AIM and Yahoo, is now available for free to everyone. Previously it only ran on Jailbroken iPhones, severely limiting its audience.

On the iPhone, Fring can read both your IM and Skype buddy lists as well as the contacts in your phone's address book, and when you select a contact, you get the option of calling him or her by SIP call, Skype, or standard cellular. VOIP calls obviously don't count against your cellular minutes, but you do need to have a WiFi connection to make the calls.

New millimeter-wave technology sends data at 10 gigabits per second.

There's no shortage of demand for faster wireless, but today's fastest technologies--Wi-Fi, 3G cellular networks, and even the upcoming WiMax--max out at tens or hundreds of megabits per second. So far, no commercial wireless system can beat the raw speed of optical fiber, which can carry tens of gigabits per second.

One way to achieve faster speeds is to harness the millimeter-wavelength frequency of the wireless spectrum, although this usually requires expensive and very complex equipment. Now, engineers at Battelle, a research and development firm based in Columbus, OH, have come up with a simpler way to send data through the air with millimeter-wave technology. Earlier this year, in field tests of a prototype point-to-point system, the team was able to send a 10.6-gigabit-per-second signal between antennas 800 meters apart. And more recently, the researchers demonstrated a 20-gigabit-per-second signal in the lab.

Another innovative use for RFID, developed jointly by GeoDecisions, Lockheed Martin, and SAVR Communications, will go on sale this fall for the transportation sector. The new service will enable truckers to get up-to-the-minute alerts about weather and traffic events so they can re-route shipments and avoid bottlenecks. The service, using technology developed for the Defense Department, marries RFID systems and geo-positioning technology to make it easier for trucking companies to warn customers about delays. "Instead of you staring at a screen, this system alerts you when you are not at a screen," said Jonathan Pollack, senior vice president at GeoDecisions, which provides transportation logistics and other services.

The iPhone is already in its second generation and Apple is now ranked in 3rd place in the smartphone market while Nokia hasn’t even made a competing phone. Well all of that is due to change as Nokia is set to release the touchscreen Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone. The phone could be released as soon as October 2nd of this year.

It has some strong features to pit against the Apple iPhone including a 640×360 display and a 3.2 Megapixel camera with video capability, both of which are better than whats available on the iPhone 3G. The 5800 will also include 3G, GPS and WiFi.

Nokia is also planning on pricing it very competitively, at a lower price than the iPhone 3G.

We've been covering the new Xperia X1 from Sony Ericsson quite a bit recently. Following the photo special and the appearance on Vodafone we were certainly impressed with the rather massive advertising campaign and "Johnny X" films.

The X1, as you may already know, has an 800 x 480 pixel screen, WiFi, 3G + HSDPA, microSD expansion, 3 megapixel camera, GPS, FM radio with RDS and that cool slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

The guys from Sony Ericsson wanted to show off their latest Johnny X videos along with the ones you may have missed with the help of this little widget on the right. "Sure", you might say, "but that's just an advert for their product isn't it?", Well yes, but the great bit about it is the chance to WIN a brand new Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 handset just by identifying bits from the Johnny X videos.
