Featuring four revolutionary electric wheels, the standard BMW Mini One you can see on Stand 270 is predicted to have a top speed approaching 150mph and to out-accelerate a Porsche 911 Carrera from 0-60mph. Brake horsepower is a stunning 160bhp per wheel - 640bhp in total.

The car, dubbed the Mini QED, has been designed to run for four hours of combined urban/extra urban driving, powered only by a battery and bank of ultra capacitors. It's called the ReCharge, a concept car from Volvo to be unveiled officially next week at the Frankfurt Auto Show, it's a plug-in hybrid with a battery-only range of 100 km before you need to have the car's four-cylinder 1.6-liter Flexfuel engine kick in to power the car and recharge the battery. The ReCharge is built off a specially designed Volvo C30, meaning it's got a platform that doesn't need to be built from scratch -- boosting the possibility we could see something like it really hit the streets. The best news would be for the environment which would see "about 66% lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today."

Four electric motors, one at each wheel, provide independent traction power.
The Lightning car company is proud to release one of the UK's first electric sports cars for 2007.

Combining classic, British sports car design
with racing car technology and state of the art NanoSafe™ battery power and Hi-Pa Drive™ electric
motor innovation, the Lightning has been developed with exhilarating performance front of mind. Whilst its head-turning looks will appeal to the
most discerning of drivers, unlike other sports cars, the Lightning is also easy on the conscience. With virtually no polluting emissions, this energy-efficient
car uses clean technology and will have the ultimate green
rating. Following production of several Lightning petrol prototypes, the electric Lightning
GT, sports and extended range versions are now available to pre-order.

Although they appear to offer several vehicle-control advantages for little more than the cost of a line of computer code, the main reason they haven't succeeded is their weight, particularly for a car's steered wheels; even the highly advanced units proposed for Mitsubishi's i concept were dropped in favour of a single engine, transmission and driveshafts when it came to production. Nevertheless, PML claims its motor, for which there are a number of patents pending, offers a power-to-weight ratio 10 times better than anything before.
