Mitsubishi Unveils One Electric and Two Diesel Concept Cars at Tokyo Motor Show

Effective use of energy is achieved by installing an auxiliary photovoltaic generator on the roof,

The two in-wheel motors produce 20 kW of output and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque each; the rear motor, 47 kW of power and 180 Nm (133 lb-ft) of torque. Maximum speed is 180 km/h (112 mph), and the vehicle has a range of 200km (124 miles) in the 10-15 cycle.

PML Builds 640hp Electric MINI

While all the world's most famous motoring names look on, a British company, PML, has chosen the UK's most prestigious motor show as the venue to strip away all the misconceptions surrounding electric/hybrid vehicles and to showcase a truly awesome car. Featuring four revolutionary electric wheels, the standard BMW Mini One you can see on Stand 270 is predicted to have a top speed approaching 150mph and to out-accelerate a Porsche 911 Carrera from 0-60mph. Brake horsepower is a stunning 160bhp per wheel - 640bhp in total.

The car, dubbed the Mini QED, has been designed to run for four hours of combined urban/extra urban driving, powered only by a battery and bank of ultra capacitors. For longer journeys at higher speeds, a small conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) is used to re-charge the battery. In this hybrid mode, fuel economies of up to 80mpg can be achieved.

Volvo ReCharge Concept.

It's called the ReCharge, a concept car from Volvo to be unveiled officially next week at the Frankfurt Auto Show, it's a plug-in hybrid with a battery-only range of 100 km before you need to have the car's four-cylinder 1.6-liter Flexfuel engine kick in to power the car and recharge the battery. The ReCharge is built off a specially designed Volvo C30, meaning it's got a platform that doesn't need to be built from scratch -- boosting the possibility we could see something like it really hit the streets. The best news would be for the environment which would see "about 66% lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today."

Four electric motors, one at each wheel, provide independent traction power. Four-cylinder 1.6-litre Flexifuel engine drives an advanced generator that efficiently powers the wheel motors when the battery is depleted

LIGHTNING STRIKE

The Lightning Car Company GT is powered by four, hub mounted electric motors claimed to produce at least 700bhp in total. Each motor has a maximum torque rating at the wheel of 553lb ft, available virtually from zero rpm.

Their life expectancy is up to 12 years, versus the three-five year life of other batteries, and they can retain up to 85% charge capacity after 15,000 charges. With instantaneous power even at extreme temperatures, NanoSafe batteries claim to deliver power per unit weight and unit volume several times that of conventional Lithium-Ion batteries.

GT is powered by 4 electric motors

Hi-Pa Drive integrates the motor and drive electronics in one single unit. It claims to produce an ultra high power density - up to 20 times more than conventional systems.

Over 700bhp is claimed

Interiors finished to order

Not much word on prices yet, but expect a top of the range GTSE to cost circa £150,000.

Mark Hales looks at the development of a new electric sports car that uses world-leading battery technology

The car is the electric Lightning and the world-leading technology is a combination of wheel-mounted electric motors and, more importantly, the Nano-Titanate batteries that power them.

We have written about wheel motors in these pages before. Although they appear to offer several vehicle-control advantages for little more than the cost of a line of computer code, the main reason they haven't succeeded is their weight, particularly for a car's steered wheels; even the highly advanced units proposed for Mitsubishi's i concept were dropped in favour of a single engine, transmission and driveshafts when it came to production. Nevertheless, PML claims its motor, for which there are a number of patents pending, offers a power-to-weight ratio 10 times better than anything before. PML's Martin Boughtwood
