Penguin's wetsuit puts him back in the swim of things

Pierre, a venerable 25 years old jackass penguin, was going bald, which left him with an embarrassingly exposed, pale pink behind.

Unlike marine mammals, which have a layer of blubber to keep them warm, penguins rely on their waterproof feathers. Without them, Pierre was unwilling to plunge into the California Academy of Sciences penguin tank and ended up shivering on the sidelines while his 19 peers played in the water.

Staff at Oceanic Worldwide, a supplier of dive gear based in San Leandro, were enthusiastic about making a real penguin suit for Pierre.

Pierre was outfitted with the suit about six weeks ago. Since then, he has gained weight, grown back feathers on his hind parts and is again acting like his feisty, alpha-male self. With his plumage restored, Pierre is being weaned off the suit, taking more and more dips in the buff.

A chihuahua in a scuba suit has won a canine fashion show in the Philippines.

Five-year-old Mondex wore a four-legged wetsuit, air bottle, four little flippers and goggles for the day.

Mondex was joined by other pampered pooches in the pet fashion show held in a mall in suburban Manila.

He faced stiff competition from Tucker, another five-year-old chihuahua, who was dressed as a cowboy but eventually emerged victorious.

Rumours that he is now set to pursue a career as a police frog-dog are understood to be wide of the mark.

The shadowy flippered figure gliding through the water with more than 30 tiger sharks off the coast of South Africa is 67-year-old Wolfgang Leander.

Swimming with sharks is his hobby.

It has led to surprisingly few mishaps, though nonetheless there's something unnerving about the way this steely-eyed pensioner describes a potentially fatal encounter he had with a hungry Caribbean Reef Shark that was drawn to him by the scent of the fish he had just speared.

"Every time the shark wanted to get the fish, I veered the spear away," explains Leander, as if he is talking about teasing a kitten, not taunting a 5ft, sharp-toothed predator.

"After I did this three times, the shark got quite mad and bit me in the left forearm, just once but rather angrily."

clipper's remarks: I've been on both sides of this--at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island ($500/night even back then!) in Hawaii--where there is a similar law of public access. As a security guard, I would ignore calls of "suspects" on the beach unless they were causing a ruckus...like the time I got a late night call about noise and discovered a drunken off-duty Secret Service agent doing a noisy "horizontal bop" with their groupie call girl after midnight--a BIG hilarious no-no! "Bad, bad Secret Service man, You s'posed ta be resting to guard VP Ford tomorrow!", says I. This was in '74.
Anyway, later as a citizen, I would go body surfing there when the waves were good and ignore the security guards (after they fired my whole crew because they found the pakalolo, you know, wacky grass, growing on the golf course). Would-be bodysurfer sues to establish a beachhead at Stinson

The white sand radiated in the brilliant August sunshine at Stinson Beach, where Douglas Rigg had just laid down a towel and pulled his wetsuit out of a backpack.

The 43-year-old Mill Valley architect was looking forward to a day of reading, relaxing and taking an occasional swim, so he was upset when a security guard hired by local homeowners ordered him to leave.

It turns out the property owners at Seadrift, a 1.5-mile-long spit on the north end of Stinson Beach, don't like picnickers or sunbathers sullying what they consider their sand.

Rigg sued the Seadrift Homeowners Association, accusing it of unlawfully banning the public. The dispute, which could end up in Marin County Superior Court early next year, has revived an ugly battle that started half a century ago and has implications around the state.

"I was a little miffed," Rigg said. "I thought it was a public right to enjoy the beaches in California."

Horror films: The funny kind

Creature from the Haunted Sea

Creature from the Haunted Sea is a half-serious, half-slapstick crime-castaway-monster movie with rampant Bogart parody and a pathetically homemade monster.

The setting is the Caribbean, just after the Cuban Revolution. Several former Cuban military officers abscond with a strongbox from the Cuban treasury, and hire a Sicilian-American mafioso's boat for their getaway. The mobster and his moll decide to scuttle the boat, blame the Cubans' deaths on a sea monster, and keep the money. All goes well until the real sea monster gets in on the scheme.

Roger Corman (Little Shop of Horrors) filmed Creature in five days, augmenting it with spare footage and dialogue from a different film. Boy, does it show.

And the Creature itself looks like Cookie Monster's senile great-uncle, made from:

a wetsuit, some moss, lots of Brillo pads.... Tennis balls for the eyes, Ping-Pong balls for the pupils and pipecleaners for the claws.

Not everyone there attempted to climb the falls as many were happy to just walk dry along the side on the stairs. We chose not to go with any of the groups which tend to go up the left side of the falls. We made our way up on our own mostly on the right side. With some breaks for photos, we made it all the way up the falls in about 30 minutes. Going with a group would have taken longer for sure. The water is a bit cool and if you have a wetsuit, it is highly suggested that you wear it for the climb. Cameras used there up the falls are also recommended to be water resistant since they likely will get wet. We left our digital camera on the ship and took one of those $25 underwater cameras.

It looks like at least someone will benefit from the global warming. Big wave surfing tow in team - Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala are heading to Alaska this summer to surf some big waves. They are heading all the way to the glaciers. I can hear you saying, surfing waves that break over solid ice...it's been done before. Hell, with the new heated wetsuit it will become an everyday thing. But what these guys are up to looks more like dynamite surfing to me.

SPAM and urinating in a public pool

I'm tired of hearing spammer's lame excuses and rationalizations. Spamming newsgroups can reasonably be compared to urinating in a public pool. But when spammers are caught, we hear stuff like:

"Uh-- I didn't know I wasn't supposed to piss in the pool. After all, its full of water -- just like my toilet at home."

"I'm sure there are some people here who really WANT to swim in my piss."

"After all, this is a free pool; I can piss here if I want to."

"If they don't want to swim in my piss, they should never use the pool!"

"I had to buy my bathing suit, so pissing in this pool IS costing me money! This isn't a free ride for pissers as some of you claim!"

"It is anti-American to restrict freedom of urination! Will you start censoring #2 after that?!?!?!"

"There are already big guys pissing in the pool. Why are you singling out the little guy? ...No... No, I CAN'T point out a big pisser..."

"Hi, my name is Jerry Reynolds, and MCI is letting me re-route a large sewer line into your pool. Have a nice swim."

"Our market research has indicated that you wanted us to piss in your pool."

We meet at the Paddy Pallin outdoor gear shop (76 Elizabeth Street, Hobart, Ph (03) 6231 0777) at 4.00pm of the day prior to departure, for the issuing of wetsuits, gearbags, help and advice in packing of the gear and checking the suitability of you gear. If you are unable to attend, we shall make alternative arrangements. Riverwear – swimwear, runners, wetsuit socks, thick woollen socks or thermal socks, thin thermal top, medium fibrepile/fleece top, lightweight sun hat for under helmet. Campwear – warm underwear, lightweight boots, 2x warm socks, sandals, shorts, long pants (cotton unsuitable), 2x T shirts, long-sleeved shirt, woollen jumper or fleece top, thermal or woolen balaclava/beanie, waterproof jacket (not padded/quilted). Other equipment – down sleeping bag (can be hired for $20), small towel (pref a pack towel), small torch (with spare bulb & batteries), sunglasses (with retaining strap), toiletries, sunscreen, personal medications, camera, small amount of money.

Boy Swims From Alcatraz to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO - A 7-year-old Arizona boy swam from Alcatraz Island to the city in 47 minutes Monday, where his father lifted him from the chilly waters.

Braxton Bilbrey was joined by his coach and two other adults for the estimated 1.4-mile swim. The second-grader was greeted at the finish by reporters, photographers and well-wishers.

"I think it's pretty cool," the wetsuit-clad boy said shortly after his father grabbed him under the arms and out of the water, which was in the mid-50s Monday.

Braxton said his next ambition is to swim the English Channel.

Stacey Bilbrey originally wasn't sold on the idea of her son swimming from Alcatraz, but she accepted it once he proved he was dedicated to his goal.

"For a 7-year-old to be that motivated and stick with a goal that long is amazing," she said.

Alcatraz, once a notorious federal prison that housed some of the nation's infamous criminals, including Chicago mobster Al Capone, is now a tourist site that attracts about 1 million visitors a year. It also draws a fair share of swimmers who attempt the crossing as part of the annual Escape from Alcatraz triathlon.

Braxton, who lives in Glendale, Ariz., got the idea when he saw a magazine story about a 9-year-old boy who made the swim. Johnny Wilson, a fourth grader from Hillsborough completed the swim in 53-degree waters last October.

Coach Joe Zemaitis said Braxton, who has completed several short-scale youth triathlons, planned to rest up after his swim.

"He did great," said his dad, Steve Bilbrey. "He looked so strong. He did so awesome. I'm so proud of him."
