Second Life - Here's Who Is To Blame...

Have you been watching the Second Life and Virtual World backlash lately? I find it all a little funny. You have Disney scooping up Club Penguin for lots of millions, newly-formed agencies cutting major Brand gigs and deals with some of the largest advertising networks, and the number of participants who are aware of Virtual Worlds (or even have their own Avatars) seems to be climbing too.

Maybe it's not as hot as it was a couple of months ago. Maybe the PR play has dulled because all of the "firsts" in Virtual Worlds have been gobbled up by the mainstream media.

I think there is a clear blame on why virtual worlds and, more specifically, Second Life is failing to meet expectations.

Technology is to blame for the lack of Second Life lustre.

So if the Internet connection, the hardware and the overall usability remain this complex, it can never be adopted by the masses.

Never heard of Webkinz? You will.

The site is the brainchild of Ganz, a Canadian toymaker with a popular line of plush pets. Two years ago Ganz created an online environment to entertain the owners of its stuffed animals and was quickly swept into the exploding world of virtual-reality gaming aimed at tweens, children between the ages of 8 and 12.

Ganz's Webkinz.com and a site called Club Penguin were early entries into this market, but they've been joined this year by the giants of tween marketing: Disney (Charts) and Nickelodeon (Charts).

One way Club Penguin gives kids control over their environment is by letting them "bank" points they win in games and convert those points to "money" that can be used to customize their igloos.

Another trick used by Club Penguin to keep kids hanging around is throwing themed "parties."

The latest craze to hit toyland is Webkinz World. Webkinz pets are stuffed animals that come with their own serial number. You buy the animal in the store and then use the serial number to access the Webkinz web site.

You adopt your pet and give it a name. Your pet is then given some basic items like a room, some food, a balloon and 2000 in Kinzcash, the money that you can use to buy things for your pet in Webkinz World. By playing educational games, you earn more Kinzcash and are able to make sure your pet has the food, clothing and the necessities that he/she needs.

Webkinz World also allows your pet to play with the pets of your friends. You can also chat with your friends in a safe online environment.

They are called Webkinz, huggable, plush toys with elaborate virtual lives that spotlight how children's play is changing, moving effortlessly between the real world and the Web. And in less than two years, they have become must-have items for tech-savvy 'tweeners.

Webkinz combines classic stuffed animals with popular online trends, such as social networking and instant messaging. Other toys and Web sites have made similar efforts. Remember the late-1990s craze of Tamagotchi, billed as the world's first digital pet? More recently, Neopets.com began manufacturing such plush toys as the "cybunny," which mirrored the virtual animals on its site. But Webkinz claims to be the first to marry the physical and the virtual from its inception.

Each stuffed animal comes with an identification number that gives children access to the Webkinz site ( http://www.webkinz.com/). There, owners discover their pets' online personas ("I'll let you in on a secret," reads the profile of a cocker spaniel. "I love fish sticks, and I've always wanted a bunny clown.") Children can buy clothes for their pets using virtual money, outfitting them in baggy jeans or pink tutus. They can also decorate their pets' virtual rooms with such items as a stove, a boy-band poster or a bed shaped like a pirate ship.
