Lemmon Observatory, the asteroid was calculated to enter the atmosphere over Sudan early on the morning of 7 October, erupting into a fireball in the sky but not damaging the ground. Although no sightings of the 2- to 3-meter-diameter rock burning itself up have come in from the ground, two other sorts of detections--one human and one instrumental--were made. Aviation meteorologist Jacob Kuiper of the National Weather Service in the Netherlands alerted KLM airliner pilots to the opportunity, and one flying 750 kilometers southwest of the predicted arrival spot reported a short flash just before the predicted time and in the predicted direction.

<clipSource>http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/2008/1008/1?etoc</clipSource>

Earliest Snowfall in Idaho Since 1898

clipped by: pkronfield
clipper's remarks: Grab your woolies, folks - another indication of Global Cooling. The snow caught many people off guard, including this bicyclist heading down Idaho Street between 8th and 9th around 5:45 p.m. Across the Treasure Valley, tree branches heavy with wet, snow-covered leaves fell on power lines, causing scattered power outages. This is the earliest measurable snowfall in Boise since recordkeeping began in 1898, according to the National Weather Service.

At 10 p.m., the Weather Service said 1.7 inches of snow had fallen. The previous earliest recorded snowfall was Oct. 12, 1969, when a little more than an inch fell. And if the snow wasn't enough, meteorologists say winds across southwestern Idaho will average 25 to 40 mph through Saturday afternoon, with gusts up to 55 mph. Sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected, which can make driving difficult.

Tags: global warming, loony left

<clipSource>http://www.idahostatesman.com/102/story/530075.html</clipSource>

THE CZECH REPUBLIC PHOTO GALLERY

clipped by: fredondo

Clip Source: www.wild-landscape.com

Otow Orchard is renowned for preserving the Japanese art of hoshigaki -- hoshi means dried and gaki is from kaki, the Japanese word for persimmon.

Our fresh persimmons are dried each fall in a slow, patient, hands-on process that usually takes three to six weeks...per persimmon. Each persimmon is hand-peeled, strung onto a rack, and massaged every 3 to 5 days for several weeks. Weather conditions are watched carefully. The result is a transformation into a sugary delicacy that is tender and moist with concentrated persimmon flavor.

Mike Dunne, Food Editor, Sacramento Bee, explains the process well in his article for The Sacramento Bee.

Tags: fruit, persimmons, produce, california, orchards

<clipSource>http://www.otoworchard.com/</clipSource>

Words, words, words

clipped by: sillysam
clipper's remarks: Time’s Karen Tumulty, who spotted racist goblins in the recent McCain ad criticizing Obama for seeking advice from Fannie Mae corruptocrat Franklin Raines.
A parade of congressional witch hunters for Obama also detects the specter of George Wallace behind every policy bush. Democratic New York Gov. David Paterson says conservative criticism of Obama’s community organizing days is code for “black.” Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks complained to the New York Observer: “They are trying to throw out these codes.” In the same piece, Democratic Rep. Yvette Clark divined segregationist intent in Palin’s references to Joe Six-Pack and hockey moms. “It leaves a lot of people out.”
And Democratic Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid echoed Time’s Tumulty on the McCain camp’s Obama/Raines broadsides: “The only connection that people could bring up about Raines and Barack Obama is that they both are African-American, other than that there is nothing.”

Clip Source: article.nationalreview.com

How many racial bogeymen have Obama operatives and sympathetic journalists discovered lurking in “coded language” and attire? “Given this economic environment, the winter will push some homeowners to the brink,” said AccuWeather long-range forecaster Joe Bastardi, referring to the credit crisis and oil prices which are substantially higher than last year.

Winter will start early this year, with December bringing perhaps the most severe weather of the season, Bastardi said. There should be a warm-up in January followed by another bout of severe weather in late January or early February, he said.

When I was a kid it would sometimes snow and always be cold by now. I'm typing this on my laptop sitting outdoors in the warm sun with no sweater or jacket on the downtown mall, a pedestrian street in Charlottesville, Va. Flowers are blooming, and butterflies and hummingbirds are hanging out, several states out of their old territory. We haven't had the heat or the air conditioning on in our house for months. The weather is perfect and we're saving money. Global warming is making it easy for us to take steps to reverse global warming. So why does the perfect summer breeze on the back of my neck scare the hell out of me?

Tags: politics

<clipSource>http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/17798</clipSource>

Can Electricity From Trees Power Gadgets?

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: My first thought was that the electricity may have some influence on the tree's life.

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

A new sensor system is under development that runs on electricity generated by ordinary trees! Apparently trees are capable of self-sustaining a reliable source of electricity. While a tree may not seem like much of a powerhouse, the "trickle charge" can add up, "just like a dripping faucet can fill a bucket over time," said Shuguang Zhang, one of the researchers on the project and the associate director of MIT's Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBE).

MIT researchers now believe they can power a network of sensors connected directly to trees to perform a variety of tasks.

Trees could serve as “silent sentinels” along the nation's borders to detect potential threats such as smuggled radioactive materials—with the sensors powered by the trees themselves. They could also prevent forest fires, among other applications, by sending early reports to the authorities.

Right now, the U.S. Forest Service says that manually recharging or replacing batteries in remote automated weather stations

Tags: nature, energy

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/10/researchers-say.html</clipSource>

weather hartford

clipped by: brianr262

Clip Source: www.weather.com
