Scientists to study synthetic telepathy

A team of UC Irvine scientists has been awarded a $4 million grant from the U.S. Army Research Office to study the neuroscientific and signal-processing foundations of synthetic telepathy.

The research could lead to a communication system that would benefit soldiers on the battlefield and paralysis and stroke patients, according to lead researcher Michael D’Zmura, chair of the UCI Department of Cognitive Sciences.

The brain-computer interface would use a noninvasive brain imaging technology like electroencephalography to let people communicate thoughts to each other. For example, a soldier would “think” a message to be transmitted and a computer-based speech recognition system would decode the EEG signals. The decoded thoughts, in essence translated brain waves, are transmitted using a system that points in the direction of the intended target.

Japan seems to have a knack for turning up weird deep-sea sharks. Last year, we wrote about a frilled shark that had wandered into shallow Japanese waters, offering us astonishing footage. Someone just sent me this video, which was also filmed in Japan last year:

The creature featured is a Mitsukurina owstoni, or goblin shark, which lives between 100 metres and 1000 metres beneath the waves. It gets its common name from the Japanese, who nicknamed it after their long-nosed supernatural creatures, the tengu.

The coolest thing about it is its Alien-like retractable jaw, which seems to leap out of its mouth to catch its prey - mostly teleost fish and squid, according to one of the few studies of the species published in Ichthyological Research in 2007.

US researchers have used gene therapy to regrow the tiny hairs in the inner ear of mice, which they say might lead to new ways of restoring hearing loss in humans.

Dr John Brigande and colleagues at Oregon Health and Science University report their findings in today's issue of Nature.

Sensory hair cells inside the cochlea, the auditory portion of the inner ear, convert sound waves into electrical impulses that are delivered to the brain.

The loss of these minute hairs, or the nerves that control them, is the most common cause of hearing impairment and so-called nerve deafness.

In most cases, damaged hair cells do not regrow in mature humans.

"Our work shows that it is possible to produce functional auditory hair cells in the mammalian cochlea.

I wish the best of luck to Sen. Joe Biden whom I personally consider to be a decent choice and a good candidate for the office. Bayh not the guy

WASHINGTON (WISH) - Senator Joe Biden beat out Indiana Senator Evan Bayh for Obama's VP nod. But the Hoosier legislator has a long and distinguished career in both local and national politics.

Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., waves as he is introduced by Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., before speaking before a panel discussion on national security at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

Through bloodlines, headlines, and party lines, Evan Bayh has long seemed fated to vie for the White House.

The campaigns of his father, Birch, put the younger Bayh in the presence of presidents.

"I would have been seven years old. I remember staying up past my bedtime on election night, which was a big deal those days," said Sen. Evan Bayh.

Birch Bayh served the state through three Senate terms and one formal attempt at the Oval Office. The elder's final big-stage effort was also his son's public introduction to the family business.

Official timekeeper Omega released a digital photo sequence of last week's riveting 100-meter butterfly finish at the Olympics - and it's still not clear to the naked eye just who won.

However, according to Omega timer Silvio Chianese, the results are clear.

"In the third set of images, with Phelps on the left, it is clear he is really pushing hard, while Cavic, on the right, is just arriving," Chianese told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Chianese explained that it requires 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of pressure to activate the touchpad.

"Any less and waves would set it off," Chianese said. "You can't just put your fingertips on the pad, you really have to push it. We explained all this directly after the race to (Cavic) and his coach."

The photos were taken by Omega cameras placed directly above the finish line, slightly angled to include two lanes in each photo.

Serbia coach Kapor Mladen filed an appeal but accepted the results after reviewing the photos immediately after the race.

So the recent events in Georgia involving Russian troops sent shock waves all the way down Chicago's Michigan Avenue to Obama headquarters. He decided to call in one of the Senate's top foreign policy experts to counter another of the Senate's top foreign policy experts.

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democrats' about-to-be presidential nominee, has chosen a fellow senator, Joe Biden of Delaware, as his about-to-be running mate for the Nov. 4 general election.

Two high-ranking Democratic Party officials have confirmed the choice of the veteran to The Times. Republican reaction is included at the end of this item.

The official announcement should come shortly, as promised, in an e-mail and text message dispatched to hundreds of thousands of Obama supporters around the world.

Biden, who's been a senator since Richard M. Nixon trounced George McGoven for reelection in 1972, was picked because of his long experience in foreign policy and national security affairs.

A tangle of spidery filaments stretches outward from the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1275 as if they were dendrites of an intergalactic nerve cell.

NGC 1275, located 235 million light-years from Earth near the center of a clump of galaxies known as the Perseus cluster, has posed a puzzle: How have these filaments, which are made of gas much cooler than the surrounding intergalactic cloud, persisted for perhaps 100 million years? Why haven’t they warmed, dissipated or collapsed to form stars?

reveal that the filaments, about 1,500 light-years wide and hundreds of thousands of light-years long, are themselves made of finer threads – smaller structures about 200 light-years wide and 20,000 light-years long. The cold gas is pushed out by waves of radiation emanating from the giant black hole at the center of the galaxy. Small is relative, of course. Each thread contains as much mass as one million Suns.

There are different slang terms for digital drugs. They're often called "idozers" or "idosers." All rely on the concept of binaural beats.

It is incorrect to call binaural beats music. They're really ambient sounds designed to affect your brain waves.

For binaural beats to work, you must use headphones. Different sounds are played in each ear. The sounds combine in your brain to create a new frequency. This frequency corresponds to brain wave frequencies.

There are different brain wave frequencies. These frequencies are related to different states like relaxation and alertness.
