The scent from the leaves of one coastal plant Xanthostemon, a kind of myrtle attracted them. They also found scents, such as the leaves from the Melaleuca Nervosa, a kind of paperbark which is another type of myrtle, that repelled them. They say this could have implications regarding tree planting and reforestation near marine habitats.

Clip Source: www.abc.net.au

Darren Osborne

The animated clownfish Nemo may have found his way home a lot sooner if he had trusted his nose

research by scientists from Australia, France and the US, has revealed that a species of clownfish (Amphiprion percula) uses its olfactory senses to help it locate a suitable habitat.

The findings appear in the latest edition of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Professor Geoff Jones of James Cook University, Townsville, says that although previous research has shown clownfish can smell, these new findings identify the scents they are using.

"We've actually narrowed down the chemical signals that they may be using to find their home."

Almost all exhibited a strong preference for water collected from reefs that contained islands.

The researchers then used water that contained the scent of an anemone or leaves from coastal plants such as Xanthostemon.

When given a choice between scented or unscented water the fish spent more than 90% of their time in the scented water.

<clipSource>http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2008/08/27/2347586.htm?site=science&topic=latest</clipSource>

recipe: Hibiscus Flower Margaritas

clipped by: Lexica
clipper's remarks: Jamaica is my favorite flavor of agua fresca, and margaritas are one of my favorite drinks. I fell into a bit of a rut with my first choice which was a hibiscus margarita. I drank two (or was it three?) of them. They smelled floral and sweet, but full of berries all at the same time. I got mine on ice as opposed to blended, and the color was a beautiful pomegranate shade which added to its irresistibility.

Hibiscus Flower Margarita Recipe

1 cup dried hibiscus flowers
1 cup sugar
4 cups water
1 cup+ tequila

Then I let it simmer for 10 or 15 minutes. Strained through cheesecloth, and put the hibiscus water in the fridge to cool.

To serve I added the tequila (to taste). I then mixed and poured over ice. You want to be able to taste the hibiscus, and you don't wan't it too sweet. You may want to add a bit of water if it is too sweet or strong.

He says that if you don't have homemade stock, use water for your recipes rather than buying canned or boxed stock. And he wants you to do it for flavor; cost savings is a bonus.

I've tried water instead of canned broth for several recipes when I was short of homemade stock. The only time it failed was when the recipe called for a full two quarts of broth that was meant to provide most of the flavor in the dish. If a recipe calls for just a cup or two of broth, I have found substituting water is no problem.

Tags: cooking, soup, broth, tips

<clipSource>http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/food/356406_eatcheap26.html</clipSource>

Goddess of Water

clipped by: wenlore61

Clip Source: images.ask.com

Tags: goddess, fantasy

<clipSource>http://images.ask.com/fr?q=moon+goddess+&desturi=http%3A%2F%2Fsheen-sonata.diaryland.com%2Fmybday.html&imagesrc=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.quizilla.com%2FK%2Fkalmasterz%2F1068096139_tergoddess.jpg&thumbsrc=http%3A%2F%2F66.235.120.64%2Fts%3Ft%3D4573933257754895349%26pid%3D23296%26ppid%3D5&o=20009&l=dir&thumbuselocalisedstatic=false&fn=1068096139_tergoddess.jpg&imagewidth=432&imageheight=351&fs=27&ft=jpg&f=2&fm=i&ftbURI=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.ask.com%2Fpictures%3Fq%3Dmoon%2Bgoddess%2B%26page%3D2%26o%3D20009%26l%3Ddir%26pstart%3D&q</clipSource>
