Suicides among serving US soldiers are on course to hit a new record this year and could exceed the rate among the general population for the first time since the Vietnam War, according to Army officials.

By the end of last month, as many as 93 active duty soldiers had killed themselves so far this year, although 31 of those deaths remained under investigation.

If the total is confirmed and the trend continues, the suicide rate among soldiers would exceed that of the general US population for the first time since the Vietnam War, officials said, and top last year's figure of 115, the highest annual toll on record.

"With four months left, we're probably going to surpass 115," Colonel Eddie Stephens, the army's deputy director of human resources policy, told a Pentagon news conference.

The figures were revealed as Army General David Petraeus, America's senior commander in Iraq, recommended delaying troop reductions in Iraq until next year.

"War hero" McCain voted against healthcare funding for veterans in 2003, '04, '05, '06 and '07. Now veterans are confronting him on his record.

Prior to the RNC, IVAW had mailed, faxed, and personally delivered invitations to the McCain campaign to meet to discuss the recommendations. Yet the campaign ignored them, refusing to send anyone to meet with Davey, let alone address IVAW as a group. For the man who has built his presidential candidacy almost entirely on war hero mythology, McCain's snub was only the latest in a series of refusals to acknowledge the needs of a new generation of veterans. His record has become an ugly symbol of the hypocrisy of the Republican party.

The bottom line then is that the crisis of capital has only two outcomes: remove the competitors or, face the end of capitalism and build a socialist alternative. If the former, then general war (whatever its form, ie “endless war”) is the only conclusion, thereby consuming the over-accumulated capital, ‘taking out’ the major competitors and embarking on a new round of capitalist accumulation aka the post-WWII situation, this is after all, the lesson of history.

The purpose of post-World War I's League of Nations was to prepare those liberated from the Turks for independence. Once the indigenous populations demonstrated their ability to assume control, the mandates given to the war's victorious superpowers were supposed to be self-terminating. For the international community, justice for the Arabs meant guaranteeing their economic, civil, and religious rights. Awarding the Arabs any form of self-government within Palestine was precluded by British commitments to the Jews under the Balfour Declaration, which had been incorporated in the mandate of the League of Nations.[11]

At this point in history, post-World War I, political pressure caused the international community to endorse the Jewish desire for national self-determination and acc epted that the Jewish people had a justifiable claim to return to their homeland. Significantly, in this recognition, the Balfour Declaration and the Mandate under the League of Nations make no mention of Palestinians as a separate and distinct people with their own national rights. The indigenous people were regarded as residents whose political identity was connected to the larger Arab nation.[9]

For the British, the matter was quite clear: Palestine was not a state but the name of a geographical area. This had been reinforced by the indigenous Arabs themselves.

When the First Congress of Muslim-Christian Associations met in Jerusalem in February 1919 to select Palestinian Arab representatives for the Paris Peace Conference, they adopted the following resolution:

On September 11, 2001, terrorists based out of Afghanistan attacked the United States. Our troops have been fighting there for nearly seven years, and the war is now escalating. In that time, 582 Americans have died there.

Yet, during the Republican National Convention, when it came time to honor the wartime sacrifices Americans have made overseas, the Party chose to focus on John McCain's Vietnam experience instead. In fact, the word "Afghanistan" was never mentioned by any of the speakers. But McCain's time in Vietnam was referenced a whopping 20 times. Progressive Accountability has the numbers.

McCain claims that he was tortured while in custody. There were no other American witnesses to this torture and some former POWs doubt that it happened at all. In fact, McCain himself admitted in a 1973 interview with the magazine US News and World Report that he volunteered to give military information in return for medical treatment, even before being subjected to any torture.

Bear in mind that McCain’s medals were awarded for resisting torture. Yet where was the resistance? Perhaps it is this gulf between the perception and the reality of John McCain that explains why so many Vietnam veterans’ groups openly despise him.

However much pity we might feel for a prisoner of war subjected to such intense pressures, the record is clear : McCain was no war hero. He was, rather, a coward, an incompetent, a collaborator and a traitor.

Wall St. & Congress have risked as much taxpayers money that could have paid for 16 years of *@#$%-over Iraq.

Now we can't pay to build or repair our own roads and bridges.

Be sure to notice the clear statement: "Until Friday the White House has been hostile to it." (i.e. hostile to the approval of money for roads and bridges,) --- because already Bush is trying to blame it on the Democrats.

For God's sake, could there be anything more basic to provide for a nation?

Federal Highway Fund Running Out of Money

WASHINGTON — An important account in the federal Highway Trust Fund will run out of money this month, which could hamper completion of road and bridge construction projects across the country, Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters said on Friday.

In July, the House passed a bill that would use $8 billion of general federal revenue — from income and other taxes, not the dedicated motor fuel tax — to finance highway projects. The measure has not gained much traction in the Senate, and until Friday the White House had been hostile to it. But Ms. Peters said on Friday that the administration now endorses the measure, because “immediate action” is required to ensure that the states do not suffer.

Palin: Iraq war 'a task that is from God'

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."

In an address last June, the Republican vice presidential candidate also urged ministry students to pray for a plan to build a $30 billion natural gas pipeline in the state, calling it "God's will."

Palin asked the students to pray for the troops in Iraq, and noted that her eldest son, Track, was expected to be deployed there.

"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," she said. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan."

A video of the speech was posted at the Wasilla Assembly of God's Web site before finding its way on to other sites on the Internet.

KIEV, Ukraine - U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has pledged U.S. support for Ukraine following last month's war between neighboring Russia and Georgia.

Cheney says in remarks Friday that Ukrainians should be able to live "without the threat of tyranny, economic blackmail and military invasion or intimidation." He says the United States has a "deep and abiding interest" in Ukraine's security.

Cheney spoke after meeting with President Viktor Yushchenko. Cheney's visit to Ukraine and two other ex-Soviet republics signaled that the United States will continue cultivating close ties in the region.

That's even after Russia showed it was willing to use military force against countries along its border.

John McCain was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He is therefore infallible, untouchable, bulletproof, and a genius in all matters of foreign policy.

It is well known that anyone who was a prisoner of war instantly has special knowledge of all matters dealing with foreign countries. Everyone knows that.

Even in the face of absurdly untrue and factually incorrect statements, no one can question the foreign policy credentials of a man tortured as a prisoner of war.

There is a magic transformation that occurs when someone is tortured in a foreign country by a foreigner who speaks a foreign language.

All that exposure to foreign-ness makes a person instantly brilliant when it comes to all things foreign. Like foreign policy. Like foreign movies. Like foreign restaurants.
