Virtual reality set to transform physiotherapy

Patients who need physiotherapy following a stroke or accident could soon be put through their paces in a virtual reality environment.

A researcher at the University of Portsmouth is creating a rehabilitation programme that places patients on a treadmill and into a virtual world. It works by using moving images to trick the patient’s brain into thinking he or she is walking more slowly than they are which in turn encourages them to walk faster and further.

Tiger Temple, or Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua, is a Buddhist temple in Western Thailand which keeps numerous animals, among them several tame tigers that walk around freely once a day and can be petted by tourists.

The Theravada Buddhist temple is located in the Saiyok district of Thailand's Kanchanaburi province, not far from the border with Myanmar, some 38 km north-west of Kanchanaburi along the 323 highway. It was founded in 1994 as a forest temple and sanctuary for numerous wild animals. In 1995 it received the Golden Jubilee Buddha Image, made of 80 kilograms of gold.

They are washed and handled by Thai staff and the younger tigers by the volunteers. Once a day they are led on leashes to a nearby quarry. Originally they would roam around freely in this area but now, with the increase in tourists and the amount of tigers who sit in the canyon, will always be chained.

I walk the line

NASHVILLE, TN: The strains of Rhinestone Cowboy twanged around Tootsies bar. An aging covers band were working through their repertoire of country classics. Tourists in plaid shirts and Stetsons murmured appreciatively.

I stared into my drink. I've enjoyed a bit of steel guitar as much as the next man ever since one night when I was left alone in the house with a bottle of single malt and a Johnny Cash CD. But this wasn't exactly the Man In Black at San Quentin.

If the music of Memphis had given me an insight into how black culture was integrated into the American mainstream, I was hoping Nashville might tell me something similar about the recent history of southern whites.

Fox News, in a one-hour special on Obama’s associates hosted by Sean Hannity, came up with an “Internet journalist” named Andy Martin who has spent his life running bizarre political campaigns with occasional detours into the clink and filing lawsuits laced with paranoia and anti-Semitism. Based on this expertise, Martin deduced that Ayers was the puppet master of Obama’s rise in politics and that Obama’s community-organizer gig was actually training for “a radical overthrow of the government.”

Keating said he knew a young mother who took her child for a walk while wearing Bermuda shorts. A motorist, overwhelmed with lust at the sight of the back of her uncovered calves, lost control of his car and slammed into them. Everybody was killed, and it was all her fault. We were then asked to sign pledge cards promising to conform to standards of modesty that would have satisfied the Taliban.

True, none of this really proves that I was responsible for the banking scandals of the 1980s.

Poor Senator Larry Craig got a truckload of moral condemnation for tapping his wingtips in the men's john, but his party proposes to spend 5 percent of the GDP to buy up bad loans made by men who walk away with their fortunes intact while retirees see their 401(k) go pffffffff like a defunct air mattress, and it's business as usual.

John McCain is a lifelong deregulator and believer in letting brokers and bankers do as they please -- remember Lincoln Savings and Loan and his intervention with federal regulators in behalf of his friend Charles Keating, who then went to prison?

McCain now decries greed on Wall Street and suggests a commission be formed to look into the problem. This is like Casanova coming out for chastity.

Confident men took leave of common sense and bet on the idea of perpetual profit in the real estate market and crashed. But it wasn't their money. It was your money they were messing with.

Ron Conway, an investor in more than 100 contemporary tech start-ups and about that many in the last tech boom, sees the current financial environment as very similar to the 2000-2001 tech economy meltdown. His advice, as he laid it out to me earlier today and to his portfolio companies yesterday in an e-mail (after the jump), is the same as it was then: "Raise money internally by reducing cost."

He says, "The funding climate is going to tighten no matter what we do. The sooner we can prepare for it, the better."

At least, he says, entrepreneurs are more mature and proactive than they were in the last downturn. They're coming to him, some with cutback plans and some just seeking advice. As he puts it, the ones who come to him and say, "Walk me through the steps I should be taking," are the ones that will weather the storm.

Maple leaves are coming down in ones and twos, and the ones and twos are beginning to add up in drifts along the pasture edges.

Most of the time, nature is simply there — when I do chores, when I walk down to the mailbox, when I look up from writing. I don’t expect solace from it, nor do I theologize it with my own desires. It simply persists in sublime indifference. And yet from time to time I find myself surprised by it, and I know that what I am really noticing is the volatility of the human world.

It has nothing to say about financial meltdowns and dirty politics or, for that matter, personal grief. But the other lives on this farm do remind me of how captive I have become, like all of us, to the tensions of this incredible human season.

There is no escaping to it

It throws you back upon yourself again and again.

Judge temporarily suspends RealDVD sales

RealNetworks has been forced to temporarily suspend sales of RealDVD due to a legal battle with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The ban officially started yesterday morning.

While the actual demand of RealDVD is unknown, free software such as DVDShrink and DVDFab HD Decrypter remain widely available on the Internet. Depending on how the case turns out, companies creating data backup software may have to walk a fine line with possible serious copyright implications.

This message has been published on the RealDVD web site: "Due to recent legal action taken by the Hollywood Movie studios against us, RealDVD is temporarily unavailable. Rest assured, we will continue to work diligently to provide you with software that allows you to make a legal copy of DVDs for your own use."

The following movie studios are involved in the lawsuit: Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal, Twentieth Century Fox, Disney and Warner Bros.
