The true extent and shape of the heliosphere has been a subject of debate for more than half a century. Until now, the best clues came from the two Voyager spacecraft, which are believed to have passed through the heliopause at two different distances.

What a number of researchers have found is that the flow of the ENAs is uneven, with a significantly higher flow in a "ribbon" across the sky.

However, Ibex is showing us a very narrow ribbon that is two to three times brighter than anything else in the sky."

These concentrations of incoming particles were just missed by the Voyager spacecraft, Dr McComas explained.

But the exact shape, and the forces that cause it, are still a matter of debate between the teams.

In October of 1957, the Soviet Union started the Space Age with the launch of Sputnik. Since then, a lot of spacecraft have wended their way through the solar system and beyond. Trying to visualize all those trips can be mind-bending, so what better way to do so then to make a mind-bending graphic?

The good folks at National Geographic have done just that. Check this out:

This clever image displays all the space missions to various bodies. If an object (like the Moon) has a thicker spiral wound around it, then that means it’s been visited more times. Here’s some detail:

Star Trek begins with a premise so ridiculous it could only have originated in the Sixties: a united Earth, only about 250 years from now. At least Star Wars started off by telling you it was happening “in a galaxy far, far away” so any assumptions based on what we know about Earth and humanity didn’t necessarily apply. But Trek is science fiction, not fantasy, and so different rules need to apply, and they break them all the time. First they go and invent things like warp drive and transporters, which are implausible but not outside the realm of normal suspension of disbelief. Then, having created rules around how these marvelous devices work, they regularly break those rules.

Interstella 5555 is a feature-length Japanese animated musical film originally released on December 1, 2003. The film is the visual realization of Discovery, an album by Daft Punk. Each track from the album has been animated as an episode in the story of the abduction and rescue of an interstellar pop band. The film was produced by the creators of the Discovery album, along with Toei Animation, under the supervision of Leiji Matsumoto. The film has no dialogue and minimal sound effects.

clipper's remarks: Just passing along a little feedback on this new release for those who aren't big on blackberry or iphone. I upgraded to this just released model about two weeks ago. It hadn't even hit the floor yet, but they let me have it because they were out of stock on the previous model. My wife and I both got one and we find them exceptional. For anyone who takes a lot of pictures with their phone, I don;t believe there is a better camera option out there (it will blow you away). I have mine fully loaded with gps, vcast, internet browsing etc and the ease of use and speed is really good. .....just a word on a new product for anyone interested.

Verizon still hasn't fessed up to the imminent launch of its Voyager successor, but no matter -- its retail partners are happy to do that on their own. Best Buy's product page for the VX11000 enV Touch has now gone live, offering the phone for a $599.99 commitment-free -- which, to be fair, is still way less than the Pre's $849.99 -- along with a nice, clear bunch of press shots of the front of the phone from every conceivable angle. The front's nice, the inside's great, but one unexpected touch is the crazy stylized back; it doesn't make up for the loss of VCAST TV, admittedly, but it's pretty cool nonetheless.
