clipper's remarks: The Iraqi government is making it clear: no prior conditions for a US withdraw, no consideration of "conditions" on the ground, no "residual force" left in Iraq to train the Iraqi troops. All US soldiers must be gone by the end of 2011. Not a single one should remain. They all should just leave.

The Iraqi government has given the only reason that matters for their position: viz., it's their country and they have the right to show us the door.

The US isn't wanted in Iraq. It never has been. It's time to leave. A timetable for withdraw is the compromise the Iraqis are giving us. It's what they want...just like Barack Obama said.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Monday no security agreement with the United States could be reached unless it included a "specific deadline" for the withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq.

An aide to the prime minister said Monday that Iraq remained adamant that the last American soldier must leave Iraq by the end of 2011 _ regardless of conditions at the time.

"There can be no treaty or agreement except on the basis of Iraq's full sovereignty," al-Maliki told a gathering of tribal sheiks. He said such an agreement must be based on the principle that "no foreign soldier remains in Iraq after a specific deadline, not an open time frame."

A bezkonkurenčně nejlepší gag reel, který jsem našel, je ze seriálu Alias. Vysílal se u nás nedávno, avšak velmi pozdě v noci, takže spousta z vás ho možná ani nebude znát. Ale živočišnou a překrásnou Jennifer Garner si prostě nemůžete nechat ujít. A to zejména díky jejímu smíchu, který je tak nakažlivý, že se prostě neudržíte. Zejména doporučuji časy 5:59, 8:07 a 8:16, čímž ale nechci přeskakovat jiné pasáže tohoto videa. Pokud jste totiž všechny předchozí videa bez zájmu přešli, tohle rozhodně musíte vidět. I přesto, že to má téměř devět minut.

How, though, are you supposed to use the thing? According to the eminently readable rules of French grammar, the semicolon has several specific applications. First, it allows a writer to introduce a logical balance into a long phrase. Second, it can serve to divide two phrases that are in themselves independent, but whose significance is in some way linked (viz: "The semicolon is necessary; I have just proved it," or, as Michel Houellebecq, one of the very few contemporary French writers to use the point-virgule, would have it: "He was unable to remember his last erection; he was waiting for the storm.") It can also, more prosaically, be used to separate the various elements of an enumeration or list (or indeed to separate groups of similar elements linked by commas within a longer list). Finally, a semicolon can replace a comma when "the use of the latter might prove confusing".

"Good Faith" Torture Deemed OK

clipper's remarks: Interesting that they set a subjective standard for torture: viz., if the interrogator thought in "good faith" that the method wouldn't cause long-term mental harm. Note that it didn't require that the method would probably cause long-term mental harm, only that the interrogator didn't believe it would.

By defining torture subjectively, the Bush administration:
1. Consigned the definition of torture to belief, thereby making it impossible to adjudicate by objective measures.

2. Totally marginalized the detainee's likely reaction to the method and, thereby, nullified the detainee's humanness and recognition as a rights-bearing being.

This kind of sophistry one would expect of a brutal dictatorship.

The Justice Department in 2002 told the CIA that its interrogators would be safe from prosecution for violations of anti-torture laws if they believed "in good faith" that harsh techniques used to break prisoners' will would not cause "prolonged mental harm."

The Aug. 1, 2002, legal opinion signed by then-Assistant Attorney General Jay Bybee was issued the same day he wrote a memo for then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales defining torture as only those "extreme acts" that cause pain similar in intensity to that caused by death or organ failure.

The Bybee legal opinion defining torture was withdrawn more than two years later.

The standards used to judge how physically rough an interrogation could be are blacked out. But interrogations that stress a detainee psychologically or emotionally were not allowed to cause "prolonged mental harm." That was defined as harm lasting months or even years after the interrogation.

No cameras or lights were used. Instead two technologies were used to capture 3D images: Geometric Informatics and Velodyne LIDAR. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne Lidar system that uses multiple lasers is used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In this video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes.

Exciting for Creative Commons is that the data (although not the music) used to produce this music video are being made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License on the Google Code site. The Source code to the software used is being made available under a Apache License 2.0. This combination of Open Source licenses for code and Creative Commons licenses for data/content is very "good idea".

Mugabe for his part, has been very astute at exploiting the ‘Pan Africanist’ position viz a vis the black-white issue, again this is all for domestic consumption but still it’s up to the Zimbabwean people to decide what happens. More’s the pity that Tsvangarai is an inept and totally compromised politician.

As usual it’s the role of the Western media that is central to the process. Without its active complicity in covering up the crimes of the West and its participation in the Mugabe diversion, the USUK axis could not get away with its own anti-democratic and illegal actions around the planet.

To advocate private ownership of the means of production is by no means to maintain that the capitalist social system, based on private property, is perfect. What it says is simply that for the attainment of the ends that men have in mind only the capitalist system is suitable and that every attempt to realize a socialist, interventionist, agrarian socialist, or syndicalist society must necessarily prove unsuccessful.
