The fate of the Italian composer's legacy is unique. After the Napoleonic wars, it was thought that a large part of Vivaldi's work had been irrevocably lost. However, in the autumn of 1926, after a detectivelike search by researchers, 14 folios of Vivaldi's previously unknown religious and secular works were found in the library of a monastery in Piedmont. Some even- and odd-numbered volumes were missing, and so the search continued. Finally, in October 1930, the missing volumes were found to be with the descendants of the Grand Duke Durazzo, who had acquired the property as early as the eighteenth century.

To its amazement, the world of music was presented with 300 concerts for various instruments and 18 operas, not counting a number of arias and more than 100 vocal-instrumental pieces. Such an impressive list of newly unearthed opuses warranted a re-evaluation of Vivaldi's creativity.

Vivaldi work revived 278 years on

A long-lost opera by the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi has been performed for the first time in 278 years, in the city of Prague.

Argippo was written for the Czech capital and premiered there in 1730.

But the opera - a tale of "passion, love and trickery" in an Indian maharaja's court - later disappeared without trace.

Most of the score was discovered in Germany by a young Czech musician who completed the missing parts.

Ondrej Macek is a keen harpsichordist with a passion for tracking down rare music.

But all he had to go on was the original booklet from the opening night containing the libretto, and the knowledge that the troupe of Italian musicians who first performed Argippo in Prague later moved to Germany.

Only about two-thirds of the score had survived the centuries, and so Mr Macek used other arias from Vivaldi to fit the preserved text.

The Wangaratta Choristers are presenting two sparkling Sacred music performances in Wodonga and Wangaratta this month.

The Wodonga concert is at St John’s on Saturday, April 26 at 2.30pm, and in Wangaratta at the Holy Trinity Cathedral on Sunday, April 27 at 2.30pm.

They will feature authentic Baroque choral works by Bach, Greene, Vivaldi and Blow on the Choristers’ Smenge organ continuo (Benedict Wilson, Adrian Barrett and John Rivers) with brilliant embellishment by Ursula Genaehr (recorders, gemshorns and violin), Ian Whitaker (cello) and Damien Rhys Jones (violin).

The magnificent solo voices of Peter Mander (tenor) and Robert Latham (bass) will decorate these concerts, particularly in Bach’s Cantata 131, ‘Out of darkness call I, Lord, to Thee’.

When scanned, some records seemed much denser than others. Dense tracks were much harder to follow.

Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" was fine

When illuminated in parallel with the groove's direction some sort of depth-modulation became visible.

Once the image was ready, writing the decoder was very simple. All it did was rotate a "needle" around a given center at some predefined angular velocity, attempting to keep track of the groove the needle was initially positioned on. The offsets (dr) between this track and the basic radial were bunched into a sequence of samples. these were later converted into wav files.

Listening to the following reference recording might allow you to recognize these as the music-within-noise they actually are!!! (I guess a highly imaginative listener is required too).

Designer Rick Lee's homage to the cycle of the year, the 4 Seasons table groups offers a playful, artistic takes on the four seasons. Each table is a different height and shape, to replicate the growing cycles of the year, and features an accompanying CNC (computer numerically controlled)-cut shape: buds in spring; growing leaves in summer; fallen leaves in fall and barren branches in the winter. Lee gets two green thumbs up for materials and manufacturing; bamboo plywood and CNC routing (whereby the design is drawn up and locked in with a computer, which controls the router and (theoretically) creates it without mistakes; it also allows for more efficient use of wood, since offcuts can be minimized with the design) make for a green, poetic, dare we say melodious experience. To clear out undesirables, opera and classical music have been piped into Canadian parks, Australian railway stations, 7-Eleven parking lots and, most recently, London Underground stops.
According to most reports, it works. Figures from the British capital released in January showed robberies in the subway down by 33 percent, assaults on staff by 25 percent and vandalism of trains and stations by 37 percent. Sources in other locales have reported fewer muggings and drug deals. London authorities now plan to expand the playing of Mozart, Vivaldi, Handel and opera (sung by Pavarotti) from three tube stations to an additional 35.
