Bishops' synod will pave the way for Biblical studies, says Benedict XVI

Vatican City, Oct 5, 2008 / 09:50 am (CNA).- After celebrating the opening Mass for the 12th general assembly of the Synod of Bishops at the Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls, Pope Benedict XVI made the synod the focus of his words before the recitation of the Angelus. The Holy Father invited his audience to support the work of the synod on the Bible with their prayers, invoking in a special way "the maternal intercession of the Virgin Mary, the perfect Disciple of the Divine Word."

The current synod on the Bible will last for three weeks and includes 253 "synod fathers": 51 from Africa, 62 from the Americas, 41 from Asia, 90 from Europe and 9 from Oceania, who will study and discuss the “working document” alongside numerous experts and auditors, men and women. There will also be "fraternal delegates" from other Churches and ecclesial communities present.

(Tampa, Fla) During a campaign appearance by Vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin at a retirement village in Tampa, Florida, onlookers were stunned to see what they believed to be an image of the Blessed Mother Mary embedded in Palin’s wrapped puffed-up do.

“At first I thought it was just one of those Love Bugs y’get caught in the car grill, ” said 82-year-old Hubert Henry. “But then it started glowin’ like the baby Jesus I seen last year in the window at the Stuckey’s just of Route 1 in Hulmville. Damn miracle, I tellya.”

McCain spokesman, Tucker Bounds, said that while the selection of Palin was a miracle for the campaign, the viability of Palin being chosen by the Virgin Mary to appear in her hair was something he’d rather leave up to the voter.

“People, and that includes Christians, are going to make up their mind on the issues,” said Bounds. “If the fact that some people believe that the Blessed Mother of Jesus and Sarah being somehow intertwined is an issue, so be it.”

Scan Toaster puts the power of 'miracle toast' into the hands of mere mortals

Industrial designer Sung Bae Chang has finally given us mortals the ability to do that which was once considered a bona-fide miracle. Using the "Scan Toaster," anyone with a PC and a USB cable can burn the likeness of the Blessed Virgin Mary (or any image or text that you wish) onto a slice of bread. The toaster utilizes a network of toasting "modules" -- hot wires that rotate within a 30 degree radius -- that burn the image or text you have selected onto the delicious slice of your choice. The peripheral is a finalist in a design competition run by the appliance manufacturer Electrolux, so as-of-yet there aren't any plans to manufacture it on a mass scale. We're guessing that Mr. Sun Bae Chang probably wants to keep the awesome power of the Scan Toaster for himself anyway.

Castelgandolfo, Aug 13, 2008 / 03:17 pm (CNA).- In Wednesday's general audience, celebrated in Castel Gandolfo, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about St. Teresa Benedict of the Cross, also known as St. Edith Stein, and St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe, whose feast days the Church celebrates in August.

“He who prays never loses hope, even when he finds himself in difficult situations.”

Pope Benedict added: St. Teresa Benedict of the Cross, whose feast the Church celebrated on August 9, and St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe, whose feast is tomorrow, the vigil of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, are such examples in our time. The Pontiff reminded his audience that both saints were martyrs in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, witnesses of the love which “defeats the darkness of egoism and hatred.” The Holy Father recalled words attributed St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe: “Hatred is not a creative force: only love is.” On August 14, 1941, the saint died in place of a fellow prisoner.
