Blocking emotional memories, the council asserted, risks "falsifying our perception and understanding of the world. It risks making shameful acts seem less shameful, or terrible acts less terrible, than they really are."

The council expressed a host of concerns and troubling scenarios.

For example, the council posited, what if somebody committed an act of violence and then took propranolol to dull the emotional impact. Would they come to think of violence as more tolerable than it really is?

Would rape victims, having taken memory-altering drugs to ease their trauma, forget key details vital to the prosecution of their attackers?

More broadly, is there a social obligation for people to remember the past events for the communal good, such as victims of the Holocaust?

I'd argue that we're looking beyond his religious beliefs because that's what we as a society do. When we look at other religiously motivated domestic terrorists, like Eric Randolph (who bombed both the Olympic Park and an abortion clinic), we don't accept religion alone as a motivation. It's just not enough to explain how an American would look other Americans in the face and then end their lives

If we write Hasan off as nothing but a religious zealot, we're missing the bigger picture

The city’s taxi union boss was handed a year in jail Tuesday for what a judge deemed an “honour crime.”

Yusef Salam Al Mezel, 44, had pleaded guilty to criminally harassing his 23-year-old daughter, Eman, over three weeks in July 2007.

“Mr. Al Mezel has threatened his daughter with serious violence and has caused her to fear for her safety in the name of honour,” Judge Lynn Ratushny wrote. “He has committed the crime of harassment against her in the name of honour.”

Al Mezel admitted to pushing his daughter, threatening to break her legs and kill her and smashing her computer. When she fled marriage to a Syrian man for a $9,000 dowry, he stalked her to a shelter

A prominent Columbia architecture professor punched a female university employee in the face at a Harlem bar during a heated argument about race relations, cops said yesterday.

Police busted Lionel McIntyre, 59, for assault yesterday after his bruised victim, Camille Davis, filed charges.

McIntyre and Davis, who works as a production manager in the school's theater department, are both regulars at Toast, a popular university bar on Broadway and 125th Street, sources said.

The professor, who is black, had been engaged in a fiery discussion about "white privilege" with Davis, who is white, and another male regular, who is also white, Friday night at 10:30 when fists started flying, patrons said.

McIntyre, who is known as "Mac" at the bar, shoved Davis, and when the other patron and a bar employee tried to break it up, the prof slugged Davis in the face, witnesses said.

Not a big well-thought-out plot centrally directed from a “safe haven” in South Asia and undertaken by brilliant covert operatives, but the desperate violent act of a clearly disturbed individual. It’s going to be very hard to prevent this sort of thing. As long as the United States remains a country in which firearms are widely available"for the foreseeable future, in other words"we’re going to be unusually vulnerable to mentally ill spree killers of various kinds, including spree killers who nod in the direction of Islamist thinking.

At Army Base, Some Violence Is Too Familiar

Fort Hood is still reeling from last week’s carnage, in which an Army psychiatrist is accused of a massacre that left 13 people dead. But in the town of Killeen and other surrounding communities, the attack, one of the worst mass shootings on a military base in the United States, is also seen by many as another blow in an area that has been beset by crime and violence since the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq began. Reports of domestic abuse have grown by 75 percent since 2001. At the same time, violent crime in Killeen has risen 22 percent while declining 7 percent in towns of similar size in other parts of the country.

The stresses are seen in other ways, too.

Since 2003, there have been 76 suicides by personnel assigned to Fort Hood, with 10 this year, according to military officials.

Veteran’s Day is a time to remember “All gave some….Some gave all.”

The impact of two distant wars became personal once the “knocks on the door” delivered the horrifying news and haunted a house forever. Prayers that the Pentagon “got it wrong” vanished when asked if they wanted an ‘Arlington’ funeral.

‘Arlington’ is an idyllic hillside cemetery and is easily seen while driving on the Arlington Memorial Bridge towards Virginia. It’s the last stop straight ahead.

It’s also the last stop for those sons and daughters who were killed after announcing to their family they wanted to be “Army Strong” or part of “The Few…The Proud” and then fearlessly joined the deadliest profession.

The Mayor is using a straw-man argument that conveniently provides him with an opportunity to politicize the terrorist attack as part and parcel with America’s love of guns.

Mayor Daley, and other politicians, like to blame gun violence on the guns themselves because that is so much easier than admitting any inconvenient (politically incorrect) truths which might be revealed if they were to place blame where it belongs.

Kids murdering each other in the inner city? That’s because of guns, not the War On Drugs which turns poor children into black market drug distributing gang members.

We Need To Do Better For Our Military

4th Brigade was compared head-to-head with 3rd Brigade, which recently returned from Iraq.

The 4th Brigade, now in Afghanistan, has suffered a higher casualty rate than other units its size in two deployments, the Army found, losing lives at a rate more than eight times that of 3rd Brigade.

Along with the deaths came intense combat that took a mental toll on troops, the Army found. Soldiers in 4th Brigade were more likely than other soldiers to suffer mental illness.

The study also found, though, that soldiers feel their careers can be damaged by seeking mental health help and too often feel that enlisted leaders don't support troops with mental illness.

Lt. Gen. Michael Rochelle, the Army's top personnel officer, said a wider study of all Army violent crime shows that 65 percent of 2,726 cases since 2001 were committed by soldiers who hadn't been to war.

Most Fort Carson soldiers who came home from war to commit murder had lives that were broken by combat stress, mental illness and drug and alcohol problems, a report released by the Army today says.

The report, commissioned by commanders last year after six 4th Brigade Combat Team soldiers were charged in murders in a 12-month period, says combat stress, and mental health issues found in the bulk of soldiers-turned-killers combined with a cocktail of substance abuse issues, including drug and alcohol abuse, that wasn't consistently addressed.

Lt. Gen. Eric Schoomaker, the Army's surgeon general, said while no one factor accounts for the violence, several causes contributed to the cluster, including substance abuse, mental illness and failures of leadership.

I forrige nummer av Morgenbladet argumenterte jeg for at politikken på cannabisfeltet er feilslått, og at vi bør vurdere legalisering. Den nye lederen i justiskomiteen, Per Sandberg fra Fremskrittspartiet, sier:

– Skulle vi legalisere mord også, fordi det er så mange av dem?

Jeg smilte litt, men tenkte så: Han er tross alt leder av justiskomiteen. Han bør svare på hvordan han bedømmer alvoret i ulike lovovertredelser.

Per Sandberg er selv straffedømt for vold. Ifølge dommen skallet han ned en mann og ga ham flere knyttneveslag i ansiktet.

Mange studier viser at folk flest har forståelse for kriminalitet som utøves av dem selv og personer de kjenner, og nøler med å kreve høye strafferammer. Kanskje har Sandberg hatt lite kontakt med folk som røyker hasj. På den annen side bør en justispolitiker kunne reflektere mer allment over slike saksforhold

(a) vold mot en asylsøker, (b) bruk og besittelse av cannabis? Hvilke straffereaksjoner er rimelige?
