Meltdown: Mora the Elder is the Babe Ruth of meltdowns — the king of Career Value — and we knew we were in the presence of greatness from his second year in New Orleans. In 1987, the Saints lost a close game to the 49ers, falling to 3-3. Mora had this to say after the game: “The Saints ain’t good enough. We’re close, and close don’t mean s***. I’m tired of coming close. I’m pissed off right now. You bet your ass I am. I’m sick of coulda, woulda, shoulda, coming close, if only.”
Result: We’re picking this one over his later “diddly-poo” speech in New Orleans because of the positive effects. The Saints ran off a nine-game winning streak, finishing with a 12-3 record, and the first winning season in the franchise’s 20-year history. They lost to Jerry Burns’ Vikings in the wild card round of the playoffs, ensuring great quotage either way.

How Did America Get its Name?

The naming of America goes to show that it pays to have a good publicist. When Christopher Columbus returned from his first voyage, he spoke (incorrectly) of wonderful discoveries off the coasts of Japan and India. The prospect of a new route to Asia excited his countrymen, but it did not grip Europe as would the discovery of a new continent.

In 1502 the Florentine merchant and explorer Amerigo Vespucci, on his second voyage across the Atlantic, began to suspect Columbus’ error. In letters to friends he spoke of a "Mundus Novis," or "New World." This grander description sparked celebration throughout Europe, and soon after a group of cartographers, poets and noblemen in France produced a popular pamphlet in which modern-day South America is named for the Italian explorer.

Of course, both Columbus and Amerigo fare well in history books considering that the Vikings beat them to the New World by 500 years.

A replica Viking vessel plying the North Sea this month is part of an effort to learn more about what the Norsemen were really up to

The amazing Faroe Islands

I recently stumbled on some nice photos of some very interesting looking islands. On further investigation I found that these were the Faroe Islands and that they lie north, north west of the UK approximately 300km from the top end of Scotland and between the North Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea. Not much is known of the earliest history of the islands, Irish hermits (monks) settled on the islands in the sixth century, bringing with them sheep and oats as well as early Irish language.

PITTSBURGH - Dwight White, the Steel Curtain defensive end known as "Mad Dog" who helped lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 58.

White was best known for climbing out of a hospital bed to play in the Steelers' first Super Bowl victory, 16-6 over the Minnesota Vikings in 1975. White lost 18 pounds after being diagnosed with pneumonia and a lung infection, yet played nearly the entire game.

White made his first Pro Bowl in 1972, playing on a Steelers defensive line that also featured Hall of Famer Mean Joe Greene and defensive end L.C. Greenwood.

Researchers Recover Thousand-Year-Old Viking DNA

The Vikings buried on the Danish island of Funen may very well have sailed all the way to Constantinople or Baghdad or Moscow, looting and pillaging with lusty ferocity. And now we've got their DNA.

In a study published today in Public Library of Science ONE, Danish scientists describe the retrieval of genetic material from ten Viking skeletons found in an ancient burial site near the city of Odense. The remains date to 1000 AD, the twilight of Viking civilization.

The discovery of the DNA is not in itself extraordinary (though it certainly is cool to have Viking DNA samples). The significance instead lies in the steps the researchers took to keep the DNA free from contamination.

Recall some famous advice, coincidentally also set in Denmark: There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio, then are dreamt of in your PubMed abstracts....

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2008) — Although "Viking" literally means "pirate," recent research has indicated that the Vikings were also traders to the fishmongers of Europe. Stereotypically, these Norsemen are usually pictured wearing a horned helmet but in a new study, Jørgen Dissing and colleagues from the University of Copenhagen, investigated what went under the helmet; the scientists were able to extract authentic DNA from ancient Viking skeletons, avoiding many of the problems of contamination faced by past researchers.

Analysis of DNA from the remains of ancient humans provides valuable insights into such important questions as the origin of genetic diseases, migration patterns of our forefathers and tribal and family patterns.

The world's tallest Lego tower which took 500,000 bricks to build

Visitors to Legoland Windsor yesterday helped set a new world record for the tallest tower made of Lego bricks.

Thousands of children and their families helped put the final bricks in place to complete the monster structure, which stands nearly 100ft tall.

The tower is designed to resemble a Viking longboat mast to mark the opening of the new Land of the Vikings at the Berkshire theme park.

Positioned at the park's main entrance, it is made up of almost half a million Lego bricks and celebrates 50 years of the popular children's toy.
