After 40 Years, Age Discrimination Still Gets Second-Class Treatment
</NYT_HEADLINE>

After working for a vending machine company for more than 20 years, James O’Connor was replaced with someone younger. He sued. He testified that his boss had disparaged older workers, including saying — two weeks before he was fired — “O’Connor, you are too damn old for this kind of work.” A federal court was unmoved, ruling in 1995 that he had not connected the bigoted comments to his firing.

When two older supervisors at a light bulb company were fired and sued, their claim of age discrimination was denied. A federal appeals court ruled in 1994 that the statement by the company’s vice president that “there comes a time when we have to make way for younger people” was “irrelevant.” It was simply a “fact of life,” the court said, with “no disparaging undertones.”

Tags: age, second, class, discrimination

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/07/opinion/07sat4.html?ref=opinion#</clipSource>

Report: 237 millionaires in Congress

clipped by: sahara
clipper's remarks: Senators’ estimated median reportable worth sunk to about $1.79 million from $2.27 million in 2007. The House’s median income was significantly lower and also sank, bottoming out at $622,254 from $724,258 in 2007.

But CRP’s analysis suggests that some lawmakers did well for themselves between 2007 and 2008, even as many Americans lost jobs and saw their savings and their home values plummet.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) gained about $9.2 million. Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) gained about $3 million, Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) had an estimated $2.6 million gain, and Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) gained about $2.8 million.

Some lawmakers have profited from investments in companies that have received federal bailouts; dozens of lawmakers are invested in Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America.
Vice President Joe Biden has often tagged himself as an original blue collar man. The CRP backs him up, putting his net worth at just $27,000.

Clip Source: www.politico.com

Talk about bad timing.

As Washington reels from the news of 10.2 percent unemployment, the Center for Responsive Politics is out with a new report describing the wealth of members of Congress.

Among the highlights: Two-hundred-and-thirty-seven members of Congress are millionaires. That’s 44 percent of the body – compared to about 1 percent of Americans overall.

CRP says California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa is the richest lawmaker on Capitol Hill, with a net worth estimated at about $251 million.

Darrell Issa is the richest lawmaker on Capitol Hill, with a net worth estimated at about $251 million. Next in line: Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), worth about $244.7 million; Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), worth about $214.5 million; Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), worth about $209.7 million

All told, at least seven lawmakers have net worths greater than $100 million, according to the Center’s 2008 figures.

<clipSource>http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29235.html</clipSource>

Arms Dealer urges strong U.S. commitment to Afghan war

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: Back on the job, or still on the job.

Clip Source: www.reuters.com

BENTON HARBOR, Michigan (Reuters) - Former Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday urged President Barack Obama to commit enough troops to win the war in Afghanistan, warning hesitation would embolden U.S. foes and devastate its allies.

"I don't see how he can do anything other than move aggressively to achieve victory," the Wyoming Republican, a harsh critic of the new administration, said in a speech to a Michigan business group.

"Our adversaries take heart from our hesitation and vacillation," Cheney said.

"Our not following through will have devastating consequences not only for Afghanistan but also for our NATO allies. The White House has touted his role in the first phase of developing national organic standards. But those standards, as they first emerged in draft form in the Clinton years, were notoriously loose about allowing genetically engineered crops and the use of sewage-sludge fertilizers to be labeled as “organic.”

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

<NYT_HEADLINE type=" " version="1.0">

But the business of CropLife — an arm of which openly scoffed at Michelle Obama’s plans for an organic garden — is to increase exports of agricultural chemicals.

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/04/opinion/04wed4.html?_r=1#</clipSource>

Fannie Mae: "Deed For Lease" Program

clipped by: sincitykitty
clipper's remarks: The government-controlled company, through its new "Deed for Lease" program, will allow borrowers to transfer ownership to Fannie Mae and sign a one-year lease, with month-to-month extensions after that.

Clip Source: www.huffingtonpost.com

Fannie Mae: "Deed For Lease" Program Will Let Thousands Rent Out Homes To Avoid Foreclosure

WASHINGTON — Thousands of borrowers on the verge of foreclosure will soon have the option of renting their homes from Fannie Mae, under a policy announced Thursday.

The government-controlled company, through its new "Deed for Lease" program, will allow borrowers to transfer ownership to Fannie Mae and sign a one-year lease, with month-to-month extensions after that.

The program will "eliminate some of the uncertainty of foreclosure, keeps families and tenants in their homes during a transitional period, and helps to stabilize neighborhoods and communities," Jay Ryan, a Fannie Mae vice president, said in a statement.

<clipSource>http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/05/fannie-mae-deed-for-lease_n_346988.html</clipSource>

Vatican summons world leaders to discuss Church's fears that politics is losing its religion

clipped by: nuttyriv3r

Clip Source: www.dailymail.co.uk

By

Last year Mr Gore's venture capital firm loaned a small California firm $75m
 to develop energy-saving technology.

The company, Silver Spring Networks, produces hardware and software to make
 the electricity grid more efficient.

The deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy
Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants, the New York Times
reports. Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which
 Silver Spring has contracts.

Critics, mostly on the political right and among global warming sceptics, say
Mr. Gore is poised to become the world's first "carbon billionaire,"

Last week's release of an FBI interview summary of Dick Cheney's answers in the criminal investigation underscores why Fitzgerald felt that way.

On 72 occasions, according to the 28-page FBI summary, Cheney equivocated to the FBI during his lengthy May 2004 interview, saying he could not be certain in his answers to questions about matters large and small in the Plame controversy.

The Cheney interview reflects a team of prosecutors and FBI agents trying to find out whether the leaks of Plame's CIA identity were orchestrated at the highest level of the White House and carried out by, among others, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Cheney's chief of staff.

Tags: cheney, scooter libby, iraq, valerie plame, joe wilson, cia, wmd

<clipSource>http://dailymail.com/News/NationandWorld/200911020221</clipSource>

Partial Clip Of My Instablog Article: "Open Letter to Liz Cheney, Esq. ..."

clipped by: ericgyoung
clipper's remarks: Here is a partial clip of the above-referenced article, which you can read in full on Instablogs. On Thursday, President Obama left the White </HEADUP><HEADUP>House</HEADUP><HEADUP> just after midnight and flew by helicopter to Dover </HEADUP><HEADUP>Air Force</HEADUP><HEADUP> Base to attend the return of the remains of fallen American soldiers killed in </HEADUP><HEADUP>Afghanistan</HEADUP><HEADUP>. Tonight, Lawrence O’Donnell reported on </HEADUP><HEADUP>MSNBC</HEADUP><HEADUP> about the “easily predictable” attack response from former Vice President Cheney’s daughter, Liz Cheney, on Fox’s John Gibson Show.
