Historic Church Celebrated

A century ago, the then-newly built Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church opened its doors to the community for the first time.

Between then and now, some changes have been made to the neat white- steepled structure at 715 Adams St. A church office and a choir loft were added in those years, but one thing remained constant: the church’s mission to spread the message of Christ and serve the community.

On Sunday, Oct. 14, the congregation of Quinn Chapel will celebrate the building’s 100 years in the Ironton community with a special program at 4 p.m.

In the beginning

While the building itself is 100 years old, the actual congregation has roots that reach further back. Quinn Chapel was originally founded in 1856 by newly freed slaves who crossed the Ohio River at Burlington, via the Underground Railroad. The new Ohioans settled in Ironton and sought work at the Vesuvius Furnace.

Vesuvius Could Blow Again

French and Italian scientists said on Wednesday they could not rule out another cataclysmic explosion by Vesuvius, the volcano that destroyed Pompeii in A.D. 79.

It has been dormant since 1944.

They report that the volcano's magma chamber, deep beneath the surface, has been steadily rising over the past 20,000 years.

The shallowest reservoir now lies at a depth of five to 5.5 miles.

"If this magma is of a more acid composition, a type similar to the one which caused the Pompei eruption, you can can expect an extremely explosive, dangerous eruption,

Vesuvius' comforting silence over the past 64 years could be attributable to a filling-up of the magma chamber, but equally it could mean that the chamber's ceiling has been sealed over, he said.

If so, the volcano could explode like a bolted-down lid on a pressure cooker.

Robert "Fish" Fishman is the extremely dedicated and astoundingly passionate drummer for the eighties hair band Vesuvius, who is living the rock n' roll dream until he is unceremoniously kicked out of the band. Twenty years after his rock star fantasies are destroyed, just when Fish has finally given up all hope, he hears that his nephew's high school rock band A.D.D. is looking for a new drummer. They reluctantly make him the newest member of the band, giving him a chance to reclaim the rock God throne he's always thought he deserved, and taking the young band along for the ride of their lives.

Hotels we like

In the last year, I've been told again and again by various people about this amazing place in Italy called Isola d'Ischia (Ischia Island). If you've seen the movie The Talented Mr Ripley, you've visited Ischia - at least in spirit. If you'd like to see it for real, there are some pretty glamorous hotels to choose from. Let's start with the Albergo San Montano.

Ischia was born out of an extinct volcano, and sits elegantly in the Bay of Naples alongside Capri. The San Montano takes advantage of this with a stunning location. These pictures say it all, really. Jawdropping 360-degree views of Naples, Mounts Vesuvius and Epomeo, the Sorrentine peninsula, and the island of Ventotene.

The hotel's interior is decorated with a subtle nautical theme and has been described as 'very Italian' (antiques, brass, mahogany and leather), but it's San Montano's outside space that's more interesting.

STORED in a sky-lit reading room on the top floor of the Biblioteca Nazionale in Naples are the charred remains of the only library to survive from classical antiquity. The ancient world's other great book collections -- at Athens, Alexandria and Rome -- all perished in the chaos of the centuries. But the library of the Villa of the Papyri was conserved, paradoxically, by an act of destruction.

A century ago London hosted the Fourth Olympiad. It was a hastily organised affair, after Italy pulled out following the eruption of Vesuvius. Oh, and Britain won 56 gold medals.

When we consider the sleek and slick celebration of sport that the Olympic Games have become, it is about far more than physical endeavour and great drama.

We also - alas - tend to think of political manoeuvring; financial burdens and corporate sponsorship; doping scandals and even the odd display of bad sportsmanship.

But wind back 100 years and all these were very much a feature of the 1908 Olympics.

The first recognisably modern Games, the six month long Fourth Olympiad, based around White City in west London, seems to prove that old axiom "the more things change, the more they stay the same".

Bicycle polo is no longer an Olympic event and the tug-of-war seems unlikely to make a return to such an exalted stage. But many of the events enjoyed by our Edwardian forebears seem mighty familiar.

The Italian government has declared a state of emergency at Pompeii in an effort to rescue one of the world's most important cultural treasures.

A Italian cabinet statement says it will appoint a special commissioner for Pompeii, the ancient Roman city buried by an eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bogus tour guides, illegal parking attendants and stray dogs also plague visitors.

2.5 million tourists visit Pompeii each year, making it one of Italy's most popular attractions, and many have expressed shock at the site's decay

"Every year at least 150 square metres of fresco and plaster work are lost for lack of maintenance," says Antonio Irlando, a regional councillor responsible for artistic heritage

"The same goes for stones: at least 3000 pieces every year end up disintegrating," he says.

Two-thirds of the 66 hectare town, home to some 13,000 people in the Roman era, have been uncovered since serious excavations began 260 years ago.

Amongst the hundreds of active or non-active volcanoes, here is a list that we should all know, about the most significant volcanoes on Earth. They are not aligned by size or importance.

1.The most important volcano in North America is Mount Saint Helens, located in Skamania County, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest region of the US, at 96 miles (154 km) south of the city of Seattle and 53 miles (85 km) northeast of Portland, Oregon. This active volcano is located in the Cascade Range and is part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, a segment of the Pacific Ring of Fire that includes over 160 active volcanoes. St Helens is the fourth volcanic peak in the Cascade Range.

Imagine being able to take a step back in time and walk through the streets of ancient Pompeii hours before the eruption of Vesuvius. In April 2008, European researchers will demonstrate that walking through virtual environments is set to be a reality.

“In the virtual environment you have flight simulators, car simulators, but the most natural way of locomotion for humans is walking and this was practically impossible,”

To make virtual walking a reality, the CyberWalk researchers had to address five key issues: providing a surface to walk on, controlling the surface in a way that minimised forces on the user, developing a non-intrusive tracking system, displaying a high-quality visualisation, and ensuring a natural human perception of the virtual environment.

Throne Found Near Ancient Pompeii

December 5, 2007—Remnants of the first known surviving Roman throne have been discovered near Naples, Italy, in lava and ash that buried the city of Herculaneum in the first century, archaeologists said Tuesday.

The finding was exceptional, the scientists said, because furniture of this type was previously only known from artistic depictions, such as a painting (pictured above) from around the same time.

Two legs and part of the back of the wooden throne decorated with ivory bas-reliefs depicting ancient deities were dug out in October and November 2007, the archaeologists said.

The pieces were found 82 feet (25 meters) underground, near Herculaneum's Villa dei Papiri, a first-century country home believed to have been the residence of Julius Caesar's father-in-law.

Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Stabiae were destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (see photos of the volcano today) that killed thousands in 79 A.D.
