Ashtabula County covered bridge will be nation's longest

This is big news, folks. Really big.

Ashtabula County is set to dedicate the nation's longest covered bridge on Tuesday. (Take that, New Hampshire and Vermont.) The intricate wooden span stretches 613 feet, like a lumber yard pieced together above the flowing floor of the Ashtabula River valley.

Workers spent two years prepping the site and connecting beefy boards of Southern yellow pine to replace a deteriorated steel bridge along State Road. The record-breaker cost a few splinters less than $8 million, a bill shouldered by federal, state and local tax dollars.

The result is . . . well, simply massive. "It's going to grab some attention," promised Tim Martin, the county's engineer.

Officials expect covered-bridge fans from across the United States to find their way to Ohio's northeast corner to view the green monster. Parking areas are planned near both ends of the structure.

An old man lies alone in the dark each night, hobbled by an auto accident and haunted by death. To fill the sleepless hours, he thinks up a story about a man who wakes up into an alternate America - one where there was no Sept. 11 and no Iraq War, but one where the controversial 2000 presidential election sparked a kind of blue-state/red-state civil war that has claimed millions of lives.

Auster's latest novel toggles between these two tales - one ruminative, the other fantastic. Both relate to retired book critic August Brill, who is recuperating from a car wreck at his daughter's home in Vermont. Brill has lost his wife to cancer and is also disturbed by the horrific death of his granddaughter's former boyfriend. Brill and his granddaughter, who is also recovering at her mother's house, keep the awful thoughts at bay by watching great films on TV all day.

Overland transport to some of the fifteen forward bases and combat outposts where TF 2/7 operates often takes more than 24 hours of continuous day and night movement. Until this week — when four CH-53 transport helos and four Cobra gunships arrived, the task force had to rely on NATO aircraft...

Camp Bastion, Helmand Province, Afghanistan — This British-built fortress, perched on a plateau in southwestern Afghanistan, is well named. In 2006, the Vermont Energy Partnership released its "Wind Power in Vermont," in which the challenges and benefits of harnessing wind were outlined. This year, the partnership released an updated report on wind power in Vermont. Among its findings: The total wind generating capacity in the United States grew 45 percent in 2007; No new wind power has come online in Vermont since 1997; Only one such project has received a certificate of public good from the state's Public Service Board; wind can only meet about 10 percent of Vermont's total electricity supply.

Georgia finished in the top 10 in four of the six categories we examined (economic climate, growth prospects, labor supply and regulatory environment). Just two other states, Virginia and third-ranked Washington, managed this feat.

Our rankings measure states on six main areas of importance: business costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life. Business costs are weighted the most, but low costs were not enough to keep Louisiana and West Virginia from being the bottom two in our ranking. We look at a total of 32 data points to compile rankings of the six main categories.

President Bush invaded Iraq and ended America’s 13 year war with Saddam with the authorization of Congress, and support of Democrats.

Even before the war started, Gov Howard Dean ran for President on an anti-war theme (in addition to governor of Vermont, doctor, maple syrup king, and Presidential Candidate, he’s secretly been a middle eastern intelligence operative and the only man in the world who could accurately assess the threat from Saddam…or…so people were led to believe).

As soon as Coalition forces crossed the border, Democrats en masse changed their tune, opposed the war like candidate Dean, and they themselves either tested the Presidential campaign waters, or just jumped right in.

“Dissent is patriotic” we were told-even if that dissent wasn’t really based on fact, but on political aspirations and/or frustrations. The debate was key to the 2002 elections, the 2004 elections, the 2006 elections,

The eastern Colorado wind turbine tapped for the Democratic National Convention’s carbon-offset program has one problem: It doesn’t generate any electricity. Convention organizers are now being questioned for their eagerness to market those credits to delegates.

The DNC has contracted with Vermont-based NativeEnergy to offer delegates “Green challenge” carbon offsets to soften the environmental impact of convention travel. That money is then invested in carbon-free “green” energy sources around the country, including a wind turbine installed this year by the Wray School District RD-2. But a Face The State investigation reveals the district’s turbine has never produced marketable energy due to massive equipment malfunctions.

Senate blocks bill to help poor pay energy costs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a rare Saturday session, the U.S. Senate voted against moving forward with legislation that would boost funding for a federal program that helps low- income families pay their cooling and heating bills.

The legislation would nearly double money for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, commonly known as LIHEAP, to $5.1 billion.

Low-income families spend on average about 15 percent of their income on home energy bills, compared with 3.4 percent for all other households.

"At a time when the cost of home heating fuels and electricity are soaring, and when the economy is in a decline, millions of Americans are finding it harder and harder to stay warm in the winter or cool in the summer," said independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who sponsored the legislation.

clipper's remarks: Just three years ago, that trust fund enjoyed a surplus of $10 billion. Even without a tax freeze, the fund is projected to finish 2009 with a deficit of $3 billion. That that could grow as Americans drive less and buy less gas because of higher pump prices.

The consequence is that only about $27 billion in federal money will be available next year to states and local governments for new infrastructure investment even though the current highway act calls for spending $41 billion a year. For many, the solution is to raise rather than suspend or cut federal fuel taxes, which haven't changed since 1993.

The Transportation Construction Coalition, a group of industry companies and unions, said that if Congress does not do something about the shortfall, states will lose about one-third of their road and bridge money in the budget year starting Oct. 1. That would put 485,000 more jobs at risk.

WASHINGTON — The political vision of a summer gas tax holiday died a quick death in Congress, losing to a view that federal excise taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel will have to go up if they go anywhere.

Despite calls from the presidential campaign trail for a Memorial Day-to-Labor Day tax freeze, lawmakers quickly concluded — with a prod from the construction industry — that having $9 billion less to spend on highways could create a pre-election specter of thousands of lost jobs.

The chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Rep. James Oberstar, and the chairman of the highway subcommittee, Rep. Peter DeFazio, presented fellow lawmakers with a list of how many jobs and how much money each state would lose. It ranged from $30 million and 1,000 jobs in Vermont to $664 million and 23,000 jobs in California.

"Because the trust fund is already looking at a looming shortfall, it would have moved project cancellations into the construction season," DeFazio, D-Ore
