Venezuela Exerts It's Right To Make Own Policies

It is not that the relationship between Venezuela and Iran poses a real threat to the United States; it is instead that some in Washington cannot move beyond viewing Latin America as part of its “backyard.” Contrary to the opinions of these policymakers, Venezuela’s foreign policy is made in Caracas – not in Washington.

At the end of his opening statement today Rep.Engel called for a reengagement of U. S. foreign policy with Latin America. We applaud his efforts, but they should be based on mutual respect. We reject the notion that Washington should have veto power over the decision of Latin American countries to engage with the rest of the world.

Other countries in the region, including Brazil and Chile, have also expressed concern.

The BBC's Jeremy McDermott, in Colombia, says Colombia is increasingly isolated in the region, but does not seem to care, just so long as it has US support.

President Uribe's deal with the US has caused concern in the region

Colombian opposition groups have reacted angrily after details of a controversial military deal with the US were made public.

Under the 10-year deal, the US military will not only have access to military bases, but also be able to use major international civilian airports.

US personnel and defence contractors will also enjoy diplomatic immunity.

President Alvaro Uribe says the agreement will help rid Colombia of drugs gangs and left-wing rebel groups.

But leading opposition senator Gustavo Petro, of the left-wing PDA party, said the deal amounted to a virtual US occupation of Colombia.

They reveal that the US military will have access to seven Colombian army, navy and air force bases and also be able to use civilian airports under conditions that have still not been made clear.

The deal has led to a worsening of already strained ties between Colombia and Venezuela.

Swine flu hits Yanomami Indians in the Amazon

CARACAS, Venezuela — Swine flu has appeared among Venezuela's Yanomami Indians, one of the largest isolated indigenous groups in the Amazon, and a doctor said Wednesday that the virus is suspected in seven deaths, including six infants.

The deaths were reported Wednesday by the London-based indigenous rights group Survival International, which warned that if not properly contained the virus could spread and cause more deaths among people who are particularly susceptible to disease due to their limited contact with the outside world.

She said suspected swine flu cases appeared in three Yanomami villages — Mavaca, Platanal and Hatakoa — and a Cuban-trained team of Venezuelan doctors known as Battalion 51 was sent to the area to treat the ill and track possible cases.

Two swine flu cases have been confirmed among the ill, Mirabal said.

There are an estimated 28,000 or more Yanomami living in communities on both sides of the Venezuela-Brazil border.

Peatones que van desde Colombia saltan sobre una pared para cruzar la frontera con Venezuela.

Autoridades colombianas indicaron ayer que tras el cierre fronterizo impuesto en la víspera por Venezuela la situación se mantiene en calma, sin mayores incidentes más allá de la congestión vehicular y las dificultades para los trabajadores que necesitan cruzar de uno a otro país.

Como desde el lunes se conoció la noticia del cierre aplicado por Venezuela, “la congestión vehicular no es tan protuberante, (porque) la gente ya sabía... aunque no sabemos hasta cuándo será esta situación”, indicó telefónicamente el coronel Raúl Riaño, jefe operativo de la policía en Norte de Santander.

Sin embargo, pobladores tanto de Cúcuta como de San Antonio cruzan entre ambos países o por sectores cercanos al puente, que atraviesa el lecho semiseco del río Táchira, o por caminos o veredas rurales.

Maybe in Venezuela or China, but in the United States, no. Explaining to the New York Times, deputy White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said, "We simply decided to stop abiding by the fiction, which is aided and abetted by the mainstream press, that Fox is a traditional news organization."

Yet neither the Times nor most "mainstream" pundits evaluated the claim on its merits. Most pretended not to grasp the White House's point, and then went straight to the aiding and abetting. Many invoked the ghost of Richard Nixon. Why, to criticize Fox, claimed the Washington Post's Ruth Marcus and Charles Krauthammer, was downright "Nixonian."

NPR's Ken Rudin recalled "what Nixon and Agnew did with their enemies list." So did CNN's Anderson Cooper. Rudin subsequently apologized for the "boneheaded" comparison; Cooper didn't.

Oct. 28, 2009 | Nobody should be surprised to see the nation's esteemed celebrity news media align with Fox News against the White House, although even a cynical observer like me found the unanimity mildly shocking. Don't they remember what journalism is supposed to be?

Today, even the fig leaf has been removed. A "journalist," so-called, is anybody paid by a media organization to enact the role on television.

Otherwise, anything goes.

The Obama administration's basic charge against Fox News is undeniably true: The network functions as the propaganda wing of the Republican Party. Fox openly organizes and promotes partisan political events such as April's "Fox News Tea Party." Its coverage of congressional "Town Hall" meetings reflected not a single individual supporting healthcare reform, as documented by Media Matters for America. Not one. Fox portrays every perceived setback for the Obama White House as a "victory" for "Fox Nation."

The system aims to expose every child, regardless of ability or socio-economic background, to music by giving them early and free access to instruments and music education.

"The most important thing inside the system is the music changed totally my life," he said.

"We are building better citizens with music. This is the real reason for the system. Music, yes, but to see your life in a different way. I really feel that I am totally a product of the system in Venezuela."

Venezuela is no tyranny

Dictatorship has returned to Latin America in Honduras, not in the genuine, if imperfect, democracy of Venezuela

Venezuela is far from the "dictatorship which has a facade of democracy" described by General Raúl Baduel, who has been accused of corruption. What kind of tyranny oversees a 70% increase of participation in presidential elections, as Chávez has, or the government holding 13 free and fair elections in 10 years?

What cannot be said of Venezuela is that the right to protest is threatened. This year alone, the opposition have staged dozens of marches free from state harassment. On numerous occasions opponents and marchers have been invited to address the nation from the National Assembly.

Respect for democracy is intrinsic to the particular model being followed by the Chávez government.

Maybe in Honduras we have a serious glimpse of what "democracy" would have been like in Venezuela had its violent attempts to overthrow Chávez been successful?

Leftist Latin American leaders have agreed on using a new intra- regional trading currency, dubbed as Sucre, instead of the US dollar.

A luxurious way of life for wealthy Venezuelan golfers is under threat, with President Hugo Chavez deriding the game as lazy, bourgeois and the antithesis of his Bolivarian Revolution.

Chavez launched his attack on the sport on his weekly TV show, "Hello Mr. President," branding players selfish elitists who annexed acres of prime land while the poor suffered in slums.

"Golf is a bourgeois sport," he spat, citing the use of golf carts as evidence of the laziness of the "little Yankees."

Officials have moved to seize two of Venezuela's prime courses, at Caraballeda and Maracay. However, the move has divided Chavez's local supporters, with many warning of a detrimental impact on surrounding communities.

Gian Carlos Perez, the manager of the Caraballeda course, said the club had the support of the area's communal councils — set up by Chavez.

CARACAS (Dow Jones)--Venezuela moved to seize the Hilton resort on the Caribbean island of Margarita, a swanky beach-side hotel which recently housed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe.

During the summit, Chavez joked that the government could nationalize the hotel. A few years ago, the government seized a Hilton in Caracas, which it rebranded Hotel Alba. Since then, the hotel has become a meeting point for Chavez sympathizers from around the globe.

The Hilton-managed resort is the latest target in a long list of nationalizations. During a decade in power, Chavez has expanded the role of the state by seizing oil companies, coffee-roasters, a bank, food processors, telecoms, utilities, a steel-mill and cement makers.
