Essential tools for Blogger template design (Blogger Template Design Series)

When designing Blogger templates, it's useful to have a set of "tools" available before you begin. So in this installment of the Blogger Template Design series, I have compiled a list of tools I use often when designing themes, from imaging programs to relevant websites and resources you may like to use when designing your own templates.

A test blog

I would strongly advise you to do this using a test blog.

An image manipulation program

This is one of the key tools used when designing Blogger templates. In almost all of the themes I've created, I have needed to use an imaging program to create some aspect of the design.

A basic text editor

Online file hosting

More than one internet browser

clipper's remarks: McCain has changed the GOP into the party outside the mess in DC and ready to clean it up. The liberals played the useful idiot roles by giving McCain the opportunity to go off speech and use them of an example of why hyper partisanship has destroyed DC. We don’t want purity to party, we want solutions to problems. McCain reminded us we can easily solve the aging and dysfunctional services like education, energy, taxes, security, etc.

McCain, through his own riveting personal story of transformation from self centered cocky fly boy to dedicated man of his country, reintroduced himself to America, and reintroduced us to ourselves. The speech was a huge hit. And the comparisons to Obama were striking.

The John McCain I met tonight was incredibly Reaganesque as he reminded us that American pride comes from winning the fight - not from whining for handouts as victims.

We all know those things we have had to fight to gain, those times we were tested and succeeded, were the most memorable of our existence. Trivial and easy equals forgettable.

Obama and the left want to whine and moan about how hard it all is and how we must ask government to take care of us. Very European.

While the left wallow in the challenges facing this nation and wring their hands praying for government solutions, McCain said if government and gridlock gets out of the way we could fix them.

McCain wants to fix government so we can fix our problems. Obama wants us to hand our problems to the idiots in DC to fix, who got us in this mess in the first place.

If the do-nothing Congress would get out of the way we would be building nuclear power plants, drilling for oil here in the US and easing the cost of energy

Bates researchers eye proton therapy for cancer

Researchers at MIT's Bates Linear Accelerator Center have begun a collaboration with Texas-based ProTom International to develop and test a new cancer treatment based on proton therapy.

The fundamental idea is to harness the cell-killing power of protons -- the nuclei of hydrogen atoms -- to knock off cancer cells before the cells kill the patient. Protons are useful especially in cases where it is important to minimize damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. ProTom holds the exclusive U.S. rights for one such proton therapy system initially developed in Russia. The MIT-ProTom team aims to apply their results at ProTom cancer treatment centers beginning in 2010.

"We at Bates are excited to participate in a collaboration to improve proton beam therapy with the objective of more effective cancer treatment worldwide," said Robert Redwine, director of Bates and a professor of physics at MIT.

That's where new social network Raptr, launching today, comes in handy: It helps track the games you play on your computer and on the three major videogame systems -- Microsoft's Xbox 360, Nintendo's Wii, and Sony's PS3 -- and lets your friends know what you're up to. For instance, it could alert them if you log in to Halo 3 and start playing, so they can join in. And then if you get enough kills to move up a skill level in the game, it will tell them that too. It'll also hook in to Facebook or Twitter to send out alerts, which should help make it more useful while Raptr grows.

Founder Dennis Fong says the company will also be announcing some deals soon to bundle Raptr software with some PC games.

In February, Raptr raised $12 million from Accel Partners and the Founders Fund. Fong sold his last social network for gamers -- XFire -- to Viacom in 2006 for $102 million.

Mainstream media
New media
Social media
Personal media
Citizen journalism
Citizen media

Social media is the opposite - it’s media that REQUIRES the participation of others. Twitter, for example, would never have existed without other users in the network. PodCamp as a conference would never have existed if it was only one person who showed up. Take any of the social networks, remove the people, and you have something not useful at all.

I think it’s very useful and I’m with the healthcare exec that said sometimes people don’t care much what the boss thinks of them but they do care about what their peers think. The messy part is dealing with unhealthy competition and ‘fun’ taunting. (JC)

Directional selection favors those individuals who have extreme variations in traits within a population. A useful example can be found in the breeding of the greyhound dog. Early breeders were interested in dog with the greatest speed. They carefully selected from a group of hounds those who ran the fastest. From their offspring, the greyhound breeders again selected those dogs who ran the fastest. By continuing this selection for those dogs who ran faster than most of the hound dog population, they gradually produced a dog who could run up to 64km/h (40mph).
