Goldman Sachs.

The US government, involved in a firefight against the conflagration in the
credit markets, is calling in another crisis-buster from the illustrious
investment bank, this time Goldman's most senior banker to finance industry
 clients, Ken Wilson.

And so with this appointment, the Goldman Sachs diaspora grows a little bit
more influential. It is an old-boy network that has created a revolving door
between the firm and public office, greased by the mountains of money the
company is generating even today, as its peers buckle and fall.

Almost whatever the country, you can find Goldman Sachs veterans in positions
 of pivotal power.

But now Peta - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - is itself on the
receiving end of angry words over its own treatment of animals after it
emerged that the organisation put down 96 per cent of the animals handed
into its American headquarters. Of 2,216 animals taken to its premises in
Norfolk, Virginia, last year, 2,124 were put to sleep - almost six per day.
Homes were found for just seven.

But sometimes, it's important to take a step back and realize that the apps to which we've grown so incredibly accustomed are just barely beginning to register with the general public.

With the Top 10 Consumer Web Apps of 2008, we've tried to select the apps that have burst onto the radar of the everyday user this year - or if not quite, then perhaps they will next year.

This was a year - after years of build up - in which two major events had worldwide impact on the Web. These events focused the world's attention, had more consumers creating more online content, and had more people online searching for information than ever before: the Beijing Olympics and the US Presidential elections. Many of these apps have those events to thank for their exposure and adoption.

Tags: web2.0 socialnetworking

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/top_10_consumer_apps_2008.php</clipSource>

Special Olympics athletes invited into Inaugural Parade

clipped by: masbury
clipper's remarks: Valuing people

Clip Source: www.dailykos.com

...in keeping with its commitment to hold inaugural events that celebrate our common values and reflect the diversity and history of our great nation, President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden's Inaugural Committee officially extended an offer to Special Olympics to march in the 56th Inaugural Parade. Special Olympics athletes, volunteers and supporters will join representatives from across the country and our Armed Forces in the historic parade down Pennsylvania Avenue following President-elect Obama's swearing-in ceremony on the steps of the Capitol.

"I am honored to invite these talented groups and individuals to participate in the Inaugural Parade," said President-elect Obama. "These organizations embody the best of our nation's history, diversity and commitment to service. Vice President-elect Biden and I are proud to have them join us in the parade."
