US swim trials for 2012 Olympics return to Omaha

(AP) OMAHA, Neb. - The U.S. Olympic swimming trials will return to Omaha in 2012, with a temporary pool again being set up inside the Qwest Center.

USA Swimming made the announcement on Thursday. The trials to choose the U.S. team for the London Games will be held June 25-July 2.

The 2008 trials were held at the Qwest Center for the first time, averaging more than 12,000 fans each night over eight days. Nine world records were set in the temporary 50-meter competition pool.

A warmup pool will also be installed inside the 17,000-seat Qwest Center in downtown Omaha. The adjacent convention center will again host a 100,000-square-foot sponsor and fan experience area.

Silvio Berlusconi yesterday faced calls to resign from opposition leaders after a judge ruled that David Mills, husband of the Olympics minister Tessa Jowell, lied at two corruption trials to protect the Italian Prime Minister.

The judges released their 400-page reasoning three months after Mills was sentenced to four and a half years.

They say Mills gave false testimony in two 1990s trials to shield Berlusconi and his Fininvest holding company from charges relating to the purchase of US film rights, as well was to protect his own economic interests.

Prosecutors allege that Berlusconi ordered payments to Mills in exchange for the testimony.

Mills' lawyer Federico Cecconi said he did not agree with the February verdict but declined comment on the justification until he has read it.

Before entering politics, Berlusconi founded the Mediaset media empire, which is controlled by his family through Fininvest.

Farrah Fawcett believed she had been cured, she reveals in documentary

FARRAH FAWCETT has revealed she underwent painful experimental cancer treatment in Germany and believed she had been cured after declining conventional surgery.

But during filming of a long-awaited documentary about her two-and-a-half-year battle with the disease, doctors told her that despite six trips to private clinics, the cancer had spread to her liver.

At one point in Farrah's Story, which was screened in the US on Friday, the 62-year-old is heard sobbing: 'I thought I would be cured.'

The documentary, which Miss Fawcett had sold to America's NBC network for a reported $1.5million, was filmed and narrated by her best friend Alana Stewart, Rod Stewart's ex-wife.

Preliminary ratings showed Farrah's Story was NBC's most-watched program in its Friday night-time slot in more than a year, excluding ratings from the Olympics.

But now Peta - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - is itself on the receiving end of angry words over its own treatment of animals after it emerged that the organisation put down 96 per cent of the animals handed into its American headquarters. Of 2,216 animals taken to its premises in Norfolk, Virginia, last year, 2,124 were put to sleep - almost six per day. Homes were found for just seven.

clipper's remarks: All the bruhaha around Obama's special olypmics comment is ridiculous. You know he didn't mean to disrespect them and you know he didn't mean it the way it came out. It was a mistake and shouldn't have been said, but come on.

Palin's comment that she hopes it does "not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community" is a cheap shot and stupid. She's knows damn well that's not the case and to suggest otherwise about the president of the united states is shameful.

FACIAL expressions of emotion are innate, not learned, according to new research that compared the facial expressions of sighted and blind athletes as they weathered defeat.

In the first study of its kind, researchers in the US say they have demonstrated that facial expressions conveying emotion are hard-wired into our genes, not learned through observation.

Even the so-called "social smile" — displayed stoically by the silver medallist at the medal ceremony, for example — is instinctive, with sighted and blind athletes using the same facial muscle movements to deliver a forced smile in difficult circumstances.

Using more than 4800 photographs of athletes from 23 countries, the researchers compared the facial expressions of sighted and blind judo athletes who took part in the 2004 summer Olympics and Paralympic Games.
