A "horny hangover" is somewhat clumsily defined in the Urban Dictionary as:

"The mysterious and overwhelming urge to have sex the day after a night of hard drinking, despite being completely dehydrated and having a massive headache."

It has yet to receive mention in the Merriam-Webster Unabridged, a lamentable omission in my view considering they have a million words in there like "eucirripedia" that nobody ever uses. Not every guy gets the hangover hornies, but enough do that it's achieved something akin to mythic status. My wife never really believed they existed until one morning after a party she awoke to find me looking at her with a knowing smile and a glint in my bloodshot eye.

Rain gardens are depressed landscaped areas planted with wild flowers and other native vegetation that allows rainwater runoff from impervious urban areas like roofs, driveways, and walkways to be soaked up or absorbed. After a storm, rain garden can keep a few inches of water for a couple of hours and slowly filters it into the ground rather than letting it run off the drainage. Rain gardens can get 30% more water soak into the ground than conventional lawn garden.

Is our increasingly urban lifestyle leading us to lose touch with the realities of life and death? World famous wildlife communicator Sir David Attenborough believes it is.

"There's no doubt that we are becoming increasingly divorced from the natural world, there are lots of people who spend their lives in cities and never see a wild thing unless it's a pigeon or maybe a rat, so you lose touch, you lose touch with the rhythms of the natural world, you lose touch with the realities of the natural world," he said.

"I don't want to get too pretentious but you lose touch with both life and death, with both how life is created and how death is inevitable.

"If you're brought up in the countryside - and I wasn't - but if you were you would know those things on a daily basis, you see life and death in the farm yard."

Sir David also cites the increasing of the world's population as a big factor in the decreasing size of the natural world.

One of the most interesting questions about the health care overhaul now moving through Congress is how it would affect young adults. That legislation would force most or all Americans to purchase health insurance (an "individual mandate") and would impose price controls on health insurance ("community rating") that would limit insurers' ability to offer lower premiums to low-risk enrollees.

The irony is that Barack Obama won the presidency with 66 percent of the vote among adults aged 18 to 29. That's a larger share than any presidential candidate has won in decades. Yet his health care overhaul could impose its greatest burdens on young adults.

Those provisions would drive premiums down for 55-year-olds but would drive them up for 25-year-olds—who are then implicitly subsidizing older adults. According to the Urban Institute, many young people could see their premiums double, whereas premiums for older adults could be cut in half.

Gay marriage issue can wait, say Referendum 71 partisans

Those who opposed each other on Referendum 71 agree on one thing: Don't look for gay marriage on a ballot in 2010.

And don't expect the Legislature to make it legal or a judge to decide the issue.

Leaders on both sides say it's too soon to revisit the issue.

Proponents know they must build support in those rural areas before a marriage measure gets pushed to a statewide vote. As of Friday, voters in 29 counties were rejecting the measure — and in some places, by more than 70 percent

Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, introduced a bill legalizing marriage for same-sex couples last January. He said he's not expecting it to receive a hearing in 2010.

“The closeness of the results indicates we have a lot of work to do before we move marriage legislatively or on the ballot,” said. Murray, who authored the law put before voters.

today the word jaywalking is often used as a sort of blanket justification for the dominating presence of cars on city streets. It also reflects a social bias against those people not in cars. (Note this comment in a Federal Highway Administration report: "Still, almost no one can avoid occasional pedestrian status," as if they were discussing exposure to a venereal disease.)

Looking at any number of big-city dailies over the last few weeks, one might reasonably surmise that we are in the middle of a new public-health epidemic with an old name: jaywalking.
These accounts—which are typically combined with grim statistics on pedestrian deaths and injuries, but no deeper analysis—could well leave casual readers with the impression that jaywalking is the single greatest risk to the urban pedestrian, that pedestrians wantonly solicit injuries and death with their depraved behavior, and that properly corralling pedestrians could solve all our traffic safety problems.
All of which is wrong.
the facts simply do not support the idea that jaywalking is the greatest danger pedestrians face, and that drivers should be let off the hook.
police, who largely tend to be in vehicles, often misinterpret such subtleties or exhibit a pronounced pro-driver bias
it's not uncommon to hear statements like he "came out of nowhere," when in fact the pedestrian was crossing legally

Dozens of baby girls in southern China have reportedly been taken from parents who broke family-planning laws, and then sold for adoption overseas.

An investigation by the state-owned Southern Metropolis News found that about 80 girls in one county had been sold for $3,000 (£1,800) to foreigners.

The babies were taken when the parents could not pay the steep fines imposed for having too many children.

Local officials may have forged papers to complete the deals, the report said.

Parents in rural areas are allowed two children, unlike urban dwellers who are allowed one.

But if they have more than that, they face a fine of about $3,000 -several times many farmers’ annual income.

Nearly 80 baby girls in a county in Guizhou province, in the south of the country, were confiscated from their families when their parents could not or would not pay the fine, Southern Metropolis News said.

The girls were taken into orphanages and sold to couples from the United States and a number of European countries
