Britons too ugly for dating website

Britons are among the ugliest people in the world, according to a dating website that says it only allows "beautiful people" to join.

Fewer than one in eight British men and just three in 20 women who have applied to BeautifulPeople.com have been accepted, an emailed statement from the website showed.

Existing members of the "elite dating site" rate how attractive potential members are over a 48 hour period, after applicants upload a recent photo and personal profile.

Swedish men have proved the most successful, with 65 per cent being accepted, while Norwegian women are considered the most beautiful with 76 per cent accepted, the website said.

The way that BeautifulPeople.com accepts new members is simple. A potential member applies with a photo and a brief profile. Over 48 hours, existing members of the opposite sex vote whether or not to admit them, the site said.

Options are: "Yes definitely," "Hmm yes, OK" "Hmm no, not really" and "No definitely not."

Sharon Osbourne has apologized for saying that Britain's Got Talent runner-up Susan Boyle was hit by "the ugly stick."

Last month, Osbourne, 57, appeared on Sirius XM Radio's The Opie & Anthony Show and was asked about Boyle. She cracked, "You just want to say God bless and here's a Gillette razor."

But on her Twitter page this week, Osbourne changed her tune.

"Susan Boyle is a lovely gracious woman and I took advantage of that by poking fun at her," she wrote. "I would never want to be responsible for hurting Susan and I must apologize for getting a cheap laugh at her expense."

I put a pic of my little winged vampire critter up on Flickr and got a lot of good feedback—and a couple remarks that contained the phrase, “too much time on your hands.”

Man, that’s a dismissal that makes me want to slap some sense into the people who say it. It’s a thoughtless and immensely cruel way of negating the pleasure that the subject has derived from following her passions. It takes in the sweep of someone’s gnarly physical meditation and grinds it into paste.

Wind turbines can be as loud as an airliner, as ugly as an oil derrick and as damaging to the environment as a clear-cut, according to members of the Citizens Task Force on Wind Power. They also emit a jaw-rattling hum and obnoxious knocking noises that no one would want to live near, according to Steve Thurston, co-chairman of the task force.

“These things make people sick,” he said after a press conference Monday where he and several others spent an hour criticizing wind energy. “The noise they make drives people crazy.”

Uh, THIS is what we were waiting for? The Leighton Meester music video for “Somebody to Love” has been released. The weird dude in it is Robin Thicke. What’s surprising about this song is how bad it is. I mean, will they just release anything? Lyrically, it’s about only four sentences that get repeated ad nauseum. Meester sings about wanting love while the music video makes her look like a Euro Trash Call Girl. The styling for this video is mostly really horrible. It takes some real, dedicated effort to make someone like Meester look like an ugly Tranny. Leighton Meester, you are in dire need of help, girl.

Q. Why do economies recover?

A. They recover because bad investments made during the bubble are liquidated, valuable capital is no longer being wasted on them, new capital is formed from savings, and profitable enterprises attract new capital to expand. Low real interest rates caused by increased savings encourage borrowing, manufacturers use the capital to make new machines, producers of consumer goods buy them, cash goes through the system, consumers see things are getting better, more consumer goods are produced, and consumers buy them. It has to happen this way or the recovery will fail.

The difficult part of a recovery is ugly. Bankrupt firms need to fail so that valuable capital resources are not wasted on their continuing activities. This means that unemployment rises (10.2% now) and business bankruptcies are high. Trillions of dollars of asset values are wiped out.

In order to understand the present state of the U.S. economy you have to understand that there are two things happening at once. For the most part they are in conflict with each other, in that one track can negatively impact the other.

Here are some of the economic data that have come out this week, in no particular order:

PositiveNegative The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index rose 3.1 points to 55.7, the third straight month of growth and the highest level since April 2006. A reading above 50 indicates expansion for the sector.Current-dollar personal income decreased $15.5 billion (0.5 percent) in the third quarter, in contrast to an increase of $19.1 billion (0.6 percent) in the second.

The ISM's employment index rose for the first time in 15 months as manufacturers sought to recall workers or enlist temporary help.

Consumer confidence fell to 47.7 in October, from 53.4 in September.
