A new online sports news and entertainment site, OPEN Sports, has signed a multiyear deal to make legendary NFL quarterback John Elway its spokesman for the site's fantasy-football products

As part of the deal, Elway will have a blog, predict winners of each NFL game

OPEN Sports promotes itself as being different from traditional sports sites because it gathers news and opinions from many outlets. So if you follow the Florida Gators, you can see what was written by The Associated Press as well as the Gainesville news outlets.

Nov. 14--Three Alaska Native firms that heavily invested in the struggling wireless telecommunications industry will get their money back under an agreement announced Wednesday with partner AT&T Wireless.

Sealaska Corp., Doyon Ltd. and Arctic Slope Regional Corp. and other smaller investors in Anchorage-based Alaska Native Wireless will receive $233 million, according to AT&T Wireless' most recent quarterly financial filing with securities regulators.

According to industry news outlets today, airlines could lose over 5.2 Billion US$ in 2008. What could this news mean for airfares, travellers and vacation hotspots? Price wars anyone?

Fuel Price is a Major Factor

The International Air Transport Association announced today that a revised financial forecast reports that the global airline industry could show losses of over 5 Billion US Dollars in 2008.

Industry analysts are reporting that although the price-per-barrel of oil has shown some stabilization over the past several months, the year-to-date average price of a barrel of oil is over 40$ higher than the average price for 2007.

Fuel prices continue to take an ever increasing larger piece of the airline industries operating expenses, up to 36% of total operating costs in 2008, up from just 12% in 2002.

Looks like McCain is tired of the wall-to-wall anti-Palin rhetoric of CNN:

According to CNN, Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) pulled out of a scheduled interview with the network after a segment with Campbell Brown and a top McCain spokesman Monday night in which Brown asked for examples of a foreign-policy decision made by Republican vice president pick Sarah Palin.

McCain was scheduled to appear on Larry King Live, but CNN's Wolf Blitzer said Tuesday that the campaign told the news network they thought Brown's interview with spokesman Tucker Bounds was "over the line."

CNN said it disagreed and it is committed to covering both sides of issues.

Yep, Obama's side and Biden's side.

“There was a time when the only definition (of news) is whatever you read or see on TV or in the newspaper,” Mike Fancher, editor-at-large for The Seattle Times, said at a community forum held Tuesday at The News Tribune. That was when TV and newspapers were the news gatekeepers.

“Print (journalism) is like a term paper,” Brewster said at the forum. “A reporter does his research and presents conclusions.

“But online journalism is much more like a conversation: ‘I’ve found out some things and here they are. What do you think?’ Or: ‘What can you add?’”

He said that truth-seeking in online journalism is more conversational and collaborative. And because the exchange of information is public, in the thread of comments that follows the original report, it can “breed greater confidence in the open-mindedness of the journalism.”

Now that the dust has settled on both parties' vice presidential picks, it's time to take a look at how the media treated Joe Biden and Sarah Palin in the crucial early hours after they were announced as running mates.

Looking at the transcripts of CNN, FNC, and MSNBC during the two "primetime" hours of the day John McCain and Barack Obama announced their running mates, a trend becomes quite clear: The media were much more likely to report negative information about the Alaskan Palin than the Delawarean Biden.

Palin has a special kind of ethics. I call it "wink wink" ethics. Here's how it works (not using her exact quotes but you get the idea):

To Monegan when he was commissioner of public safety-- "It's too bad troopers like my former brother- in- law work for the State (wink wink)."

To the news media today: "We ask that you respect our privacy. The boy's first name is Levi (wink wink)."

Palin almost certainly gave the news media enough information to track poor Levi down. How many 18 to 25 year-olds named Levi live in Wasilla or the broader Anchorage area?

I wonder if right now, thanks to Palin's wink wink, there may be a frenzied news media search for every young man in this area who is named Levi, perhaps kind of like a bounty hunt.

Why would Palin do this? Perhaps so the news media would expose the family and place them under overwhelming scrutiny and pressure. This would remove any privacy from the boy's decision about marriage.

Today, many of us are glued to both the TV and the web to keep track of the ongoing coverage of the storm. Beyond just traditional media outlets, there are also a number of other resources on the social web that you can use to keep up-to-date with Gustav news. Social networks, blogs, live news video, and, of course, Twitter, are all being used for up-the-minute coverage. In fact, Twitter even had a breakthrough moment on CNN as reporter Rick Sanchez referred to it on air and used it to gather news.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that the state’s leading Republicans are expressing shock and bewilderment over John McCain’s selection of their governor as his running mate:

State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to give her the news.

“She’s not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?” said Green, a Republican from Palin’s hometown of Wasilla. “Look at what she’s done to this state. What would she do to the nation?” […]

State House Speaker John Harris, a Republican from Valdez, was astonished at the news. He didn’t want to get into the issue of her qualifications.

“She’s old enough,” Harris said. “She’s a U.S. citizen.”
