The cingulate cortex is a part of the frontal lobe that is known to be involved with conflict monitoring, pain and emotion, while Microsoft Word is a clumsy but ubiquitous word processing package that has an annoying habit of auto-correcting things you don't want to be auto-corrected.

For example, try typing the words 'cingulate cortex' into Word and see what happens. It changes it to 'cingulated cortex', adding an annoying 'd' onto the end of the first word.

While the use of the term 'cingulate cortex' stretches back to at least the beginning of the 20th century, the term 'cingulated cortex' barely appears, until Microsoft Word's autocorrection tool arrives on the scene.

Microsoft Word, it seems, is slowly changing the brain.

Without further ado, I have named the disorder Bell's Frontal Nomenclature Hypertrophy Syndrome and demand that it be included in the diagnostic manuals.

You’re writing an email to invite a friend to meet at a local San Francisco restaurant that neither of you has been to. You’d like to include a map. Today, this involves the disjointed tasks of message composition on a web-mail service, mapping the address on a map site, searching for reviews on the restaurant on a search engine, and finally copying all links into the message being composed. This familiar sequence is an awful lot of clicking, typing, searching, copying, and pasting in order to do a very simple task. And you haven’t even really sent a map or useful reviews—only links to them.

Today we’re announcing the launch of Ubiquity, a Mozilla Labs experiment into connecting the Web with language in an attempt to find new user interfaces that could make it possible for everyone to do common Web tasks more quickly and easily.

Yes. You have to upgrade to Platinum ($1000/year), then the "custom domain" option in your settings will be activated. See wiki.brutsch.com for a working example.

Back when I was planning my wedding, I had a list of wedding songs in mind, but the problem was that I couldn't remember any of the artist names or song titles. So I started typing into the Google search box parts of the lyrics that I did remember -- and like magic, I saw suggestions with the artist name and song titles that I wanted! (I was opted-in to the keyword suggestions Google Labs experiment at the time). At that moment, I was so proud to be working on Google Suggest, a search feature that provides real-time suggestions while you search.

A tool that automatically steals IDs of non-encrypted sessions and breaks into Google Mail accounts has been presented at the Defcon hackers’ conference in Las Vegas.

Last week Google introduced a new feature in Gmail that allows users to permanently switch on SSL and use it for every action involving Gmail, and not only, authentication. users who did not turn it on now have a serious reason to do so as Mike Perry, the reverse engineer from San Francisco who developed the tool is planning to release it in two weeks.

If you are logging in to your Gmail account from different locations and you would like to benefit from this option only when you are using unsecured networks, you can force it by manually typing https://mail.google.com before you log in. This will access the SSL version of Gmail and it will be persistent over your entire session and not only during authentication.

for a 7820N, I tried every trick, and the only one that works is this one, as Waterboss writes but here it is a little dressed up:

For MFC-7820N (using TN-350) displaying 'Toner Life End':
1. open front cover
2. while front cover is open and machine is on, push "options"
3. push start
4. (quickly) type in '1' then '0' (typing in "10") . if you are not quick enough in this step, start from the beginning
5. the machine says 'accepted'

6. toner goes and goes

it's odd that I had this problem shortly after using a replacement toner cartridge (real Brother) but a new 2nd party drum.. seems like Brother cuts up the toner too quickly because it works fine after this

Installation

Download Google Earth from the Google Earth website.
The linux version will be automatically chosen when downloading from Ubuntu.

Open a terminal from Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal.

cd into the directory where you saved Google Earth. For example, if you saved it to the Desktop type:

 cd ~/Desktop

Make it executable by typing:

 chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin

Run the installer by typing:

 sudo ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin

Leave the default options and click Begin Install.

Let’s say you’re talking on the phone to someone. They are having difficulty setting a filter in their email program. They have called you for help.

You can get frustrated trying to explain what to do over the phone…you can spend 15 minutes typing detailed instructions by email…or you can send them a short video that shows them exactly what to do.

Of the three, sending a video is the no-brainer best option. You simply record yourself demonstrating exactly what to do on your own screen…and then the other person can just watch the video and duplicate what you’ve done. Problem solved.

Jing is a great “quick and dirty” solution for producing simple video tutorials in a hurry. Does it replace traditional screen recording software? No, not even close…but it’s not supposed to. It’s just there for those moments when you need to make a video screen demonstration…but don’t have a lot of time to spare.

PlayStation 3 Keypad to Bring Thumb Typing to PS3

Sony has just announced a keypad peripheral that sits on top of a DualShock 3 and SIXAXIS to allow QWERTY typing (it also appears to have its own Bluetooth connection and power source). A lot like the keypad Microsoft released a while back for the 360, it also has a touchpad for mouse support as well (that could even be used in some games). The pad will come in 8 different configurations/languages for PAL regions this November and there's no US release announcement yet.
