Lacing boards are a great way for children to develop basic motor skills, and keep them quiet for a little while! I'm thinking these would be a perfect activity for my little guy while his big brother is in school. They can be pretty expensive, so we decided to make our own (of course!).

Children's Lacing Cards Tutorial

Here's what you'll need:

*Craft foam
*Scissors
*Pen
*Shape to trace
*1/4" hole punch

*Shoelace for lacing

1. We started with one piece of foam sheet from a local craft store. It was only 99 cents and large enough to make four or five lacing shapes.

2. Trace a shape on the foam with a pen. Try using some cute clip art. We used a cute Japanese coaster as our pattern. Cut it out. We used a smaller hole punch on this hedgehog to give him an eye.

3. Use hole punch to punch holes around the edge of the shape. You may choose to mark the holes evenly with a ruler before starting, but it's not necessary.

4. Add your favorite shoelace--that's it!

I made this heart shaped pillow out of old pillow shams. They were already in the quilted pattern, so I just cut 2 hearts from a pattern and sewed matching buttons on the back. The words were iron on stencils that I used a pen to make permanent. I hand sewed the strips of fabric using big stitches and finished it by stuffing slightly and buttons on the corners. After the embellishments were done, I machine straight stitched around the outside (I did not want the seam on the inside, I wanted it to show), leaving approx. 1/4 inch seam allowance. And I then hand stitched the seam allowance closed with the same big stitches.

How to make Rounded Corners in Photoshop Tutorial

select the rounded rectangle tool.

make sure your rectangle tool is on PATHS not shape or fill pixels.

you can change your radius to any size. the example photo is 20 px.

draw out your path. make sure to leave an even space on all 4 sides.

then just right click with either direct select or path select arrows, and make selection.

a tiny window will pop up asking if you want to feather and make new selection. if you feather you may come out with a cool effect

but unless you want that, just leave it at 0, then press ok.

once your path is selected, inverse it. shift + ctrl + i or select > inverse.

create a new layer above that and erase, OR use your fill bucket to fill it with another color of your choice...

note: if you decide not to create a new layer over your photo, just remember that you wont be able to edit the erasing or fill bucket actions once you've made changes.

and you're done!

Image Transfers with the Blender Pen

This is a transfer process using photocopies and a blender pen. I use a Chartpak Blender Pen.

PROCEDURE:
Place photocopy toner side down on the receptor surface. You can lightly tape it in place if there are margins around the area to be transferred. Apply blender pen to the back of the photocopy using repeated, overlapping strokes until the image is visible through the back of the photocopy. Burnish this area and then move onto another section if you are transferring a large image. You can check under a corner to see how transfer is taking, being careful not to move or shift the photocopy. If you are not satisfied with the results re-apply more solvent from the blender pen and burnish again until transfer is completed. Have fun

Fast stripe patterns in Photoshop

Tutorial: Fast stripe patterns in Photoshop

1) Open a new 200px x 200px at 72dpi (you are not going to print it!) transparent document

Pick the 2 colours which you wish to use as background and foreground colours – for my example I’m using purple & bright pink.

3) Press G to select the Gradient Tool, Foreground to Background, and in the options bar select the Linear Gradient.

Now, holding down the Shift Key (to keep to a straight line, pull your gradient from left to right.(this will give you horizontal stripes, for vertical stripe pattern, holding down the shift key, pull your gradient from top to bottom & carry on from 5)

5) Now select Filter > Distort > Wave and make sure your settings are as in the illustration:

· Number of Generators not important, mine is 999

· Wavelength 35 and 35 (Tip: set the Maximum one first)

· Amplitude: Unimportant

· Scale: Unimportant

· Type: Square is checked

· Undefined Areas: Repeat Edge Pixels checked

Edit > Define pattern

Disappearing 9 Patch Tutorial

The Disappearing 9 Patch block is great. Very easy to make, but looks quite impressive when done! I first discovered it in a book called "Magic Pillows, Hidden Quilts" by Karin Hellaby. I've since seen it on line in various places and using different names. Here's a little tutorial on how to make a scrappy version.

Firstly - select and stitch together 9 squares. For maximum contrast try and get 5 darker prints and 4 lighter prints arranged with the darker prints as the X of the 9 patch.

Square this up, then cut through the block both vertically and horizontally. (My starting squares were 4", so I squared up to 11", then cut to make each new block 5.5".)

Turn blocks to rearrange pattern.

his is my finished incuabtor sized quilt which used 3 of the original 9 patch blocks. Easy peasey!!
