I am now preparing a series of articles where I’ll show you how to plant hundreds of tulips in a landscape bed without breaking your back. But before we get all happy in the dirt, here is a common misconception associated with Holland’s greatest export that I thought I’d share with you.

Are Tulips Perennial?

Perennial means, “returns every year,” as opposed to annual, which means it lives one year and dies.
In truth, tulips are NOT good perennializers, meaning they don’t grow well the second year after being planted. In fact, many of the great minds in the Tulip world will tell you to dig up your tulip bulbs each year in the late spring and throw them away!

After 6 days, the cut flowers at left, placed in tap water with an aspirin, have wilted. The flowers on the right still look fresh in water amended with the Brooklyn Botanical Garden homemade vase water additive.

Vase Water Demystified
Aspirin, vitamin pills, vinegar, and pennies are just a few of the more common folklore additives used unsuccessfully to preserve flowers. What works are ingredients that prohibit bacteria, feed the flower, and encourage water uptake. Commercial flower preservatives contain a blend of these ingredients that can extend the life of cut blooms by days. The Brooklyn Botanical Garden recommends a homemade mixture that works as well as the commercial variety. Mix 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon bleach, and 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice in a quart of warm water. Warm water is important because it’s more easily absorbed. However, cold weather blooms, such as tulips, thrive in cold vase water.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - This city's famed marijuana bars have weathered many challenges over the years and are still smoking. But now they face an unwelcome blast of fresh air: On July 1, the Netherlands will be one of the last European countries to ban smoking in bars and restaurants in compliance with EU law.

The Health Ministry says the ban will apply to cafes that sell marijuana, known as coffee shops. But this being Holland, which for centuries has experimented with social liberalism, there's a loophole: The ban covers tobacco but not marijuana, which is technically illegal anyway.

But that still leaves coffee shops and their customers in a bind. Dutch and other European marijuana users traditionally smoke pot in fat, cone-shaped joints mixed with tobacco.

"It's the world upside down: In other countries they look for the marijuana in the cigarette. Here they look for the cigarette in the marijuana," said Jason den Enting, manager of coffee shop Dampkring.

Pretty "vases"

For this centerpiece, you'll need:
• 5 or more double-tall shot glasses (to act as vases)
• scrapbook paper
• stapler

• tulips or other flowers

Cut scrapbook paper into approximately 5x7" strips. The tube will need to slide over the shot glass, so make sure the size works for you before cutting! If the shot glass is too wide, you may need to cut wider sheets of paper.

Roll the paper into a tube (using the shorter dimension as your height) and stable the ends of the paper together to secure.

Fill the shot glasses 1/2 way with water, then place them in an evenly spaced row down the center of your table. Slide the paper tubes over the shot glassses, insert the flower stems, and done!

Grape Hyacinths do well from zone 3 to zone 9, so they are a viable option for most of us. They are also one of the plants to choose if deer are a problem in your area. Planted at the bases of shrubs, or left to naturalize under trees, they can have a stunning effect. They make good companions to Daffodils, Tulips, alyssum, candytuft, and just about any other spring plant you can think of, adding a beautiful shade of blue that is otherwise hard to come by at that time of year. They will tolerate most soils, except areas that don't drain well. They have grass-like, gracefully arching leaves, and make good border and container plants. They will do well in full sun to part shade.
