Unbeknownst to the subjects, the symbols indicated whether they would lose or gain £1 or break even if they accepted the gamble.

Surprisingly, subjects got better at predicting whether they would win or not, eventually plateauing at slightly above chance, strong evidence that volunteers do not consciously notice the symbols but are affected by them nonetheless.

Clip Source: www.newscientist.com

Next time you’re at a blackjack table trying to decide whether to hold or hit, just trust your gut. If, by chance, you've received a message from a "friend" in the last few days saying that you've been caught on tape, it's not true. Unless you're Paris Hilton.

The worm, called Koobface, turns compromised computers into "zombie" machines that can be used in other types of online attacks. The malicious software may also include keylogger software, which can record a computer user's keystrokes -- and potentially grab passwords when they are entered on a computer.

Alexander Gostev, senior virus analyst at computer security firm Kaspersky Lab, said in a statement that this type of attack could be a successful one for hackers. "Users are very trusting of messages left by 'friends' on social networking sites. So the likelihood of a user clicking on a link like this is very high," he said.

hiding from the pain and anger and fear also insulated me from the compliments
and positive things. I knew, all too well, that I had flaws… so compliments
seemed to be dishonest ways of insulting me. Love and joy could lure me into
being trusting which could open me up to the things I'd spent so much time
escaping. And then I could be betrayed and hurt. So I hid from all of it. And
like so many men, by the time I'd grown old enough to understand what I had
done... the walls built so high and strong to protect me, and the world around
me; the only release was more than society would accept. I couldn't break down
and cry and I couldn't scream my curses to an empty sky.

I am not selfish and do not want anyone to suffer, I do what I can, for whom I can, whenever the need arises. I will continue to show my concern, and be of help. I will also continue to find the right people who believe that "together, "we can" make a difference in the world we live in". (Bush's gravest flaw is that he's a dreadful judge of character, stubbornly trusting undeserving men, from Iraqi schemer Ahmed Chalabi, through the incompetent Alberto Gonzales, to Vladimir Putin, who played Bush for a fool.) French president Nicolas Sarkozy, well-intentioned and inadequate [..]

The Putin regime was perfectly willing to let Monsieur le President return to Paris with a signed piece of paper. The Russians have drawn the lesson from Western efforts to negotiate with Iran and other rogue states that Europe can be narcotized with empty agreements and nebulous promises and that Europe has become a continent of bureaucrats who much prefer paperwork to reality. And there are no penalties when the agreements prove worthless.

Clip Source: www.realclearpolitics.com

A specter is haunting Europe-the specter of Putinism. Confronted by a masterful Russian leader without living peer in brilliance or ruthlessness, the continent sorely lacks leadership and a sense of common purpose. In their muddled reactions to the Kremlin's invasion of Georgia, European states revealed a gap in perceptions that threatens to deepen: Those who suffered under the Soviet yoke sense the return of an existential threat, while those who thrived under the Pax Americana are merely annoyed at being disturbed. As Russian troops and their mercenary auxiliaries savaged a free, democratic country yearning Westward, the world got another lesson in how ineffectual Europe is in a crisis without American leadership.

The United States performed no better. Scorned for his aggressive behavior in the past, President Bush spent the first crucial days of the Georgia crisis as a bewildered observer reluctant to recognize the gravity of the problem.

Tags: georgia, president bush, president sarkozy, putin

<clipSource>http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/08/the_end_of_the_fairy_tale.html</clipSource>

High childhood IQ linked to antitraditional attitudes in adults

clipped by: enbar
clipper's remarks: A study of a large representative sample of the UK population shows that high childhood IQ is correlated with antitraditional (i.e., liberal, mostly) attitudes in adults (described as "antiracist, pro-working women, socially liberal," and democratic). This correlation is independent of gender, occupation and social class. Statistical analyses identified a general latent trait underlying attitudes that are antiracist, pro-working women, socially liberal, and trusting in the democratic political system. There was a strong association between higher g at age 10 and more liberal and antitraditional attitudes at age 30; this association was mediated partly via educational qualifications, but not at all via occupational social class. Very similar results were obtained for men and women. People in less professional occupations—and whose parents had been in less professional occupations—were less trusting of the democratic political system.

Tags: psychology, research, politics, children, science, intelligence, iq

<clipSource>http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/119410400/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0</clipSource>

Can We Really Risk Trusting Obama?

clipped by: BartendingBear
clipper's remarks: I don't, but...

Clip Source: www.salon.com

<clipSource>http://www.salon.com/comics/tomo/2008/08/19/tomo/</clipSource>

Faith

clipped by: Carolinenz

Clip Source: www.explorefaith.org

Faith is not the state of believing but the

moment, to be fully conscious in this moment, and to be fully responsible
in this moment. One's essential courage to be comes from the individual's
being fully informed and aware about the world and oneself. Being informed
becomes the basis of our decision-making, for we know that we must somehow
be responsible for how we are in the world and with ourselves.

To be fully human is to find a way
to be an individual in participation with the various systems of social
organizations in which we live. Essentially, however, the true core of
ourselves comes from the experience of being our unique individual self
and knowing that the core of this is transcendent of our ego-conscious
orientation. It encounters us and demands that we become truly whole and
find a way to manifest this in our daily lives in a loving way.

<clipSource>http://www.explorefaith.org/steppingstones_Jung.htm</clipSource>

Complex decision? Don't sleep on it

clipped by: Silkweaver
clipper's remarks: Since its publication two years ago by a Dutch research team in the journal Science, the earlier finding had been used to encourage decision-makers to make "snap" decisions (for example, in the best-selling book Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell) or to leave complex choices to the powers of unconscious thought ("Sleep on it", Dijksterhuis et al., Science, 2006).

But in the new study, to be published in The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, scientists ran four experiments in which participants were presented with complex decisions and asked to choose the best option immediately ("blink"), after a period of conscious deliberation ("think"), or after a period of distraction ("sleep on it"), which is claimed to encourage "unconscious thought processes".

In all experiments, there was some evidence that conscious deliberation can lead to better choices and little evidence for superiority of choices made "unconsciously".

Clip Source: www.physorg.com

Neither snap judgements nor sleeping on a problem are any better than conscious thinking for making complex decisions, according to new research.

The finding debunks a controversial 2006 research result asserting that unconscious thought is superior for complex decisions, such as buying a house or car.

If anything, the new study suggests that conscious thought leads to better choices.

"Claims that we can make superior 'snap' decisions by trusting intuition or through the 'power' of unconscious thought have received a great deal of attention in the media," says University of New South Wales psychologist, Dr Ben Newell, lead author of the new study.

"At best, these sorts of headlines are misleading," says Dr Newell. "At worst, they're outright dangerous. In stark contrast to claims made by the Dutch research team and in the media, we found very little evidence of the superiority of unconscious thought for complex decisions.
