ATLANTA - They give them nicknames, worry when they signal for help and sometimes even treat them like a trusted pet.

A new study shows how deeply some Roomba owners become attached to the robotic vacuum and suggests there's a measure of public readiness to accept robots in the house — even flawed ones.

"They're more willing to work with a robot that does have issues because they really, really like it," said Beki Grinter, an associate professor at Georgia Tech's College of Computing. "It sort of begins to address more concerns: If we can design things that are somewhat emotionally engaging, it doesn't have to be as reliable."

In 2003, Intel announced that it was working on a technology called "Vanderpool" that was aimed at providing hardware-level support for something called "virtualization." With that announcement, the decades-old concept of virtualization had officially arrived on the technology press radar. In spite of its long history in computing, however, as a new buzzword, "virtualization" at first smelled ominously similar to terms like "trusted computing" and "convergence." In other words, many folks had a vague notion of what virtualization was, and from what they could tell it sounded like a decent enough idea, but you got the impression that nobody outside of a few vendors and CIO types was really too excited.

TCPA stands for Trusted Computing Platform Alliance. For the technology we will speak from TCP (The trusted computing platform). This plans that every computer will have a TPM (Trusted Platform Module), also known as Fritz-Chip, built-in. At later development stages, these functions will be directly included into CPUs, graphiccards, harddisks, soundcards, bios and so on. This will secure that the computer is in a TCPA-conform state and that he checks that it's always in this state. This means: On the first level comes the hardware, on the second comes TCPA and then comes the user. The complete communication works with a 2048 bit strong encryption, so it's also secure enough to make it impossible to decrypt this in realtime for a longer time. This secures that the TCPA can prevent any unwanted software and hardware. The long term result will be that it will be impossible to use hardware and software that's not approved by the TCPA.

Boston, MA—December 15, 2006—The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today launched BadVista.org, a campaign with a twofold mission of exposing the harms inflicted on computer users by the new Microsoft Windows Vista and promoting free software alternatives that respect users' security and privacy rights.

“Vista is an upsell masquerading as an upgrade. It is an overall regression when you look at the most important aspect of owning and using a computer: your control over what it does. Obviously MS Windows is already proprietary and very restrictive, and well worth rejecting. But the new 'features' in Vista are a Trojan Horse to smuggle in even more restrictions. We'll be focusing attention on detailing how they work, how to resist them, and why people should care”, said FSF program administrator John Sullivan.

The campaign will organize supporters into effective and unusual actions drawing attention to this daylight theft of computer users' rights, aggregate news stories cutting through the Vista marketing propaganda, and provide a user-friendly gateway to the adoption of free software operating systems like gNewSense (http://www.gnewsense.org).

Among other harms, BadVista.org will focus on the danger posed by Treacherous Computing in Vista. Commonly called Trusted Computing in the industry, it is an attempt to turn computers from machines controlled by their user into machines that monitor their user and refuse to operate in ways that manufacturers don't authorize.

Windows Vista è per alcuni il primo step al Trusted Computing, quello che alcuni potrebbero chiamare Palladium. Tolto il fatto che fino alla versione Release Candidate 1 di Windows Vista non si registrano quei problemi apocalittici avanzati da alcuni individui alla ricerca esasperata del complotto, qualche problema si può comunque registrare - attualmente - su quella che è la possibilità di masterizzare CD e DVD o emularli.

Aziende come Roxio, Alcohol e Ahead Software (produttore di Nero) lanciano un grido d'allarme: "i nostri software non lavorano correttamente con Windows Vista".

Secondo Alcohol Soft, sviluppatore di Alcohol 52% e 120%, Microsoft ha bloccato questa possibilità per assicurare la compatibilità in questa fase di test:

"Attualmente hanno inserito un blocco sui drive, per non permettere che siano caricati drive virtuali. Non ottenere un feedback dagli utenti per quanto riguarda questa caratteristica potrebbe complicare le cose. Stiamo lavorando con loro per assicurarci che non ci saranno problemi di incompatibilità".

Al momento, “Alcohol 120% non lavora su Windows Vista Beta, sebbene speriamo che la versione RC1 e le successive ne introducano il supporto", afferma Alcohol Soft.

Roxio e Nero non possono definire a che punto sia la compatibilità dei loro software, anche se la prima afferma che "EMC Version 9 è compatibile con Vista, ma dato che è un OS ancora in sviluppo, non è possibile assicurare la piena compatibilità fino al rilascio finale."

Nero si cela dietro un "stiamo lavorandoci sopra".

In attesa di sviluppi, gli utenti Windows Vista RC1 affermano che programmi come Deep Burner (shareware) e ImgBurn (donation-ware) lavorano correttamente.

1. What is TC - this `trusted computing' business?

The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) is an alliance of Microsoft, Intel, IBM, HP and AMD which promotes a standard for a `more secure' PC. Their definition of `security' is controversial; machines built according to their specification will be more trustworthy from the point of view of software vendors and the content industry, but will be less trustworthy from the point of view of their owners. In effect, the TCG specification will transfer the ultimate control of your PC from you to whoever wrote the software it happens to be running. (Yes, even more so than at present.)

2. What does TC do, in ordinary English?

TC provides a computing platform on which you can't tamper with the application software, and where these applications can communicate securely with their authors and with each other. The original motivation was digital rights management (DRM): Disney will be able to sell you DVDs that will decrypt and run on a TC platform, but which you won't be able to copy. The music industry will be able to sell you music downloads that you won't be able to swap. They will be able to sell you CDs that you'll only be able to play three times, or only on your birthday. All sorts of new marketing possibilities will open up.

About the Trusted Computing Group

The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) is a not-for-profit organization formed to develop, define, and promote open standards for hardware-enabled trusted computing and security technologies, including hardware building blocks and software interfaces, across multiple platforms, peripherals, and devices. TCG specifications will enable more secure computing environments without compromising functional integrity, privacy, or individual rights. The primary goal is to help users protect their information assets (data, passwords, keys, etc.) from compromise due to external software attack and physical theft.

TCG has adopted the specifications of TCPA and will both enhance these specifications and extend the specifications across multiple platforms such as servers, PDA's, and digital phones. In addition, TCG will create TCG software interface specifications to enable broad industry adoption.

The TCG project is known by a number of names. `Trusted computing' was the original one, and is still used by IBM, while Microsoft calls it `trustworthy computing' and the Free Software Foundation calls it `treacherous computing'. Hereafter I'll just call it TC, which you can pronounce according to taste. Other names you may see include TCPA (TCG's name before it incorporated), Palladium (the old Microsoft name for the version due to ship in 2004) and NGSCB (the new Microsoft name). Intel has just started calling it `safer computing'. Many observers believe that this confusion is deliberate - the promoters want to deflect attention from what TC actually does.

The point of Trusted Computing is to make it hard ... to open a document in a player other than the one that wrote it in the first place, unless the application vendor authorizes it. It's like a blender that will only chop the food that Cuisinart says you're allowed to chop. It's like a car that will only take the brand of gas that Ford will let you fill it with. It's like a web-site that you can only load in the browser that the author intended it to be seen in.

What this means is that "open formats" is no longer meaningful. An application can write documents in "open formats" but use Trusted Computing to prevent competing applications from reading them. Apple may never implement this in their own apps ... but Trusted Computing in the kernel is like a rifle on the mantelpiece: if it's present in act one, it'll go off by act three.
