Writing to learn argument and persuasion: A 'Trojan Horse' for promoting the adoption of 'Writing Across the Curriculum' (WAC) principles

In response to feedback from employers that was critical of business graduates’ writing capability, the article presents the results of a process of continuous innovation that aimed to develop business students' skills in formal writing, especially written persuasive argument. The learning environment created to achieve this task was informed by a selection of the principles and practices of a Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) programme implemented in New Zealand (Emerson, 1999, 2002, 2004).

The techniques were deployed within one specific course - organisational behaviour - in a class where students had little affection for formal writing tasks.

An orchestrated sequence of interventions included the adoption of five-paragraph essay writing, Halswell’s Minimal Marking (1983), peer critiques, and McAlpine’s Global English (1997) as a style guide.

Sudanese warning on peacekeepers

Sudan has again warned it cannot guarantee the safety of UN and African Union peacekeepers in Darfur if its president is indicted for war crimes.

A presidential adviser said that if the International Criminal Court indicted Omar al-Bashir, Sudan could not be held responsible for the troops' well-being.

Earlier this month, the ICC prosecutor asked judges in The Hague to issue an arrest warrant for President Bashir.

Seven UN peacekeepers were killed in an ambush in northern Darfur the week before the prosecutor's request.

The UN and African Union operate a hybrid mission in Darfur

Mr Malual suggested Unamid could become a kind of Trojan Horse, bringing the threat of arrest into Sudan's own sovereign territory.

He said it meant that the government could not be held responsible for the security and well-being of the peacekeepers and other foreign nationals in Darfur.

clipper's remarks: Two year ago when Maleki came to Harvard, Sadegh Kharrazi, a close friend and collaborator of his, told Shargh newspaper in Tehran (May 28, 2006): "There is actually an Iranian lobby in US which illustrates itself occasionally…. [this lobby] should remain non-governmental, but the government could support it, promote it and rely on it". Maleki's goal has been to turn this "occasional" lobby to a full time and large scale machine of influence and misinformation.

It is now apparent that the policy of United States on Iran over the past has been packed with confusion and shortsightedness. It is certainly not a mere security oversight to allow so many former officials enter the United States. Almost certainly, the United States’ goal is to create a back door channel to the mullahs in Iran, a de facto Iranian embassy. Nevertheless, this “embassy” is acting more like a Trojan horse than an ambassadorial channel.

These Mullahs' diplomats are recycled as scholars in Harvard or other fine American institutes. Senior among them is Abbas Maleki. ¹

A former revolutionary guard, a high ranking Iranian diplomat, and now a senior fellow at Harvard, "Professor" Maleki, is a prominent figure of the Mullahs lobby in the US.

In a series of articles and speeches in Tehran, Maleki has recently elaborated on "how to combat the US". He argues that the best means of countering the US pressure on Iran with respect to the nuclear issue is the use of "soft diplomacy", which according to him is to mount a large scale PR campaign. Creationism and intelligent design are a strictly philosophical theory. Non-Science. Evolution may or may not be as complete in our journey of discovery, since many things are not found yet, but to pretend this is about intelligent design as a science would be going back, repeating history. Some of us are trying to move into the 21st century and beyond, not into the middle ages or 18th century. If they plan creationism and intelligent design as a serious science to be the centerpiece of USA's science, we will loose the competition with the rest of the world. Do they,the creationists, ever consider the consequences for real science, or are they just so in love with godliness, that they cannot be here for real? Be real, evolution has given you a chance to move forward, not back into the caves.

Louisiana’s Latest Assault on Darwin

It comes as no surprise that the Louisiana State Legislature has overwhelmingly approved a bill that seeks to undercut the teaching of evolution in the public schools. The state, after all, has a sorry history as a hotbed of creationists’ efforts to inject religious views into science courses. All that stands in the way of this retrograde step is Gov. Bobby Jindal.

In the 1980s, Louisiana passed an infamous “Creationism Act” that prohibited the teaching of evolution unless it was accompanied by instruction in “creation science.” That effort to gain essentially equal time for creationism was slapped down by the United States Supreme Court as an unconstitutional endorsement of religion. State legislators, mimicking scattered efforts elsewhere, responded with a cagier, indirect approach.

If Mr. Jindal has the interests of students at heart, the sensible thing is to veto this Trojan horse legislation.

Take the new single from Labrador’s indie golden boys the Radio Dept for example.

It’s another step in the direction of a sound which is resoundingly dark and sombre, far removed from the gorgeous and spacious dream-pop of their debut disc Lesser Matters. While their sophomore record, Pet Grief, hinted at something darker with its raised glasses to detachment and disappointment, 'Freddie And The Trojan Horse' sees the Radio Dept. deep in a swell of bitterness and resentment. From the stuttered machine-gun beat to Johan Duncanson’s seething indictment of the Swedish government, 'Freddie And The Trojan Horse' is cold, harsh and one of the most exhilarating things I’ve heard all year. Trojan adware hiding in MP3s

Security vendor McAfee has reported a huge spike in fake MP3 files spreading on peer-to-peer networks. Although the files have names that make them look like audio recordings, they're really Trojan horse programs that try to install a shoddy media player and adware on your computer, said Craig Schmugar, a researcher with McAfee.

"Once you run it, there is no content. You're taken to this site to install this player which you don't really need," he said.

Fake file names include: preview-t-3545425-changing times earth wind .mp3 and t-3545425-just got lucky.mp3. Schmugar listed more filenames, as well as details on the adware, in a Tuesday blog posting.

Users are first asked to OK an end-user license agreement before the Trojan installs two programs, Mirar and NetNucleus, on their Windows PCs. People using Mac computers do not presently have to worry about the fake music files.

Lots of users have already realized, over the past years, how skillful and dangerous a hacker can prove to be. It seems that almost anything you do on the web can infect your personal computer. Yesterday, security

vendor McAfee has reported that a large number of fake MP3 files are spread on peer-to-peer networks. The announcement came to help users realize that they can get their PCs infected by just downloading a simple MP3 file.

After downloading the media file, which can be of either MP3 or MPG form, when users try to play it, they will be prompted to download a file dubbed "PLAY_MP3.exe". Victims should realize that the downloaded "music" or "video" file is actually fake and that no media file would be rendered.

The cynical depths to which this postmodern presidency has descended has long ceased to shock or surprise me, but the extent to which pure propaganda has been it's first, second and third string option, and how well that has worked should probably trouble us a lot more than it does in our current depths of accommodation to the increasing awfulness of our current circumstances.

Beginning with the buildup to the Iraq War, the Bush administration created this "media Trojan horse" to counter any and all criticism. At times, they manipulated the networks' own military experts, spoon-feeding them talking points on everything from Iraq to Rumsfeld's handling of the war to Guantanamo. Yesterday I posted about how Barack Obama's record does not match his campaign rhetoric, or the misperceptions of far too many of his followers. Today I'm going to explain how we can hold his feet to the proverbial fire, should he win the Democratic nomination and go on to become president.

While researching a story on the Democratic Leadership Council for the internet magazine Black Commentator in April and May of 2003, I ran across the DLC's “100 to Watch” list for 2003, in which Barack Obama was prominently featured as one of the DLC's favorite “rising stars”. This was ominous news because the DLC was and still is the right wing's Trojan Horse inside the Democratic party.

The iPhone's First Virus?

First sightings of malicious iPhone package

Reports started appearing on Saturday regarding the existence of malicious packages for the Apple iPhone. A package called "iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep", which was described as “An important system update. Install this before updating to the new 1.1.3 firmware.” was reportedly causing problems for iPhone users once uninstalled.

This is technically the first Trojan horse seen for the iPhone, however it does appear to be more of a prank than an actual threat. The impact of uninstalling the "Trojan" would appear to be an unintended side effect. The risk to users is minimal as they would have to choose to install the bogus package and the site which was hosting it has now been taken offline. Nevertheless, iPhone users should exercise caution regarding the packages they choose to install on their phones.
