(For the record, the family persimmon-ripening method: Place persimmon stem-side down on the kitchen counter, not in direct sun. Leave it there. Pick up once or twice a day to check whether it's getting soft yet. *shrug* It's always worked for us - we've never needed any of the tricks people mention in this post's comments.)

Clip Source: www.boingboing.net

When we moved into our house four or five years ago, I tasted one of the persimmons growing on the tree in our yard. It was a nice orange color, so I assumed it was ripe and ready to eat. I peeled off the skin and took a bite. It was awful, like sticking a spoonful of alum in my mouth. I threw the accursed fruit in the trash.

The next year I read that persimmons tasted better if you soaked them in brine first. I tried it. It was like eating a salty styptic pencil.

The year after that, someone told me to wait until the fruits were mushy. I waited. The few that made it to the mushy stage without being violated by squirrels were delicious, and had a custard-like texture.

This year, I read an article in the Oct/Nov 2008 issue of Mother Earth News, written by Winifred Bird, titled "Finding the Good Life in Japan." Bird is living the self-sufficient good life in rural Japan with her husband. In the article she explains how to dry persimmons the Japanese way.

Tags: fruit, persimmons, produce, boingboing, cooking, baking, tips

<clipSource>http://www.boingboing.net/2008/10/08/how-i-learned-to-lov.html</clipSource>

ACORN the GOP's October Surprise?

clipped by: thinkingblue
clipper's remarks: But it's just another AYERS-ING attempt by the right-wing. I sure hope this Rovian tactic fails. Flopping so hard that a lead balloon will seem flimsy. Driving even more democrats, thinking republicans and independents to the polls to vote for Obama. Just remember, if so many groups' main objective really were to strengthen democracy, America would have gotten rid of the electoral college by now.
Interesting opinion! ... I feel very strongly that everyone should always vote, but should we? Is not voting at all, better than voting for the lesser of two evils?

Clip Source: www.latimes.com

Don't vote. People will try to guilt you into it, but stay strong and resist. I'm talking to all of you who don't feel strongly about either presidential candidate

Voting is not an act of charity.

It's an entirely selfish act of expressing your opinion and asking for policies you want. A high voter turnout doesn't make our democracy work better.

nonparticipation is a legitimate expression of feelings about our political system

You'll be saying that none of the contenders convinced you

not voting is the safest way to assure your right to complain. Sen. Biden had a command of the details and historical facts, too many of them in the first half of the debate, but, if his objective was to reflect the Bush years into a McCain presidency, he was successful. Gov. Palin alleviated fears and anxieties over her appearing to be an air head with a solid rehearsed bag of tricks, like avoiding the questions, reverting to taxes, and attack, attack, attack. She stood toe to toe with Joe, and her base will praise her for it till the cows come home and long after.

<clipSource>http://www.watchblog.com/thirdparty/archives/006227.html</clipSource>

Game Neverland Download

clipped by: gameyou888

Clip Source: www.shinhwa.com.cn

His talents as 'spin-meister' have served him well as a political consultant for Reagan and George H W Bush. His close association with the undeniably despicable Karl Rove makes him even more reptilian.

Lee Atwater had a hand in designing the current seamy campaign for John McCain.

McCain has basically sold his soul to the devil to win this, most people agree, his last chance at higher office.

Atwater's sulfurous, rumor-mongering campaign stylle is testiment to how low someone will go to win an election.

It is interesting to note how Atqater, in 2000, tore McCain apart in his campaign against G W Bush and now he is attacking Obama in favor of McCain. These guys are all willing to prostitute themselves for power and money without any regard to ethics.

John McCain must be disgusted with himself for some of the choices he has made in his struggle to become president.

Today, he is a very different man than he was just one yea

Clip Source: www.newser.com

                             –
Before Karl Rove, Maureen Dowd reminds us, it was Lee Atwater who masterminded the Republican smear campaign, and his demolition of Michael Dukakis was his greatest, dirtiest success. Atwater painted the 1988 candidate as a weak Harvard-educated elitist with a weird last name, a man who supported "the Scary Black Man" and was not on "the American side." Watching John McCain's ugly campaign, the New York Times columnist asks simply, "Sound familiar?"

McCain's campaign has been disarmingly blunt about its need to take voters' focus off the economy if their man is to have any chance of winning. But while Dowd expected Atwater-like tactics from some Republicans—Sarah Palin is an especially eager "Mean Girl"—it's wrenching to watch the once respectable John McCain sink to such attacks. If he loses, "he will have contributed to his own downfall by failing to live up to his personal standard of honor."

Read the article to learn more.

Sam Maverick’s grandson, Fontaine Maury Maverick, was a two-term congressman and a mayor of San Antonio who lost his mayoral re-election bid when conservatives labeled him a Communist. He served in the Roosevelt administration on the Smaller War Plants Corporation and is best known for another coinage. He came up with the term “gobbledygook” in frustration at the convoluted language of bureaucrats
Fontaine Maury Maverick lost his bid for re-election in 1938. Notice how the Liepublicans called him a "communist." Notice how their dirty lying tricks haven't changed: Obama - terrorist, socialist, Marxist, black nationalist, and on and on ad naseum.

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

to those who know the history of the word, applying it to Mr. McCain is a bit of a stretch — and to one Texas family in particular it is even a bit offensive

“I’m just enraged that McCain calls himself a maverick,” said Terrellita Maverick, 82, a San Antonio native who proudly carries the name of a family that has been known for its progressive politics since the 1600s, when an early ancestor in Boston got into trouble with the law over his agitation for the rights of indentured servants

In 2006, voters in Virginia reportedly received fake voicemail messages from the state elections commission claiming that the voters were registered in another state and could be criminally charged if they cast their vote in Virginia.

Clip Source: abcnews.go.com

Election officials and watchdog groups are bracing for the wave of sneaky or suspicious phone calls, leaflets and emails that typically hit battleground states in the final 30 days of the presidential campaign.

Young voters at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Penn. have already been targeted, with students reporting that flyers have been posted around campus warning that undercover police will be at the polls on Election Day looking to make arrests.

Political experts say the Drexel flyer is a classic example of voter suppression – a practice that involves scaring, angering, or confusing voters so that they stay at home on Election Day.
